Jason Brown

What is the longest career a singles skater has ever had, without a break and a comeback?
I don't know if they're the longest, but Vornov did 14 seasons and Brezina 15. Jason will have 13 at the end of this season.

I only counted senior seasons for all skaters. Vornov didn't compete much in 2010-11 because he was injured during his first GP. But I'm going to count it as "not a break" because he was training, started one GP, and did Nationals. Brezina didn't have anything that looked like even a whiff of a break (except for missing events that weren't held during COVID).

Added: Bychenko also had 14 senior seasons.

That is one of the best interviews with Jason that I've ever seen. It's a distillation of Jason's career from Jason's point of view and it's interesting. It's not new ground, but it's very personal. It's nice that they gave him an outlet to express all of that. What is the longest career a singles skater has ever had, without a break and a comeback? Yes, he didn't do GPs for two seasons, but he did Nats and/or he did World's, so there really was no break. But this interview touched on all of it, longevity, the quad quest, the struggle to find his place long term and how he succeeded at that. But he makes it clear in this and other interviews that he's focusing in making the Olympic team in '26 and the future remains to be seen beyond that.
I don't know if it's the longest career for a singles skater, but Valtter Virtanen is now on his 20th season as a senior skater.

I wondered if Bychenko was longer. Those last seasons for all 3 of those skaters were subpar, but we'll see how Jason fares. He's in good shape and he has skating qualities that none of those three skaters had. Voronov was amazingly strong toward the end. But Mike was really fading and Bychenko was having trouble just getting through a freeskate. I certainly don't want to see that happen to Jason. But I think by carving out his own path, he is less likely to fall into that pattern. 13 seasons is a LONG time in singles!

Another excellent podcast interview with Jason, where he pushes back on those who complain the sport is too subjective (that's what figure skating is, it's art), talks about handling criticism and points out that the sport structure can stifle innovation.

I will say that Jason has been a pleasure to listen to on these LGBTQ+ podcasts, they ask great questions, and I don't mean "who are you dating"

(Not a direct link but Jason's "button" is very prominent)

It's nice that he's talking about himself so fully but not really distracting from his priority, which is skating. This was a very good interview. I had heard that story about how his family told him that he had to choose one sport that he would focus on, as his school life became more demanding. We all knew that he chose skating, but that story of how he felt after losing the soccer game and after a not great skate at a competition, clarified how important skating was to him. I had never heard about that process before. It was interesting. Jason is one elite skater who was never pushed to be a great skater by his family. They just asked for commitment and they were there to support him. No backstage Moms or competitive Dads. Jason pushed himself, and of course, so did his coaches and choreographer, but it originated with Jason alone. He's the driver!

Jason’s merch shop is open with items for sale!

I am mildly disappointed that there is no skating references or anything that specifically says “Jason Brown”. I am happy however that there is a pink crewneck, so an order may be in my future.

And he models the clothes with panache ;)

The problem with the pink is that the lettering doesn't show up very well. Same problem with light blue (hoodie).

Jason Brown did another Q and A during his stay in Japan for Friends on Ice show.

He talks about his programs, costume, vlog, the goals for this season, etc.

On his SP Riverdance:
...my long part of this year is so personal, with such a personal story, that almost felt like the long was for me, and then I was able to, like, give back in the short, and the short was for you guys, and I'm just so overwhelmed and so grateful for all the support over the years that this short program is kind of like my gift to the audience and the fans and everyone that's been supporting me throughout my career as just like a thank you, and we're kind of celebrating it together, and we're in it together.

On his FS Say Something:
I've always struggled throughout my career to speak up and use my voice and advocate for myself, and I really wanted to… have a program that represented that and showed the growth that I was making, not only as a person and not only as a skater, but as a person on the ice as well.
And so I really wanted to… do something that was so personal, and tell a story about really speaking up and using your voice and finding your voice.
(I apologize if I didn't write everything down - he speaks pretty fast, lol)

I find it interesting that both of the top two US men talk about their 'voice' in relation to their free skate this year.

I also wonder how he manages to carry four suitcases at the same time on his own 😂

At first, I thought the Trialeti trophy was a back up for Jason, and that he would not do both the Denis Ten and the Trialeti.

I have changed my mind after seeing Jason’s IG story about traveling to Almaty. Toronto to Istanbul to Astana to Almaty:cry2: whereas there is a nonstop flight from Almaty to Tbilisi. Yes, I looked it up.;)

Jason‘s tour of the world thanks to skating continues.

Jason is probably the last remaining active skater who competed against Dennis and they trained together in the summer. And I doubt that he's ever been there. He's posted that he got to his room after about 30 hours of traveling. Exhaustion!

I hope this comp goes really well! He's got some serious competition, but he just needs to be clean for this one. And make the audience love him!

Jason is almost certainly one of the few remaining active skaters who competed against Denis, but Deniss V competed against him (Denis T), too.

I'm still sad about Denis Ten. 😢 What an exhausting trip for Jason, but he looked upbeat in the posts he sent. Hope he can get some rest before the competition starts.

Deniss V! The earliest results internationally that I could find on the ISU page was 2018, though he was probably around before that? But Denis Ten didn't compete after 2016 as far as I could tell. Deniss V is only 26, and was 15 in 2014 when Denis Ten won Bronze at the Olympics. So their paths probably didn't cross much before 2016, if at all. It's an interesting question that research could answer.

Jason has about 3 days to adjust to the time zone etc. and get ready for competition which begins on the 4th, I think. It's a challenge for sure!

Valtter Virtanen competed at the 2012 Nebelhorn Trophy against Denis Ten, as well as at the 2013 Ice Challenge, the 2014 Merano Cup, the 2015 NRW Trophy (I didn't check if there were others):

I looked up Denis Tens last worlds (2017), and found Dennis V, Valtter V, and MATTEO RIZZO!

Denis T and Deniss V both competed at 2016 and 2017 Worlds, so their paths crossed at least twice (but after 2016, as you say).

Anyway, back to Jason - yes, three days to adjust isn't great, but I have faith that he will be ace!

I agree about Jason. He seems to be very smart about diet and exercise and probably knows the best ways to combat jet leg and exhaustion. Best of luck to him!

It testifies to longevity these days that so many men are still in the mix. Valter doesn't do GPs, but Matteo certainly does. He and Jason were often neck and neck at GPs. I like Matteo's skating this year. He's upped his artistic and component game. He's always leaned that way, but his jumps would often go south. But he's a nice skater. So much will depend on how the judges view Jason's component skills and his non quad tech. The early comps were showing strong political bents, so we'll see where this goes. The Denis Ten comp is pretty stacked at the upper level. It will be an interesting season!

Jason is posting his sight-seeing experiences and going to the markets. I'm assuming that he's with his family at this point. He has no time after the comp for touring with them. They will all be off for Tibilisi. He also posted a clip of practice ice. He looks fine so far.
