I post-date the introduction of polio vaccines, but my oldest two brothers each had a friend who were in iron lungs with it as small children. The friends both, decades later, developed post-polio syndrome and one died of that from lung failure. The other friend had his growth stunted and in adulthood endured six months strapped in a rotating bed after surgery to straighten his legs and spine. He says it was worth it to add 6", but that he wouldn't do it again to add more (he's 5'4" now), now that he knows what the treatment is like.
