Question about Carolina Kostner

Last edited:
Translation of the second interview:

On her work with her mental coach:
"Our sport requires a lot of mental strength and that's why I am learning a lot not only for how to handle competitions but also for my personal daily life.

On the rumors that this could be her last season:
"I will skate as long as I have fun and as long as it is important to me, as long as I can still achieve something. And when I have achieved what I want to achieve, I will retire."

On why her 3-3 has not been there for a year:
"Well, the 3-3 needs a break too from time to time :p"

On the next big events:
"I think the fact that I've nearly skated a clean program today shows that we are on the right track. There are still 3 months remaining till the Olympics and there is still time and room for improvement."

nice to see there are a lot of fans out there. I love her and right now just hope she manage to keep it together. I think the Italian media has to blame herself by taking her confidence away. They take every moment to find something to criticize her. After her beautiful skating at Merano Cup, they said on the local news how beautiful she was (what happen seldom, they often criticize her too), but Art on ice pointed out she was skating a program with not so difficult jump lay out.

How can this help her to gain her confidence? She is a lovely girl. You find vids of the warm up at TEB in her official forum in the vids section if you login. I'm so a big fan of her and know she can do it. I love her stile, her maturity and all her skating. Caroll has made her change all of her jumps and I think she just needs the time to be used on it. If you look at CoC SP or Merano Cup LP, you see how she got better every time, and she is way better than all the last year. Carolina never was an early skater, if you look bak, her GP season become better the last two years, but before she got better from every competition she did. And this year she had no competition before GPs. So lets hope she will be on the top on the right time

I admit I don't see what's so special about Carolina Kostner. Can one of you fans give me a link to one of her better programs? I just started following skating closely over the last couple seasons and I know she hasn't been doing well. I'd like to see her at her best. Thanks in advance.

To npavel: really, I don't quite understand your comment...I'm Italian and I'm a Carofan (i've been supporting here since 2001), but I don't get your point here...

why do you think that the fault for her problems comes from the Italian media? what's wrong with the article you linked?

I mean, I'm a fan of Carolina, but I think that it was also her choice to gain the attention of the media (meant in a good way) and if she became one of the symbol of the Turin Olympics surely it was not only the media fault. also she did many interviews, at the beginning of this season there was a TVservice upon her new life in LA and so on...The media had also helped a lot to make her become an important representive of figure skating in Italy and I think that, yeah, she's good and surely they looked for her, but when you accept this attention, you should also be prepared to the dark side of the matter.
you can't always expect them to only compliment you, when you make a mistake they'll always be there...it's sad, but it happens and it's better to be prepared to their critics..

second matter: what's wrong with the article you linked?
yeah, it's not complimentig as fan did, but perhaps it's not supposed to be written from fans..also I was in Merano and I can say that Caro's programs are beautiful, but there's still something missing. As a fan my thought after the SP was "it's a bit better, but these jumps are not sufficient" (and that was said also in caro official forum). the LP was better, really she improved, but still you could tell it's not ready...

I hope that she can solve her problems with jumps by the end of January and show out all her talent!!!

IMO, she has never skated a great LP.

She has wonderful Short Programs, though. Check out her performances at 2005 Worlds and 2007 Worlds.

Wicked I admit I don't see what's so special about Carolina Kostner. Can one of you fans give me a link to one of her better programs? I just started following skating closely over the last couple seasons and I know she hasn't been doing well. I'd like to see her at her best. Thanks in advance.

I am a fan. What I like about her is her jumps. Not all, actually, but 3F-3T-2L? combo was fab. Her spins and spirals do not impress me too much. Her spins are not so fast or centered. Without the long limbs, perhaps her spirals wouldn't have that wow effect. But I love her skating and steps. They are great.

I thought that her Worlds 2008 SP in black pants was very good and she came into the first place. Her Canon SP from the previous year at Euro was very good, too.

to dorispulaski, in the artikle it seems like Caro didn't well, but she was great. She had 5 tripples and all but one with excellent quality. She had a great joy in her skate and it was so effortless. Ok she hadn't the luz, but all the other tripples were there and she showed a really nice 3lz in the warmup, so she still can do it. For this time it was important to skate with confidence, and she did. Why can't they just say god? but no, it seemed to me almost Vale was better, just didn't manage to do her best in the moment. I love Vale too, and I hope both will medal at Euros, but I think Caro has all the package and when she has the confidence bak, chance to medal.

to Wicked, in my eyes, the best LP were
2007 Euros with 6 tripples
2007 GPF in Torino, with 6 tripples.

the message posted by dorispulaski was mine, it was my first post and I got banned, so he kindly reposted it...

I got your point, only I continue to think that as a fan we can say that in Merano she skated good, but a journal should tell both the positive and negative comments...just my personal opinion, but seeing also, for example, the situation of Mao Asada, against whom the media has discussed whether she must or not change coach, what's wrong,..ecc.I see this is the general attitude from journalists...

Thanks guys! I watched the vids you all recommended. The Pachelbel program was gorgeous. I really loved the program from 2003 too. There's something that's a bit awkward about her skating. You see it in the program from 2003 and it's still there today. It just seems odd to me that she would not be losing that quality as she gets older. It also seemed like she had more flow in her older programs. The jumps were exactly where they should have been and not too telegraphed. In the more recent programs I really felt that she was setting the jumps up for a long time and they didn't flow as well. Did she change choreographers after 2005?

Ooo Carolina...
I've never really been a Carolina fan, but watching her lately really is kinda painful, because she obviously has a ton of talent. Her 2007 Worlds SP was incredible. I really do have my doubts about her ever getting it together though. She seems to have the same problem as Czisny and Verner; they just can't keep it together in competition; none of them have really figure out a way to fix the nerve problem. I find Carolina very hard to root for because she's "on" so infrequently and when she is, it seems more luck than anything.

go carolina !!! believe in yourself

i would love to see a clean mao, carolina( but with her 3-3's) and yuna at the olympics.... who would win?

Yes she did. Up till that it was Megan Smith, then Kurt Browning (the Olympic season) and after that Lori Nichol

She needs to go back to Kurt! Those programs were great they showed her off to advantage.
