2025 Grand Prix de France Where Are You Watching?

Having lots of problems with Peacock. It keeps cutting off the Pairs SP and sending me to another program. Switching to VPN.

Odd. No issues with Peacock replay..... After the comp, will have to experiment with VPN to see which countries work. Proton has 120 countries

In the past few seasons, I have pretty much lost interest in the Senior GP Series. There are not enough participants, and not enough variety amongst them. It's largely the same skaters, from the same countries. I like to see different skaters, from different countries. And especially skaters from smaller Feds. That's why I much prefer watching the Junior GP Series, the regular Senior B's, the Challenger Series, and the Majors.

This morning, I watched about 15 minutes of yesterday's Pairs SP from the French round of the Senior GP Series, to see the partnership that I have adopted. And the quality of the coverage has really deteriorated since last season. For a start, although they had a decent commentator in Chris Howarth, you couldn't hear what he was saying his levels were so low compared to the ambient sound.

The directing left a lot to be desired, with arty-farty camera shot transitions and changing camera shot in the middle of elements, which both meant that you missed things. Also, during the Warm-Up, we didn't actually see much of the skaters practicing elements, because they were concentrating on showing shots of people in the audience.

But, the worst thing was the new graphics. Don't get me wrong, the new colour scheme did make the writing clearer. But, that didn't matter, because the writing was so small that you couldn't make out what it said!

Here are some snippets from the report I wrote for Camille and Pavel's Fan Fest:

  • "Oooh. New graphics. I wonder if they will tell us more than the old ones, or if it is just an unnecessary cosmetic makeover to go with the unnecessary new ISU logo."

  • "Chris is talking at the same time as the French and English rinkside announcers. And the result is that you can't make out what any of them are saying about the skaters! I wish commentators would only talk when the announcers are not talking."

  • "Wish they wouldn't do these arty-farty shots and transitions when the skaters are in their starting position. We want to see the start of the programme properly!"

  • "Another arty-farty camera shot transition in the middle of the Reverse Lasso Lift which meant we didn't see it properly."

  • "So was the Change Foot Combination Spin that followed, although it too had an arty-farty camera shot transition in the middle of it. For goodness sake, stay on the same camera for the whole element!"

  • "This new TES box is awful! It's a good job I'm not watching LIVE, because I was having to pause it after every element to go up close to the TV to check what the element was because the writing is positively tiny! Which really ruined the flow of the programme for me."

  • "I know I've only seen about 15 minutes of the coverage, but if that was anything to go by, the audience were definitely getting to see what is happening better than the TV viewers! What the TV viewers are being given is not good at all."

It is well known that strange camerawork and directing is a tradition of the French events. But, the rest of it is in the hands of the ISU. If this is representative of what the coverage of the rest of the Senior GP Series is going to be like, it will be even less of an incentive for me to watch any of it other than just my kids.

I just hope that the ISU make improvements to the coverage of their events before the Majors. Because it would really spoil the enjoyment of watching the most prestigious events in this sport if the coverage remains like this. If they don't, I could see me giving up on them too. And I really don't want to do that, because I love the variety of skaters that get to participate in them.

As soon as the Women's SP ended I clicked on the Peacock tile for Pairs SP. I got the usual "coverage will begin shortly" message for about 30 seconds and then Peacock redirected me to some program in the "channels" section. I tried about 6 times to stay on the Pairs SP tile but kept getting redirected. I went to my VPN and watched the ISU stream for about 10 minutes and then went back to Peacock and everything worked ok.

Peacock messed up the begining of the Ladies free quite a bit. I was about to activate a VPN and search for a country when it settled down. If this would have happened during a game of the ball that they broadcast, fans would have called for tar and feathers....

Except for a few blurbs where the screen froze for a few seconds I haven't had any problem with Peacock - other than they raised their prices right before the GP series started. :cry3:
