2026 Olympics: General Info and Pregame Chat

Japan has filed a protest over bladegate.
Terrible short-sighted behaviour from the organization. I hope they fix this for short track tomorrow (medals are given as well)

But here's the question : in their protest, what are they hoping to get ? A change of schedule ? That's never going to happen.

That’s what I wonder also. I have no clue.

I heard that the Japanese team had already arranged for all the affected blades to be fixed. So, an apology? Reimbursement for the expense of fixing the blades? Both seem reasonable, and the cost would be a drop in the bucket compared to the overall expense of the Olympics, even if they paid round-trip airfare for someone to accompany the skates to Japan and back.

From now on, I wouldn't be surprised to see skaters testing the podium surface with their hands before they climb onto it. If only someone had done so this time. They could have been given their medals while they stood on the ice or carpet.

All I can think is proper protection for the podium, since there are still medals to be awarded. Skaters will still have the exhibitions after the events are over.
Yes, that goes without saying. But they may have a different podium for the events with less medalists. Which may or may not have a better surface.

We happened to see the podium ceremony for the Scotties curling tournament (Canadian championships?). It was big (to accommodate 6 people per step), but was really low to the ground. The highest step was about the height of a normal stair step, with the others suitably lower. It was odd looking but practical.

The short track medal event tomorrow is the mixed team relay.. so again, a larger podium would be required....

Just watched the mixed relay, short track, which is held on the same ice as figure skating.

The conditions are so bad apparently. The ice is breaking under their skate. Many skaters have crashed. I am no expert about ice making so I don't know if figure skating ice and short track skating ice have different needs... but yeah. I didn't see the podium ceremony so I cannot tell if they fixed it.... (I would suspect it would be the same podium for relays than the team event)

If anyone has more news about blade gate and now bad ice gate... let us know :)

Does anyone know if the majority of the figure skating events have always been at night or is just recently to allow the North American countries to stream live at a reasonable hour?

Funnily enough, I went looking up old Entries / Results pages a few days ago to look at the schedules.

Milano Cortina 2026
Beijing 2022
Pyeongchang 2018
Sochi 2014
Vancouver 2010
Torino 2006

This is as far back as the Entires / Results pages go. If anybody has the schedules for earlier Olympics, please let me know. (It was actually schedules from the 1980's that I was looking for a few days ago).

The last time we had a European Olympics, Sochi 2014, most things started around 19:00 local time. And the last time Italy hosted the Olympics, Torino 2006, everything started at 19:00 local time.

For the North American and Asian Olympics, the times didn't seem to follow this pattern. In Vancouver 2010, everything started beetween 16:00 and 17:00 local time. In Pyeongchang 2018, nearly everything started at 10:00 local time. And in Beijing 2022, the times were all over the place.

I suppose it makes more sense to schedule outdoor events during the day, and indoor events at night. But, I wish that for these Olympics, that they had a set start time like they did in 2006. It would make it easier to keep track of things, and make plans. Yes, they still all start within +/- an hour of 19:00 local time, but the actual start times vary greatly within that band.
