2025-26 British and Irish figure skating

Alice Smith has been given the final JGP spot. To be honest, I think her performance at Riga warrants it - but I am surprised because it leaves Leilah Patten without a JGP event this year. With only 3 spots available, it must have been difficult to select. Leila is our current junior champion, but hasn't competed yet this season (does anyone know why?). Emma Lyons' selection was a bit of a surprise to me, but it is the last season she is eligible. I think BIS also need to give Emma as much international experience as they can because they need either her or Genevieve Somerville to get the tech mins for Euros and, even though it is a junior event, the JGP will help with experience. We currently have no back up for Nina Povey in seniors.

Reading between the lines of this post that Leilah put up a month ago, it sounds like she has been injured:

Starting to getting my jumps back! Very tough journey, but things are looking up!

All the best to her!

I was wondering whether an injury was involved. :(

I just read in the Pirouette Newsletter (Pirouette is a German magazine) that Atl Ongay-Perez is now skating with Mia Lee Meyer from Oberstdorf, and that they are traning in Milan with Barbara Fusar Poli. So both Ashley and Atl have found new partners. I don't know for which country they are going to compete.

Probably for Germany since they are listed on the Bavarian squad for ice dance. I think Atl's mother is German? So citizenship might not be that much of an issue in the future if they skate for Germany.

Ah, so they train with Matthaei/Liebers, that's cool. I posted about them likely teaming up before on here, as they were already added to the Bavarian state team in June (so likely intending to compete for Germany, especially as Mia is also wearing a Team Germany shirt in the picture). As Atl's last international competition was in October of last year, it's possible we'll see them at some Junior Bs this season.

Either way, it's nice that both Ashlie and Atl have new partners now and get to continue their careers :)

(Off-topic for this thread, but Patrick Blackwell is apparently German-American? Interesting tidbit.)

As far as I know, she doesn't.
That's what I thought. I don't understand why they are going for an Olympic spot if she isn't going to be eligible. Ireland don't have a second ice dance team to send to the Olympics instead of Soucisse/Firus if they earn a spot.

Let's be brutally honest. On their form in recent years, the chances of them qualifying a slot for the Olympics are slim. They are going there to get another international competition under their belts, as preparation for their main focus - Europeans and Senior Worlds. (They already have the TES minimums for both). If they do suddenly find their best form again and qualify, it's a bonus.

This is why they needed Milla O'Brien to have found a partner by now, preferably one who had at least one Irish grandparent...

A real shame for Ed Appleby that he was injured over the summer, although I guess that explains why he pulled out of Robin Cousins Cup. though

I thought he skated well in the short considering that but as soon as Mark said about his disrupted preparation I suspected he would struggle in the Free. Fingers crossed he should get a spot in the Team event now, especially if the Kovalevs get promoted from their alternate slot.

A bit concerning that quite a few GB seniors have had injuries. I did notice that Phebe and James were still on the Cup of Nice entries (along with Lilah and Lewis) so hopefully that's a good sign.

The aforementioned Lilah & Lewis and Ana & Luke are competing at Nebelhorn this weekend.

It was a real shame that Ed was injured over the summer and didn't qualify for the Olympics at Beijing. However, I thought he did really well to keep on persisting in the free, despite lack of preparation, and recovering from injury - impressive determination.

I'm here in Oberstdorf for the Nebelhorn Trophy, and just walked past Ana and Luke on the way back from the rink. Lukas and Ken Fitterer are also competing here this week. Hope the British skaters do well and enjoy the event. I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements to Lilah and Lewis's programmes since the premier at the Bolero Cup three weeks ago.

Phebe and James performed in the Evening With Champions gala a couple weeks ago and debuted their rhythm dance there so hopefully that means they're doing ok!

Oh dear. I don't watch much skating until the senior Grand Prix starts... but I've just seen Lilah and Lewis's Nebelhorn skates.

My ice-dance-loving partner is really gonna struggle with this. He's Scottish and has a visceral dislike of Auld Lang Syne! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿:laugh4:🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Phebe and James started their season today at the Trophy Metropole and there is a free YouTube stream!

It's a bit potato quality, but still, it's free

Edit: they are at about the 2.19 mark
