I’m sorry to hear that but glad I wasn’t hallucinating. The guy who composed the music for Amber's free is on a rant on X about how they didn't even ask for his permission to use the music. And that he has to check with his label.
Dropping these here for no reason at all:
From Jimmy Webb, the songwriter
The message from Jimmy Webb was so nice!you know, when rights are secured and permission obtained, musicians are more than happy.
Just posting in case some people are still trying to depict artists are greedy and mean towards poor figure skaters. Artists are just going for what they are due when figure skaters do not take their responsibilities.
the skater, I assume, is the one responsible for getting permission/rightsI have a question about this topic. Suppose a skater skates to someone's music in relative obscurity and no one notices or cares.
The suddenly she is at the Olympics and her performance is broadcast to a billion people by NBC, or some other major media outlet. Wouldn't the music rights holder take compensatory action against NBC rather than the skater?
I would assume so.Question #2. Mikhail Shaidorov just skated in the Olympic Gala in a Kung Fu Panda suit. Did he have to obtain permission from the producers of the movie (Dreamworks)?
As far as I know, it started, as you say, when vocals were allowed to be used, after the Sochi Olympics. I don't quite see why, since the instrumentals used before that often involved a particular solo player or well-known orchestra and there were no objections raised. I don't know why using a human voice opened up a can of worms, but it's certainly quite recent. (Well, when you're my age, 2014 is the day before yesterdayHas this always been an issue about music rights or just stated coming up since vocals have been aloud?
Possibly because a voice is more easily recognizable than an orchestra or even a solo player? As far as I know, it started, as you say, when vocals were allowed to be used, after the Sochi Olympics. I am not so sure it's about that. I think that there was a period when it was a gray area. People were not necessarily bothering with copyrights, other than the blanket licenses used at the venues. However, many factors , including some disputes, social media blocking the music on copyright infringement etc, have led to a more thorough and proper attitude. Expectations have changed now. The laws were always there. They probably were just not applied. I may be wrong but the ISU itself has changed their position on this, asking skaters to secure permissions and rights.Possibly because a voice is more easily recognizable than an orchestra or even a solo player?
For example, how many people could tell the difference between The Blue Danube played by the Vienna Philharmonic and the same piece performed by the Toronto Symphony? My guess is that only a raging audiophile could do that, and there probably aren't many of those among figure skating fans.![]()
lol at your age, right there with you. Always say I am classic (1955) Personally don’t care for the vocals, some are so cringy can’t wait for program to end. Same age group (le sigh). Sometimes vocals are very distracting for me, maybe because I'm a singer.lol at your age, right there with you. Always say I am classic (1955) Personally don’t care for the vocals, some are so cringy can’t wait for program to end. But that’s just me![]()
The original version by Florence Foster-Jenkins maybe? Or Kimera?Same age group (le sigh). Sometimes vocals are very distracting for me, maybe because I'm a singer.
A few years ago, somebody on one of these threads suggested using the Queen of the Night's big aria from The Magic Flute. That's the one where the Queen is in a rage and has an epic tantrum via stratospheric high notes. I tried to talk the poster out of that idea.
Wish I could find the thread but it's gotta be at least 4 years old, maybe more.

Now, with a high level Ice Dance Duo of Women, Natalie Dessay's take on it, I believe that it could be something if they're really good actresses (with a good sound too):
