2025-26 British and Irish figure skating

Ed has given a good account of himself. :) One of the best 3 axels I've ever seen from him. Couldn't get the second triple on the combo, but what he did was clean and that was better than going for the triple and falling.

Was discovery+ easy to sign up to? I wish the BBC would give the option to watch without commentary, Channel 1 in Russia does.
Today I was watching the team skating with the sound off and running each skaters music from a youtube recording. Its a bit of a faff and you don't get to hear the crowd reaction, but its better than hearing Kat Downes talking drivel. Plus the BBC are only dipping in and out so ar.

He did a great job - and well done to the whole team - such an achievement to be there!

I signed up about 4 years ago for the cycling, when it was Eurosport. I got a trial month initially for a lower price because I wanted the Giro and ITV were no longer showing it, then I discovered just how much cycling they had! I don't know whether Discovery have a similar offer. If they don't, you might be able to just cancel after the first month.

I was so annoyed with the BBC's coverage skipping parts of the Team Men's short, and reshowing others after I'd started watching it, that I've defected to Canada, with NordVPN and CBC.
How was CBC last night? I heard Carol Lane was a commentator.

It was good. I've used it the past two days, since Saturday's annoyance. They can be quite outspoken and much less guarded in their opinions than the ISU commentary I've been used to over this season. Also quite detailed about some technical things.

Carol Lane really likes Phebe and James! And the speedy Czechs.

But the Canadian commentators have really got it in for Georgia. They go on and on about how they are all Russians, and I thought their criticism of Berulava's footwork was way over the top. Robin Cousins criticised it too, but in a much more measured way, after the SP performance.

As for Beeb commentary:

We're all used to mansplaining, where a bloke with a dangerously small amount of knowledge loudly talks over a female expert. But here, we had a rare example of the reverse, with Kat Downes repeatedly talking over Robin Cousins, when he had something interesting to say. And then the moment is gone for him to say it without being rude, and we're onto the next skater.

No improvement there then, I have managed to get Discovery+, I do miss hearing Robins commentary though, I have grown up with it, he should have a better co-commentor. BBC coverage has been poor compared to other sports, they have had lots of chat i the studio about skiing, curling and snowboarding but nothing on skating so far.

Catherine Whitaker was commentating on the Opening Ceremony last night, and was pointing out skaters, and talking about what had happened in the skating earlier in the day.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if she does end up commentating on the skating at some stage.

When you have an event like this, spread over a few weeks, it is probably a good idea to have a pool of commentators and rotate them.

Sorry, I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, @viennaskater.

No worries, I have my trusty mute button at the ready. Haven't had to use it yet, because I like Simon and Louise's commentary.

I have been thoroughly enjoying the TNT Sports / Eurosport coverage. It is making me really nostalgic for the old days when Eurosport had the rights in the British Isles.

The only big complaint I have had is that on Discovery+ there are adverts being inserted virtually into what is supposed to be the advert free stream. And when you refresh the page to get rid of them, you have to wind back 20 or 30 seconds to see what you missed. Which leaves you out of sync with others in the competition threads.

The other complaints are only minor. Like not indicating which of the three streams for each competition (Ad-Free, TV, and UHD) is which. And not indicating how long the broadcast is scheduled to be.

By the way, it was announced on Monday that HBO Max will be launching in the UK on 26th March. Which is the second day of action at Senior Worlds. I am assuming that it will be the same date in Italy and Germany / Austria. So, good luck to you! That is one ocassion when I will be relieved to be watching the ISU YouTube stream!

I haven't had any adverts?

Poor Lilah. I wanted Piper and Paul to win the Bronze, but obviously not like this. In a real head to head, not because someone makes a mistake. And she felt so guilty in the interview afterward. I hope they continue.

Honestly, I'd have been happy with any one of the three predicted contenders for the bronze medal. Each would have made a fantastic story in their own right. I'd have liked all three to skate clean, and it just come down to how much they sparkled on the night.

But yeah, this must have been very upsetting for Lilah and Lewis.

Mind you, both Gilles and Poirier and Chock and Bates have finished in this sort of position in prior Olympics. G&P: 7th and 8th, C&B: 8th, 9th, 4th. Hopefully there's life in the old dogs yet.

I feel a little sorry that Guignard and Fabbri will end their career without an individual Olympic medal, but their career palmares are still very good.

I feel like the whole "first British skaters since Torvill and Dean to..." narrative puts a lot of pressure on L&L, in a situation that is already very high pressure. Maybe it was all too much.

And therefore, after the Olympics, when it's calmed down a bit, maybe they will be back to themselves, and able to perform more freely and consistently.

The way Piper and Paul performed last night they deserved their medal and Lilah and Lewis would not have beaten them regardless. But it was tough to see them look so upset in interviews after.

I really hope they can skate their Free Dance clean at Worlds. They performed it so well in the Grand Prix season but have had mistakes at Europeans and now the Olympics. End the season on a high at least.

Well done to Phebe and James on their Olympic debut. It was lovely see Penny in the knc along with Nick as she rarely seems to travel with them to competitions.

I don't get any adverts. And I'm GOING to Worlds so don't need the stream.
