The Japanese team had to compete to earn the second spot since they didn't qualify for the free at Worlds, they didn't have the second spot at the Olympics until they finished in the top 3.Off topic: I'm a bit confused as to how the Olympic spots are assigned. Like in pairs the Kovalev's didn't finish in the top 3 so don't get to go, but a Japanese team finished ahead of them - don't they have 3 spots already? Why would they finishing ahead push Cami and Pavel out?

The Japanese have 3 pairs spots for Worlds, but not for Olympics. Olympic spots awarded at Worlds are capped at number of their pairs (teams, skaters) that made the free skate. If Oly spots is less than Worlds spots, they can try here for another Oly spot.Off topic: I'm a bit confused as to how the Olympic spots are assigned.
