2025 Japanese Nationals - Women's FS

I am so sad for her.
Rinka was kept out of EVERY major team. She's alternate for the Olympics, Worlds, AND 4CC! She doesn't deserve this!

Rinka should consider moving to another federation if she can! A woman who has three triple Axels in her SP and FS combined, one in a triple combo and they still can't at least throw her a bone and give her Four Continents! 🥺

She can't 'move to another federation' without giving up her Japanese citizenship.

Seriously, I don’t understand how Rinka didn’t get the 4CC assignment. I love Yuna’s skating, but she only had one good competition all season and didn’t even place fourth at Nationals. Rinka is a two-time Grand Prix medalist, she qualified for the Grand Prix Final, her season’s best is among the best this season, and she is well ahead of Yuna Aoki in the world ranking. For me, both should be at 4CC, but if Japan was going to send Ami and Mone, then Rinka should have gotten the third spot. I just don’t understand. If Kaori decides to be kind, she might withdraw from Worlds—especially if she ends with an Olympic gold—and let Rinka compete in the second biggest competition of the season.

I'm frustrated that JSF gave Rinka Watanabe 64 in PCS with this amazing skate.
She was score in PCS 65 in GPF and 67 in skate america.
JSF do everything for Rinka to not make her in the Olympic team. What a shame !
Yes and this was the best she has skated this program although I would give her 66 for PCS

Quick summary:
Because it's Kaori over Mao i don't mind,but 76 PCS is a joke.
Still interesting competition with lot of fighting.Olympics spots as predicted.
Nothing gonna change.
Well done from Rinka and Yuna today especially.
Now we wait for the main event of the season.Cant wait to see Russian crying over 60 PCS for Adelia 😂
See you.
Is Kaori at nationals... I would have given her 74, this is not her best program for me but it's very hard and lots of emotions into it

I literally been thinking about this all day and I’m just irritated to no end. I thought it was the technical panel that butchered Watanabe’s score, but they were actually very generous to her and they were across the board. The 3T was UR but uncalled and the qs were actually URs as well. The 3S should have been invalidated as she clearly puts her foot down before going in. As has been already noted, it was her PCS score so it was the judges that put her on the chopping block. Compared to what she was getting internationally, she got what was just about her lowest PCS score of the season for her best skate of the season!

This is where my irritation kicks in. Watanabe would have been 4th in an ordinary year. Judges got a little too antsy about her breaking up the status quo and it was just so unnecessary. The selection criteria is very clear and can be used to provide justification when…unorthodox decisions must be made. Had Watanabe and Chiba been switched in the standings, for instance, choosing Chiba over her for the Olympics could have easily been justified by using their very own criteria. Yes, people would have gotten loud, but so what? We’re being loud anyway but now it’s because of slimy judging!!!

Just finished watching the Women's FS. What an emotional Nationals. I'm going to miss these ladies we've been seeing for 10+ years. I will especially miss Wakaba, and I couldn't hold the tears back when Mai skated. Thank you to the audience for the warm wishes for them all. Thx to the skaters for all the memories.

The time has passed, the emotions have evaporated... or, they have not  Anyway, I am catching up.

Here are my honest SUBJECTIVE AND PERSONAL play-to-play reactions:

Warmup Group 1

1. Haruna Iwasaki
Not impressed by the program. Impressed by her Biellmann split though. I love it when a skater has a perfectly straightened support leg  I wouldn't mind her coming back stronger and fighting for a better place in the mix next year because there certainly are more interesting things that she can do with that great body line of hers.
2. Arisa Kamoi
I wonder what her age is. It looks like she's right in the hands of Puberty The Evil Witch (and we know that this Witch becomes particularly nasty when she's been fought against and delayed). If so, then Arisa has a few erratic seasons ahead of her. It looks like she's an agile skater nevertheless. Maybe she can sneak through and fool that witch somehow? :scratch2:
3. Ikura Kushida
She looked tired tbh. I don't think I really - like, really - like her sad program either. I'm glad that she did it though. This experience is expanding her range and adding to her artistic growth. Maybe it does not pay off at the moment but later it will.
4. Rion Sumiyoshi
Aww that hurts 🫣
It's not just one unlucky competition. Apparently, her entire training and preparation strategy has been wrong. If she's staying for another quad cycle, she needs to re-think everything and change what's necessary. I can imagine that she may consider retirement instead, especially in the heat of the moment. I kind of hope that she'll stay though. It feels unfair to leave it all at this point when she has so much more to give.
5. Haruna Murakami
I like this Titanic program and how it blends with Haruna's personality. Would have liked it even more if Haruna wasn't late on music. Well, it's the end of her season and she has already reached her goals. Thanks for coming and showing off your gorgeous hairdo, Haruna! Btw it's not sarcasm! Such hair takes a lot of work. I appreciate it indeed(y)
6. Sumika Kanazawa
She leaves me unimpressed. Yes, seriously! It's just normal that a Japanese novice champion goes to JGP final and participates in senior Nats in her debut junior year. If it was less than that, we would fret and talk about crisis in Japanese female skating. So, she's performing well according to her age and rank. What to be impressed about? Of course, she's good. But is she special? This is something that she has to prove in the upcoming seasons. And I can't wait to see it!

Warmup group 2
7. Mei Okada
Talking about juniors that left me unimpressed, I wasn't impressed the least when I first saw Mei last year. Literary, I was impressed by every other Japanese junior but her. This year though... Wow!

:jaw:
She has grown both physically and as a performer. Not that she is interpreting every nuance of music - she is interpreting, like, every third nuance of music - but her interpretation is spot-on and this is a truly enjoyable watch. Now she looks like the next big thing for a season or so until a certain Witch will remember about her :slink: Anyway, I hope that Mei will get the most out of her teenage peak form and enjoy it to the fullest!
8. Kaoruko Wada
This program was certainly different from Haruna's: no personalization, no character, just a random mermaid telling the tale about the fate of Titanic. I liked this mermaid though. Puberty The B... Witch has been laughing on this young skater the entire season but as a result Kaoruko's body has grown into the adult proportion and looks really, really good. The impression created by her skating is completely different from a year ago and I like it so much better now. Looking forward to her further development indeed.
9. Rino Matsuike
Ready for a hands-free death spiral, huh? 😁 Rino looked a bit jump-cautious so her skating skills couldn't shine either - you need flow, you need real flow to make them shine - but she got through and looked relieved in the end. I felt relieved with her. It's the end of her season and it wasn't a bad season at all (y)
10. Yo Takagi
And here went another recent victim of Puberty The Witch... And again, I was pleasantly surprised at how good her body line looked after growing out of teenage chunkiness. I love her Chaupin program and it has never looked better on her  Apparently, Yo will need some more time to stabilize her jumps after the last growth spurt. But I have a sneaky feeling that it will be worth waiting!
11. Kei Yamada
I like this young lady's taste in music but the one who told her that she could interpret it is a liar  Anyway, she looked like an ultimate unicorn, different from everything and everyone. Not always in the best sense of word but still. I'm so glad that she managed to get on that Supported Athletes List. It will be exciting to watch what she will finally develop into.
12. Mai Mihara
Oh, my... 😥
Just a shadow of what Mai used to be in her days of glory and her dress somehow amplified that shadowy impression... But it was so good to see her stepping on the ice one last time for her home audience!

Allright, break. .

Not impressed by the program. Impressed by her Ina Bauer split though. Allright, break. Face resurface needed before warmup group 3.
1. Haruna Murakami is cute. And happy. And real. And oh that smile.
2. The crowd loves Mai no matter what and so do I. She stands 10 feet tall after coming back from juvenile arthritis. She went out there to close out her am. skating life. And she rose up and nailed it. Much of that also goes for Wakaba and others. And, in an oblique way, for Rika also. An ending and new beginings. So was Mai just a shadow? Not to me. This week, she was a skyrocket that arced over and was on its way back to earth and exploaded in a blaze of glory...Chris who is a shadow of his former self who also knew when to get out at the right time. Bless you, Mai. Thanks for the memories.

Even worse than that - not even 4CCs??! Like heck, they pissed all over her. Girl made it to GPF for frick sake.

Oh, she's worth it 😍
Regardless of how subjective or personal some of us may get, she's worth it :)
I am a bit of an odd duck here. Once, at US Nats Omaha, I got on a free shuttle to the restaurant district, and the driver said, "You arent the typical figure skating fan, are you?" And he was right and still is. I shoot long range rifle competition with antique black powder rifles. I ride fast motorcycles, camp out, hike the high country, and love aircraft pylon racing...before they took it away from us. But I love to watch figure skating...artistic figure skating....artistic figure skating from a loveable people. I love to watch Mai. And many others. Frankly, I really dont care that I will be missing the US nats, except for Jason Brown. Most of the people I cared about are now gone, and some I have distain for. But this is not the place to be negative. I feel honored that I could watch the Korean Chairman's cup and especially this competition. These people are special for me. I love the SHOW! I love the people. And I love all the Japanese and Korean fans I have met over the years.....there are many US fans that say many cruel things about US and other skaters....those are not my people.

Wish I would have bought stock in tissue companies before this nationals.... tears around the world.

Replay Lounge is open! Would love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for invitation to the lounge but I'll drop the second part of my impressions here, I feel that they are somehow... specific

Warmup group 3
13. Saki Miyake
Nah, I'm not joining Saki Miyake hype yet 😅 I want to see her individuality first. Right now, I see a girl who emulates Kaori Sakamoto. Not a bad role model but I want to see the real Saki before I build an opinion.
14. Mako Yamashita
No problem with artistic individuality here! Mako may skate to the same music as Kaori but she brings an entirely different personality to it. Enjoyable performance, memorable skater. I wouldn't mind seeing her skating internationally as well.
15. Mana Kawabe
I really liked this program. This is probably the first Mana's program that I truly love and 3A didn't ruin the impression at all. Fingers crossed that she has her 3A done to return to international skating with more interesting programs, because without that axel... I mean, look at Mako!
16. Maria Egawa
Or, look at Maria, another beautiful skater who never skated internationally. At least she will now see other countries as a pro skater on a cruise ship. She already knew she was retiring and her emotions were there... I honestly wanted to cry and feel like missing her skating but unfortunately she skated to Nessun Dorma. Have a nice cruise, Maria!
17. Wakaba Higuchi
Wakaba has never been on top of my imaginary casting list but as Wonderwoman... I'd cast her for this role any time  ... and I will miss her skating 😭
18. Yuna Aoki
This is the girl which I'd cast any time for any role. She probably can relate to a character from La La Land because she is now a busy show skater herself. And guess what? Her competitive career takes off to new heights at the same time. Make the right decisions, young lady! Because I want you... everywhere I guess

Warmup group 4
19. Rinka Watanabe
That feeling when you jump two 3As and still fall out of top six... I hope Mao Asada gave her a hug. I didn't like the program though. It was somehow chaotic and it's a bit unclear how it was meant to impress components wise. Allright, Rinka, keep calm! Keep improving your jumps, your components, everything! Ye young people always want too much too soon. It doesn't work like that.
20. Mayuko Oka
I wonder if Puberty The Witch has already touched Mayuko with her fingertips... Or, it could be just bone growth. Those growth things are so complex at times :( Anyway, it was a good effort and a beautiful program. Regardless of how long Mayuko will be able to use her teenage superpowers, this day will be a good one to remember.
21. Mone Chiba
I like Mone's long program better than her short and I am generally satisfied with the direction that her development has taken. However, Mone's nervousness is infectious and it tends to ruin my enjoyment. I guess it doesn't really matter as long as she gets through like she did. But it's me. The PCS judges may have different opinions. They have "confidence" written in their Bible.
22. Ami Nakai
This youngster flies on the wings of the last stretch of her teenage jumps and Witch P can but curse helplessly because Ami doesn't care. Yup, since I didn't find Ami's long program particularly exciting, I started to muse about Witch P's future plans, for example...
23. Mao Shimada
...for example, what is Puberty the Witch doing to this young princess? Apparently, the curse is in the action already. Mao is struggling with her big jumps. She is a fighter and it's good but... I hope that this is not a desperate attempt to curb puberty by means of radical dieting and excess training. Guys, it's not your plan for 2030, right? Right?
24. Kaori Sakamoto
What a relief! No need to discuss puberty any longer ☺️
I don't really want to discuss anything else either, just sit and watch. Eventually I'm falling in love with this program. It's a strong Olympic program choice. What's the point of talking? Now, there is one final straight in front of Kaori: to the Games. Let's see how good it will get and... and then talk afterwards ;)
