Takahiko Kozuka is one sophisticated skater with a unique style. It's just that not everybody's a fan of that style. Some find it 'too simple', 'too empty', 'too understated'.

I've seen comments about how Kozuka being too bland, right down to his competitive wear, to which I still say it's a competition. Yes, it's also a performance but not the flipping catwalk. I mean at least it doesn't BURN like some male ice dancer-wear. ANYWAY....

Skating skills alone of Kozuka should at least be in the 8 range. However, knowing how PCs are usually consistent in all portions (consistently high or low in all portions but never truly high in one portion and extremely low in another), he probably didn't get 8s in his skating skills.

Chan was clean today, perhaps a bit less free, a bit tighter - lost about 6 points
Joubert lost about 3 points on the 4-3 - so they gave him perhaps a point more overall, but the result is actually quite consistent
Kozuka was clean today, very similar to GPF - but scored 4 points less, but he already got very low scores at 4CC, compared to GPF
Lysacek rather consistent judging, he got about a point more today
Oda - lost 5 points compared to NHK, he fell though - perhaps he lost about 1 point compared to NHK
Verner - this is rather weird, he had an excellent 4-3 compared to 3-3 at Europeans, where he got those 81.45 points. Meaning +6 points on the tech side, he lost 2 points on the Axel - I am still at +4 points. But he scored even less, so overall he lost 5 points.

I think this might mean that the scores from different competitions aren't comparable and can't be used as predictors (or could, but only to a certain extend) of the future scores.

His skating skills have earned him a 7.35 across the board today.

I would agree with your statement here. Chan's interview after the competition was really telling. If you are fan of current system, you should understand that every competition will be different with different judges and different technical panels. Hence, don't be fooled again Chan.

I was expecting a let-down of some kind and I got it. Oh, well. I'll content myself with the fact that Mroz delivered a good short program and that Javier Fernández made it to the free skate. Third time's the charm - go, Javi!

Scott Hamiloton said Lysacek got an edge call, which would account for most of the difference between first place and second.

Well, Evan got called on it before.

It's like double punishment for Evan - he doesn't try the Quad, therefore lower base value to begin with. By doing the Quad Joubert escapes the edge call on his Flip, Lysacek can't do that. So Joubert probably pocketed +2 on the Lutz (it was great and huge), and Lysacek lost -1 to -2 on the Flip.

I was really sick the last day and a bit and when Dad got the meds my family doctor called in and I took them....Well, so much for watching the second half of the Men. I kinda, sorta saw Vaughn's skate and then dimly heard Patrick's music, but didn't come out of the haze to see him skate. Saw the scores and heard the displeasure of the audience though.

Still catching up on the thread. Back I go to where I was reading before seeing that gem up there.

Joubert: 7.75, 7.70, 7.85

Chan: 7.50, 7.35, 7.40

Kozuka: 6.95, 7.05, 6.90

The Scoring/The T.V. Coverage

After reading all the posts here, it is even more evident that the reason figure skating is barely (or not at all) covered by network t.v. (or espn for that matter) is because of this off the wall scoring system. If even you diehards can't get a handle on it, then the viewing public never will. This spells the death of figure skating for the forseable future. The ISU is a disgrace.

Just becuase it is only covered a small amount in the States doesn't mean that skating is dying. Skating receives massive amounts of attention in Asia and we have great amounts of coverage here in Canada. The debating over results and the system occurred back in 6.0 as well. Debate and discussion is good I think.

On another note, Patrick Chan was absolutely adorable after his skate and in the Kiss and Cry. I just love his attitude!

Sigh...I hate the looks of that draw for tomorrow. If the final flight's all gone clean by the time we get to Brian and he skates another wonky and lack luster program and wins?

This is the Pre Olympic year. We're supposed to be getting people excited and interested in the sport. What happened today just adds on to the reputation the fix is in for certain skaters and makes people even less likely to tune in February for Vancouver.

What the answer is though....I haven't a clue.

Yes!!! Count me in, too. I believe he has the best skating skill. I love his quite and reserved style. He just wants to show his good quality of skating, I love to see him skate in person. Maybe he starts getting recognized more and gets scores he deserves next season.

Tonight, I watched more skating than I have for over a year (last year, I watched Buttle's LP and that was it). The skating was very good, the judging was horrible. I know now why I won't be watching any more skating for some time. When they decide to clean up the judging, please call me and let me know.
