What is the meaning of Cacti in FS?

I'm a new figure skating fan,,,,and I saw a lot of people talking about the word cacti, I just know that's a plant,, but what's the meaning here? please tell me thanks

Is that what it means? I thought it referred to skaters who have poor choreo/handwork and just glide around with their arms out like a cactus.

Cacti are our beloved men figure skaters who can give us beautiful skates, or not so beautiful skates, but we love them anyway, even if it hurts.

And please do join the competition threads, where we do prepare for cacti with posts, photos and GIFs. That can sometimes help with the pain.

I wouldn't say that it necessarily refers to men only. I, for instance, have an ultimate cacti Swedish pair that I love dearly
But I agree that the cacti garden in Men category is overwhelming these days thanks to the mandatory quad hunt

it hurts to love them but you can't help it... reminds me ofa cat we owned, that could not stay away from our cactus plans and always, always got pricked.

AsI understand it (by reading old GS posts), the term derives from a Russian folk saying about mice chewing on a cactus. It sticks them painfully in the mouth, but the next day they go right back to chewing on it anyway.

Just like when your favorite skater lets you down time after time, but you can't help cheering hopefully for him the next time anyway.

Just to confirm what others have said, a "cactus" is somebody that we love, even though it hurts. Think of it literally - if you love somebody, you want to hug them. But if you try to hug a cactus, it's spines will hurt you.

For those who are unsure of the origins on GS, it was @cathlen that started us using the term "cacti" in this way.

And I am nearly sure that the first skater that she referred to as being a cactus was Michal Březina (CZE).

Since then, it has come to refer to Men's skaters in general because, let's face it, most of them are cacti!

i popularized i think i invented other stupid things i go very proud of but to my regret not this one

I believe that would be "airplane arms," made famous by Johnny Weir.

By the way the real "arms up cactus" (the giant Saguaro cactus of southwest United States and Mexico) has been in the news this summer because temperatures in Arizona have now risen to the point where these desert plants can't tolerate the heat and are diving out.

And they tend to be skaters people love, the most cactusy cactii do have a lot of fans in spite of the spines
