2025 Japanese Nationals - Sr. Free Dance

Is Koshiro the first skater since Daisuke Takahashi to medal in two disciplines at Japan Nationals? He now has national silver for singles in 2022 and ice dance in 2025.

And of course... our favorite tech caller Shin Amano (singles gold in 1994 and pairs gold in 1997).

Since it was still missing, I uploaded the Senior FD (@tsuyoboogie, I hope you weren't already working on this one ):

Warmup Group 1
1. Chisato Uramatsu / Atsuhiko Tamura
2. Ayano Sasaki / Yoshimitsu Ikeda
3. Rika Kihira / Shingo Nishiyama
4. Ikura Kushida / Koshiro Shimada
5. Utana Yoshida / Masaya Morita

I just noticed the video was sitting in my drive but still restricted 😅
I think I was waiting for it to fully process before I posted the link and just forgot while working on the Women FS videos

Thank you so much for sharing!
I really appreciate your help!
Sorry for the delay and inconvenience~

Just caught up courtesy of synesthesia, thank you so much!!! All in all it was a respectable showing from everyone, especially considering how new some of these partnerships are. I'm a bit surprised how close the top two are - although IkuKo are very impressive as a relatively new team, and they are well matched and well packaged, I think there is definite difference in skill level and quality between the two couples, though what do I know. IkuKo are very pleasing to the eye and will no doubt improve quickly. I'm sure the rivalry will make both couples work hard to excel. I felt that Masaya has matured a bit - he seemed more focused on making sure he was there for Utana, which is really sweet. Also very much enjoyed Ayano & Yoshimitsu. Hope they get some love from the Fed and can compete overseas next year. RikaShin and Chiiatsu are very promising for the next quad. Japanese ice dance really seems to be taking off!

I finally caught up too. That might have been one of the best if not the best ice dance competition at Japanese Nationals. Just the fact that you have 5 couples from 3 camps alone is pretty amazing.

You can really tell that UtaMasa is the most experienced among as a couple just from the quality of their turns. They seem to be struggling with tiny mistakes this year though, and maybe their stamina is a bit lacking. Cathy seems to want to push them towards the more fun and powerful type, which suites them and makes sense as they will likely not get the "wow" factor from international judge, but they are going to need more technical refinement and stamina.

UkuKo, they are such a perfect match. They are both very elegant and very good performers. They draw you in when they look at each other and smile. If they can get their tech minimum, they will definitely be well received by international judge.

RikaShin, it was amazing how much they were able to accomplish from 2.5 months of training. Shingo is definitly guiding and supporting Rika at the moment, and his experience really helped them with the mistake on the lift. It is so nice to see Rika back. She is an amazing skater. It was pretty sad to see her tear at the kiss and cry, but I am glad to see Shingo and their coach supporting her there.

I really hope that JSF sent all of these team to CS, so they can get more compeition experience, and minimum and points for their world rankings.

So happy so see all of those teams, they are so eager to work further and develop and all of them have a lot of potenial to grow, I hope federation will start to send all of them to intl competions, some B events and challengers. C'mon JSF, don't save on ice dance anymore!

I have to say, I am a bit uneasy about Rika and Shingo's future as a team. I thought the choice of music in the RD didn't work well (or rather, it worked for Shingo but just further emphasized that Rika is not currently comfortable performing that style) and the FD had the opposite problem (great music, largely generic choreography) but most of all I felt like afterwards the coach was so focused on reassuring Shingo to the point where no one was even looking at Rika for a while. I hope it was just one moment, but I do wonder if it was the wisest idea to make such a big deal of publicizing Rika's switch to dance so soon (press conference and all) when they're really only beginning to find their footing as a team. It seems like it's put a lot of unnecessary and unrealistic pressure on the two of them.

I was really impressed by Ikura and Koshiro, and I enjoyed Ayano Sasaki/Yoshimitsu Ikeda's programs a lot.

Replay Lounge is open! Would love to hear your thoughts!
