Caroline Zhang's 2009-10 season

^^^
To be totally honest, I do not know what the meaning of what power in figure skating is in Singles skating.

And speed to me, must be commensurate with the variance of the music.

I will watch Caroline for the variance in speed this upcoming season.

A skater can keep up good speed during slow parts of the music, but she needs to do it with fewer strokes so that her feet aren't making quick movements that don't match the tempo. That's where power comes in.

"Power" is basically the distance the skater covers per stroke (which demostrates the power generated by each push). "Speed" is how quickly the skater gets from point A to point B, which could be done in 5 strokes or 10. "Quickness" is how quickly a skater can move her feet, whether it be quick strokes in succession or quick turns or steps. All of these terms are used in the teaching and scoring of the USFSA moves in the field tests. Didn't you take those when you were skating?

Really? AFAIK, Jenny Kirk has never had a lesson from Charlene Wong, and neither have any of the FSU posters who say she isn't a technical coach. So I wonder what they are basing that on?

There were some posters on FSU who have worked with Charlene before and live in the LA area, and they reported that Charlene is more of a 'personality' coach and less of a technical one. She's awfully nice and will do her best to make her students feel good about themselves and their abilities, but she's not much for correcting technical faults.

I figured since Jenny used to train in the LA area that she might have come into contact with Charlene before and would perhaps have an idea as to how she works. I can't see why else she would be dooming Caroline on the basis of a coaching change.

So from her Twitter, it seems like she's getting new skates tomorrow. That means no hope of recovering the stolen ones? :frown:

it makes sense... she has to have a back up plan if they're never found... otherwise she's stuck... breaking the new ones in as soon as possible is a smart idea.

Thank you for all that information. I really appreciate it. i will definitely follow all skaters now and not just Caroline. As for Quickness, my vote is for Brezina all through his step sequences as the best example.

(Unfortunately my tests never went beyond school figures.)

Jenny & Charlene Wong

I did some googling on Charlene Wong and discovered that she did some coaching at Healthsouth along with Frank Carroll. Jenny's last coach was Frank so perhaps she saw Charlene coaching while she was getting lessons from Frank. Here is a link on Charlene:

Somewhere in this thread or over at FSU I read that Caroline skates slower when she is stressed. I have only seen her skate at Nationals in 2007, 2008, and 2009. To me she was very slow - much slower than Rachael. Perhaps she was not as nervous or stressed at Worlds and picked up some speed. I think she has tons of talent but that doesn't mean that there aren't areas that could be improved on. I wish her luck in the coming season.

That's true. But was her bag was mistakenly taken, as in someone had a bag similar to hers and took hers by mistake, or deliberately stolen? If it was the former, then there might be a chance that person would return it to her.

If she was flying into Boston I wouldn't be surprised if it got lost in the baggage department. I have lost or had to wait for misplaced baggage three straight trips there.
Hope her skates and bag turn up.

Well she said that the security cameras showed someone walking off with her bag, so it wasn't lost in baggage...

Caroline skated at the show in Boxborough, MA this evening. I attended the meet and greet. She told me her skates were stolen, but the police recovered them just in time for the show. I will post more details tomorrow. Have a good night.

If you compare Caroline's skating during competitions vs exhibitions (and lesser title competitions), you can note a difference in her speed. She's thinking too much about winning.

I think this is true for many skaters who have high expectations. They start to think more about the prize vs the skating. They get tense, which stiffens them up - resulting in cautious skating that lacks spark and can even look tentative.

Glad she got her skates back and that you got to meet Caroline. Can't wait to hear your review.

What programs did she skate? It would've been cool if you had gotten a sneak preview of her new SP. How was the meet and greet like?

I'm glad Caroline managed to find her skates in time, and that you had a great time as well. :)

How did Brittney Rizo do?

Did you pay extra for the meet and greet, or did you have connections?

Any and all details of the show will be most appreciated!
