2025 John Nicks Pairs Challenge Senior SP

Thanks for posting my videos! Had a great time today. So many skaters and coach sightings.

Coach sightings included Jenni and Todd, Alexa K, Meagan Duhamel, Nina Mozer and Fedor Klimov, Josee C and others. It was especially nice to see Todd up and about. He still looks a bit thin but I saw him and Jenni walking outside afterwards and they were holding hands.

I won't be attending tomorrow so I hope others will post. I saw the Japanese lady recording on her tablet today.

who is Josée C coaching or do you mean Josée P ? (the first is Fiona Bombardier's mom and I doubt a pairs coach, the latter is Deanna and Max's coach)

I have no time tonight to watch all the teams.

I watched one team and as you would have guessed, Max and Deanna.

People complaining about the scores : I don't know. Max and Deanna have scored 77 points before. So 70 with missing a jump which is worth only 4.2 points doesn't seem like the end of the world. How many teams do score level 4s and positive GOE on everything else ?

The program is well built I don't like the throw backflip. To me, it brings nothing but worries :) I mean, now that's been done in competition and they can be seen as the first team ever to perform it, they can get rid of it, my opinion... :) Of course, it could be integrated a bit better but I just don't like it... the landing wasn't elegant either.

I have to say that the element for me that was best improved was the loop throw. Very good landing here and that's an element on which points have been lost in the past with lower GOE.

So yeah, I am not worried about the triple toe. Not worried about the score. Not liking the throw back flip :) and I think the program is going for them.

What a great debut for the Armenian pair! The highest tech score of the night. A great shot at the podium tomorrow.

I'm surprised how good they look after being sidelined with injury and not competing for more than 2 years now.
That split jump entry to the death spiral is pretty cool. Definitely something you haven't seen before.

Despite the errors from some of the teams, overall I think this is a great start of the season for the pairs.

Same here. Their score was only 2 points below Nebelhorn last year. And besides the jump they looked very good. The music works well for them.

Mikichka posted videos of most (if not all) the performances at this event last year and posted some videos of this year's SP, so I assume she will be here for the Free too.

Thank you both for your videos. While it's a shame we have to rely on fans for so much, it's nice to see that there are so many dedicated people out there who love this sport enough to film and upload entire competitions.

Per their bio, it's supposed to be Ghost.

I thought the number they did at Summer Sizzler was supposed to be their new SP, but maybe they decided to go back to another old one since they had a late start to training.
Their SP is listed as Caruso. The free was supposed to be Ghost.

How is the USFS going to look if C/H beat S/N here since they are sending S/N to the Olympic qualifier. All things being equal i'd send C/H just because they have more experience in big competitions.

Spencer was out for a long while due to shoulder surgery and recovery so in essence he is “coming back”. I think they did great yesterday.. let’s see how things play out.

So, the fp for senior pairs may be over now, or close to ending soon. Hope everyone came back to skate their best. I looked at all the short programs on YouTube. I did not look at the sp results yet. I wanted to figure out the placements based on my own viewing, which granted are guesses based on limited YT views, which means no slo-mo replays. My placement guesses will follow separately.

They're still in the first group, the beginning was delayed quite a bit.

lMO, Efimova/ Mitrofanov (Efi/Mit) and Stellato/Deschamps (Deanna/Max) had the best overall programs choreographically and re performance execution, obviously aside from Alisa doubling her sbs jump, and Deanna singling her sbs jump. Sigh... Oh, well. I think Efi/ Mit's program slightly edges Deanna/ Max, but both are standouts in this field.

McBeath/ Parkman (Katie/Daniil) skated the cleanest in the sp. And they have a very lovely sp. Despite moving a bit tentatively into their throw, and Katie landing with her upper body a tad forward, they were great with probably the best executed sbs jumps, and they did everything well. The main drawback for them is not being fully backed in the way they should be for their huge talent and promise. I hope they are given multiple competitive opportunities this season. For me, they even look good enough to be sent to Beijing, despite Daniil not being a citizen and thus ineligible for the Olympics even if they performed well enough to cement a third spot for the U.S. For me, where Katie/ Daniil could further improve is in exhibiting greater confidence and swagger, because they definitely have what it takes. They look more polished and well-tuned together, so why not let Daniil rev things up a bit and show his personality more, not wild the way he used to do, but controlled and dynamic. And let Katie respond and shine, too. That depends on finding the right vehicle to demonstrate their personalities more. ❤️

Arguably, Katie/ Daniil should be first, but they don't have the prestige standing and politics behind them. I would also place their program itself around 4th best. I think Shin/ Nagy's program is third best in terms of choreo, interest, and execution (aside from Audrey's fall on the throw; Sigh). Chan/ Howe's old program revamped is also mature and dynamic. Alas, C/H botched their sbs jumps, but jumping elements are not their strong suit.

The Russian-Armenian team had a strong debut, but I hope the judges' exercised some restraint in over-rewarding them. They moved okay but a bit labored, IMO. They are still young and need more time and experience, despite having great skill on the money pairs elements. Rakhmanin landed forward on the sbs jump, plus the tail end of their pairs sbs spin was out of sync. Also, Akapova used her mid-section to sit down into the death spiral. That's not a good look. Overall, their program is a bit boring, IMHO. They had the best throw jump execution, but while their twist is very good, it's not the best in this field.

Re twists: top ones are Deanna/ Max; and Katie/ Daniil. Efi/Mit also have an excellent 3-twist, along with Liu/Bedard; then Akapova/ Rakhmanin; Chan/Howe; Williams/ Lewer. Shin/ Nagy's 3-twist is right up there with the aforementioned second group. S/N's 3-twist has mightily improved, which means Audrey has gotten the hang of it, cuz Balazs is one of the best in the business re 3-twist execution. Fairly new Austrian team Izzo/ Maierhofer are looking very much improved. They skated clean, but still just have a 2-twist, and still need time to work on polishing and fine-tuning. But they are very promising, with sbs jumps their obvious strength!

Liu/ Bedard have wonderful sync on their spins for a new team, and they look confident together. Too bad about Chels still needing to figure out perfecting her landings on the sbs jumps and throws! Her issue is the length of her legs which means she needs greater height, better snap on the rotations and control in the air. Seeing Linzy of Fitzpatrick/ Bearinger still struggling on the sbs jumps and throw landings, plus Naomi of Williams/ Lewer falling on both jump elements, too, made me think U.S. fed should be instituting a sbs jump and throw landing clinic for their pairs girls. It's a tough element for many pairs internationally, but a lot of teams in the U.S. have so much else going for them, aside from being weaker on jumps and throws. Thus, a clinic seems sorely needed.

I'm not sure what happened to Flores/Wang with Liv stumbling on the sbs jump and falling on the throw, and then Luke having to set Liv down on the tail end of their lift. That's too bad, as they clearly have the skill and talent to perform much better. I hope they can pull up in the fp. [okay, they competed in juniors: Herrera/ Khobta look good together and skated well, but they are doing simpler elements at the moment, as Herrera gains pairs mastery and they continue learning together as a new team]. Schaller/Mayr look somewhat improved, but they had too much contact on their 3-twist dismount, along with errors on jump elements.

I'm not sure what the judges decided. I will look at placements and protocols for the sp. My take:

1. Efimova/ Mitrofanov
2. Stellato-D/ Deschamps
3. McBeath/ Parkman (judges may have Shin/ Nagy in 3rd and M/P in 4th 😐)
4. Shin/ Nagy
5. Akapova/ Rakhmanin -- hopefully judges did not overscore this team
6. Chan/ Howe
7. Liu/ Bedard
8 - 11 is a toss-up, because some experienced teams with good elements messed up, while Izzo/Maier with a 2-twist performed cleanly. My guess:
8. Izzo/ Maierhofer
9. Williams/ Lewer
10. Schaller/ Mayr
11. Fitzpatrick/ Bearinger
12. Flores/ Wang
13. Herrera/ Khobta

Okay, I checked and I see that Herrera/ Khobta must be in junior pairs. I'll strike them from my earlier list.

Wow, Shin/Nagy were not uplifted. Good, though. They need to skate their best to be rewarded. Audrey's throw triple must have been downgraded. And yes, Deanna/ Max have politically higher standing than Alisa/ Misha, so Deanna's single sbs jump was forgiven with high scores on their other elements, to land them in first, which should cement them an overall win. Deanna has shown she can land sbs jumps consistently, while Alisa hasn't, yet. I still like Alisa/ Misha's sp most of all. It's Chan/ Howe who were rewarded for their maturity and expertise, despite their botched sbs jumps. Good. I'm glad to see C/H appreciated. I was right in my McBeath/ Parkman; Akapova/ Rakh; Izzo/ Maier. And definitely, not far off in my Liu/ Bedard; Flores/Wang; and Schaller/ Mayr assessments. 🙂

I slightly over-rated how the judges might assess the sp performances of Williams/ Lewer and Fitzpatrick/ Bearinger.
