Caroline Zhang's 2009-10 season

Just "Bob," you told her? Not THE Bob? Not Polymer Bob, her tireless fan and defender on GS? :p

I hope it was enjoyable! It's hard to tell whether Caroline lived up to your expectations. Was she as heart-stopping a show skater as she seems to be on Youtube? Did you see the four-jump combo? That sounds pretty cool.

Thanks for the report.

Actually, Caroline DID live up to my expectations. I found her to be very soft-spoken, reserved and demure. I did not detect one ounce of celebrity attitude. She seemed to really care about and appreciate her fans. She was signing stuff and posing for pictures with people most of the time she was there. I mean the girl barely had time to eat.

Not to mention, she was certainly the star of the show. Though some of the others were also good. I think the 4 jump combo was the next night.

Thanks to the idiots who berated a 16-year-old for mildly venting her frustration on her own site. I know these haters are not getting upset on behalf of the BPD, but rather have their own hateful agenda.

I'm not sure her updates are protected for me, though. I can still see her replies even though the padlock icon is everywhere. If the user's site is protected, shouldn't you not be able to see any replies and instead see a big message saying "This user's updates are protected"?

Yeah, I saw those posts to her and was pretty upset. I'm glad you told her to ignore them. And yeah, I don't have Twitter so all I see is the big message. You can probably still see them because you have an account and are a follower of Caroline.

Thanks for the review! How was her ice coverage? Did she look slower or faster in person/compared to the other skaters?

Thanks for the report Bob. Sounds like you had an interesting time and I look forward to seeing your pics. So, you think she has grown to 5'4 or 5'5?
My what a giantess our Caroline has become! ;)

She covered the ice very well. As for speed, I would say she was one of the faster skaters. If you like, I can email you her video clips. They are pretty poor, but they should give you an indication of speed.

I am anxious about what you said about the mule kick. Did she do a lutz or a flip?

Thanks for the review, btw!

she got rooked at the gp events.
I think the usfsa had it in for her so they made sure she got the two hardest events.
like the made sure Sasha got two.

the usfsa favorites, ashley, mirai, alissa, rachel and sasha got the easiest events.

only caroline has to skate against sasha with other higher skaters.
rachel just int he us with just her Yu-na, sasha as the main ones for medals.
fumie maybe but i doubt it.
This reads as an opinon which is ok, but if they are statements then I would appreciate some substantive back up.

I find the selection of assignments quite puzzling. Which Fed draws first after all the Feds have selected their 3 personal picks for their respective host GP?

I presume France won the draw to select first. Bearing in mind, the top 6 at Worlds have already been assigned, France was then in position to make its Host competion to be the most competitive of all the others. That is, if the draw means that the winner can then select the remaining skaters in one sweep. That is hardly the gentlemanly thing to do, It should go round to all the other host Feds (picking one at a time) in drawing order.

Which was it? I dunno. If anyone has a factual knowledge of the draw, I think we would all appreciates how that actually takes place.

We can opine that there are backroom deals but that can not be proven.

As to the USFS, it had little choice in selecting the Ladies for SA. The highest ranking skater from Worlds, the returning Olympian, and the National champion.

France picked Sasha and Caroline. No one else picked Sasha, so I presume it was understood that she would get SA. too.

Repeat: If anyone has factual info on the draw, please let us know, otherwise there is no reason to blame the USFS.

Thank you for your report. Did you see her coach Charlene at the meet and greet? I was just curious if she traveled to the event with Caroline.

ChuckM posted the details of the draw a while back. Chuck is very knowledgable and reliable about these things. :agree:

1. Before anything else happens, each of the host federations gets to reserve three skaters from its own country. Skate America chose Sasha, Rachael, and "TBD," leaving a potential spot either for Michelle or for another U.S. skater who had only one assignment.

They did not choose the National Champion, Alissa (possibly Alissa requested that she not be chosen), and they did not choose Caroline even though Caroline had strong results in international competition at the end of the season last year.

2. There is a draw to see who gets the first choice in the first round. In the first round each host makes its choice of either Kim, Rochette or Ando. Skate America chose Kim (but we don't know whether Skate America got to choose first or second and snapped her up, or whether they chose last and had to take her because she was the only one left.)

3. There is another draw for order in selecting either Asada, Flatt or Lepisto. Since the USFSA had already reserved Rachael, they passed in this round.

4. Then there are separate draws for rounds 3, 4, 5, etc., until all the places are filled. There are some restrictions on who can be selected because certain skaters are guaranteed two or one assignments, so someone has to take them whether they want to or not.

There has been speculation that France got lucky for the ladies' draws and got to pick first or second in several of the rounds, but we don't really know.

The federations have two different strategies available to them.

(A) In the case of the ladies field in France, for instance, the host country has no contending skater. In this case it is to the advantage of the host federation to choose the best skater available in each round. The French federation did this, with the result that the ladies' field at Eric Bompard is packed.

(B) If the host federation has a skater who they are trying to prop up and get into the finals, it is to their advantage to invite the worst available competitor in each round. For instance, for the Skate America men's event, the USFSA chose Lysacek in the preliminary round. To give Lysacek the best chance to win, they did not choose Weir or Abbott with their other two protected host picks, and they did not choose any other highly ranked skater either, except Verner (they had to take someone from 4-6).

There are two other considerations.

(i). The top skaters can express their preferences, through their federations. The host federations do not have to honor these requests, but they try to if if suits their purposes. Yu-ma Kim requested Skate America and Eric Bompard, and those two host federations granted her wishes by inviting her.

(ii) The host federations can make deals with each other to get the most spots for their skaters. For instance, Skate America could agree to invite Delobel and Schoenfelder in exchange for France inviting Sasha.

The USFSA was very successful at this, getting the maimum number of spots for U.S. skaters possible under the rules.(no more than three skaters from any one country per event.)

By the luck of the draw Caroline Zhang got a tough assignment at Eric Bompard, and a relatively easier one at Skate Canada.

Rachael Flatt got two comparatively easy assignments, Cup of China and Skate America. However, this was not favoritism, it was because she fell into a special category, having finished fifth at Worlds. She was guaranteed not to have to skate against Asada (number four), for instance.

Sasha got the plum assignment at Skate America, giving NBC television a possible ratings boost for that event. This was announced two weeks before the draw. At the draw, Eric Bompard also selected her. We don't know whether the USFSA called in some favors or whether the French Fed just wanted her anyway -- probably the latter. Why wouldn't they?

No lutz or flip on Saturday. No axels. It makes me wonder if Charlene is helping her rework them and doesn't want her reinforcing problematic technique which she would obviously revert to during exhibitions.

One of the issues with the show was that about 1/6 or more of the ice was taken up with a staging area and there were two rows of chairs on the ice along the side. In total, about 1/3 of the ice surface was not available. I think that that fact might have caused her and a number of the other skaters to skate conservatively from a speed perspective. However, I didn't think that she was inordinately slow.

wt dress did she wear ?
caroline should do more shows!!!

She wore a dark steel blue dress for the Lullaby and a pale pink dress for on my own with an ombre (pink into pale purple) for On My Own. I've seen her wear both before; the former for a short program performance.

On Saturday, she was totally in control of her skating and really beautiful to watch. Castelli and Shnapir were also pretty spectacular with a perfect, huge throw double axel. It made me wonder if a throw triple axel was already in the works. Finally Yasmin Siraj was also a pleasure to watch and she's only 12 years old.

Thanks for taking the time to type up a review of your first club show, PolymerBob. These types of shows usually feature one main headliner (guest skater invited from out of town), the club's top skaters -- 2009 World Junior Pairs bronze medalist Simon Shnapir is from Colonial FSC, along with Christopher Fernandes (not Hernandez -- it's tough to get names right when you don't have a program and have to rely on the rink's announcer ;)), who placed 7th at Novice Nationals -- prominent local area skaters -- Marissa Castelli (Shnapir's partner), Brittney Rizo (one 'z') and Yasmin Siraj (5th at Novice Nationals) -- are all from the Skating Club of Boston, plus the host club's skaters of all ages and abilities from Learn-to-Skate classes on up. It's great that Caroline (and her mom) took the time to fly out from California for this benefit show, and I hope the club raised a lot of money for Sherry's House.

P.S. Thanks to efreedman for sharing details from the show you attended.

There was a third dress. When Caroline was at the reception desk signing autographs, she had her USFSA jacket on. When she got up, she took off her jacket and she was wearing a somewhat formal looking dress/gown under it. It was white but heavily patterned with these green designs. I actually thought she was a little overdressed for the occasion. Brittney had blue jeans on.

I think that Caroline and Brittney Rizo have different perspectives on skating right now. Brittney is bypassing this Olympic season to start pursuing other objectives. Per a conversation that I had with her Mom, she wants to become a neurologist or neuropsychologist.

Isn't Brittney local and perhaps known to many of the people that were there? As a guest and billed as the "star attraction" Caroline may have wanted to dress up a little. Maybe she inquired about what to wear and was asked to dress formally. Maybe afterwards she was going somewhere formal with her mom. Didn't she have a suitcase stolen? Maybe her jeans or more casual clothing was in the bag with the skates. Or perhaps Caroline was feeling "Princessy ;) There could be many reasons - but I see nothing unusual about a young lady being dressed up for a meet and greet.
