2026 Europeans: General Info and Pregame Chat

The entire Italian (sports) press is speculating about the reasons why C/M are not flying to England. Some reports regret the decision, while others refer to the announced “special event” with which the pair wants to surprise everyone at the Olympic Games... (oh, will they skate under hypnosis, have “special arrangements” been made with the judges that they can rely on?!)

Looking back... In their total fixation on Olympic gold, Savchenko/Massot already pursued this strategy back then, skipping the European Championships in the run-up to the Games so as not to jeopardize their big goal in Pyeongchang at the last moment and not to waste valuable time traveling around. Apart from the honor of bringing Olympic victory to their country at home, C/M are now certainly under similar pressure to succeed, as time is running out for them too. Of course, every effort is now being made...

But there is also a lot going on with the Germans. They are pursuing a contrasting strategy, so to speak, with the entire team presenting themselves in a longer public training session in front of a large contingent of press representatives and television crews. H/V seemed in high spirits. Minerva commented that Sheffield was a final stage without experiments, in order to test stability without overexerting themselves (such an understatement could help to ease the pressure of high expectations).

Only one pair out free? It sounds more brutal to be only one who does not make it than if there were more. I don't know why, because it is disappoiment to everybody who does not make it, if there were 16 or 17, but I think the possibility to make it to free is better when not so much pairs and then it is just you who do not make it.

With Akopova/Rakhmanin withdrawing due to visa issues, all the teams will make the free now since it's down to 16 teams. It would be brutal for the one team though, I always feel bad for the skaters who end up being the only ones to not make the cut. Especially if it's by less than a point.

Jennifer Janse van Rensburg and Benjamin Steffan have withdrawn from the ice dance competition due to health reasons. Charise Matthaei and Max Liebers will replace them.

Ok. I missed that wd.

Karina AKOPOVA / Nikita RAKHMANIN and Semen DANILIANTS WD due to visa issues.

I'm sorry that our administrators have been so rubbish.

I would bet that the problem is that they were travelling on Russian passports. Because Stefania Yakovleva's coach had the same problem for the Robin Cousins Cup in August. That's why her Mum was sitting with her when she was getting her results back then. Stefania and her Mum were travelling on Cypriot passports, so they didn't have any bother.

And on that note, I wonder if we will see Maria sitting with her daughter again this week... 🤔

I don't think they are travelling on Russian passports as they have been in Yerevan for the past few days in order to sort out the visa situation.

Unfortunately, British visas have an average processing time of 6 weeks. If they didn't apply until December, the time frame is simply too short to be sure about getting a visa before the start of the competition. There's an option to expedite the process but that is, of course, more expensive - £500 for processing within 5 days, £1000 for processing within 1 day.

The company they went through, VFS Global, is apparently not great either, sadly. I've seen quite a few comments on other platforms about how they lost necessary documents, how employees were not knowledgeable about the visa rules of some countries and how they actually caused big delays in visa processing for some customers. :/

My goodness! What a mess!

I know the answer (not enough staff), but why does bureaucracy always have to be so slow?! :drama:

Thank goodness any countries I have been to have not required visas. And hopefully having a British and an Irish (EU) passport will prevent me ever having to go through that. Because that sort of thing would drive me mad!

It must be so stressful to have to go through that all ther time. I really feel for them.

Fingers crossed that nobody will have those sorts of problems for the other upcoming Majors.

Seems so though the info was vague - like putting Olympics first and such
If Adam does not get his jump technique fixed I am afraid he would not last long in this game, his body won't hold, saying this as his fan :(

Thanks @Tutto. Will miss him this week sad but understandable. Wishing Adam to recover well in time for the Oly Games next month.

There is no reason for the Armenian pair to travel on Russian passports. They have Armenian citizenship - they wouldn't be going to the Olympics if they didn't!

Thank you for the clarification.

Didn't know we were talking about skaters that were going to the Olympics. :slink:

Can anyone tell me who the woman is who is commentating with Chris Howarth? I know it's Tonya something - Tonya Harding??? (Obviously with a different surname, maybe her married name?)
