Caroline Zhang's 2009-10 season

Oh, 16 inches of shorn hair! I hope she donated it...I could see someone being grateful for it. I wish my own hair were so silky and straight. I'd feel a little self-conscious about donating mine. :p

I wonder how Caroline's skating is coming along. Can't wait to see her new
do.

Cool article, but I wouldn't say Mirai was a loser. She fixed her UR problem at least on all her triples as SC, and came in 3rd in the freeskate and really should have taken that bronze medal home.

I don't think Leonova's going to medal at the Olympics....she steps out of a lot of her jumps and her presentation is still kind of juniorish. Anyone else agree? She's definitely fun to watch and could become another Slutskaya, but she's not there yet

Agree, Leonova not in the running to medal at these Olympics unless either a skating miracle OR a judging scandal happens. Not yet her time. IMHO, she has been put on the "fast-track" by the judges this year though, as evidenced by her PCS marks.

Back to thread topic: has anybody seen Caroline during her practices lately? I assume she is still training intensively and will only take a brief time-out for a holiday break...

She got lucky at Junior Worlds with Caroline being as sick as she was. Still, it's hard not to be happy for Alena.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Alena is such a happy skater I love it. I also like how her music is different from everyone else's , more exciting! Is there another Russian lady going to the Olympics with her?

Yup; Russia has 2 spots in Ladies! I'm not too familiar with Russian skaters but I'm thinking Ksenia Makarova could be the 2nd lady since Shelepen and Ovcharova are both too young.

I'm excited to see Caroline again at US Nationals. Her skating has some truly beautiful qualities, faults and all. I hope she does well but will the USFSA stop sending her to JW please? Send skaters like Maxwell or Baga!

Better Caroline than Ashley and Katrina! A little too old, don't you think?

And I hope Ksenia goes, she is a lovely skater! Her performances at JGPF were great!

If Caroline lands most of her jumps she will be at an advantage, I don't expect Alissa to land more than 4 triples and the same goes for Sasha if she even shows up...

I think the assignment to Junior Worlds is determined by performance. The best age eligible skaters who don't go to senior Worlds get sent. The object is to win. I think in most years, the senior skaters are too old. It's only recently that most of our top ladies are young enough to go to Junior Worlds.

I think that is largely true. It gets complicated sometimes when the best performances by age-eligible skaters who aren't going to senior Worlds occur in both the junior and senior competitions at Nationals. Or good results (medals) at the JGP final aren't exactly reproduced in the relative standings of the skaters involved at Nationals.

That may mean that there are more age-eligible skaters who "earned" a trip to Jr. Worlds with good performances in three different competitions than there are spots available. If so it becomes a judgment call as to which ones to send.

The decision processes were different back in the 1990s and earlier when Junior Worlds was in December and the JGP didn't exist yet or held its final in the spring.

There's only one decade of comparison for the current schedule. With slightly different situations each year.

Wagner, 18, is in her last year of ISU Junior age eligibility this season and I definitely feel that she has "outgrown" Junior Worlds. Hacker wasn't "too old" by the ISU age rules last season, and she technically earned her first and only trip there as the first alternate with her placement (6th) at Nationals after Nagasu (5th) withdrew. Personally, I am hoping that 8 different U.S. ladies will get the Olympic/4 Continents/Junior Worlds assignments this season.

I just watched Caroline's exhibition from the TEB gala exhibition show and she fell on a triple loop :(

Hmm, maybe she is starting to doubt herself. The triple loop is her best jump! I've seen her step onto the ice an hour after getting out of bed, warm up for just five minutes, then land a pefect triple loop. . .

Nice idea in theory, but the USFSA wants to get the best results possible, our standigs at worlds determine how many spots the US gets at worlds the next year. 4CC and Junior Worlds don't seem to matter as much, and I do wish they just sent junior level skaters to junior worlds (the programs are a different length). But Worlds and Olympics should be the same people, unless the lower placing people went to the Olympics instead, but that doesn't really make any sense either.

It's just more that say US nationals results were 1.) Rachael 2.) Ashley 3.) Alissa 4.) Mirai , if Rachael and Ashley went to the Olympics and Alissa and Mirai to worlds, you could end up with a situation of Alissa and Mirai both placing below top 10 at worlds, or at least having results that added up to more than 13. If both were to bomb, say finish 13 and 16, that would add up to 29 and the US wouldn't even get two spots at the Worlds next year. We do NOT want that to happen, which is why I think the teams are for the most part the same

Read Sylvia's comment again. She was only talking about Olympics, Four Continents, and Junior Worlds. Nothing about Worlds. ;)

I remeber seeing her working with Lori Nichol at Toyota Sports Center during the summer of 2008 and she was popping of triples minutes after getting on the ice, she did not skate like the other elite skaters who made a big deal of setting up for their jumps and working upr from singles to doubles to triples in consecutive order of difficult. Caroline was throwing triples around like they were doubles. She had just started working in her 3/3 and fell or missed most of them, but everything else was effortless. Ahhhh, the good old days.

Ohh , well in that case then yes, that makes sense. I feel like no one cares about 4CC and there are always a lot of random skaters at Jr. Worlds
