Will Mao make the Oly team?

Caroline at SC got a level 4 for her spiral sequence in the long and got a 1.80 GOE for it, so she got 5.2 points for that element which is worth more than a triple loop jump. Yuna at SA though also got a level 4 for her spiral sequence and a 1.40 GOE for it, probably because she is so fast, so even though Mao, Mirai, Alissa have more flexible positions in the spirals, it doesn't really make a difference because less flexible skaters can do better.

Not sure if that's really true.

Granted a less flexible skater can do better than Mao, Mirai & Alissa, but a less flexible skater must bring something else to the table to earn pos GOE. Yuna makes up for the lack of super extended positions because she can skate as fast as Korea's national short track team. (Well...exaggerated, but you know what I mean)

If you just hold a position long enough but your positions are not flattering and/or you skate slow, you may get the base value, but no GOE.

Also we should remember that skaters can do spiral ONCE in a program, but they have to do 3 jumping passes (for SP / up to 7 for LP). And they also get to do multiple spins. So the biggest chunk of their TES comes from jumps not the spiral. I don't think spirals make a huge difference in ranking UNLESS the competition's super close.

Mao's spiral

where did you hear that? do you have source?

Sorry if I gave you an information easy to misunderstand. More correctly, it is reported that Mao said in the interview with Fuji TV on 21th she gave some modification to her spirals in her programs to keep her element's level better.
In the same interview she added she was very happy when she read her fortune told that the lucky place for her in February is the ice rink.

You make good points, I just wanted to point out that to get a level 4 on your spiral sequence , flexibility is not required. Flexibility in spins and spirals will give you good GOEs, but if you get 4s for them anyways you shouldn't be worried about falling behind. Rachael Flatt normally gets level 4s for her spiral sequence and most of her spins even though her positions aren't the best. Rachael and her coaches really understand CoP and that is why, in addition to her great jumps, she consistently gets good scores.

This idea of spirals and spins not being worth much also makes the case for why Sasha will need to land a lot of jumps to have a shot at coming in 1st or 2nd at nats. Spins and spirals are part of the TECHNICAL score, and if Sasha was judged fairly I think her PCS scores would be about even with everyone else because though she'd get really high marks for performance/execution and interpretation, her skating skills, transition/linking footwork, and choreography/composition scores would probably be average, and worse than a lot of the other ladies. Sasha doesn't have very good edges or stroking ability and skates pretty slowly, plus apart from her gumby moves I don't remember her having an awful lot of tricky choreography going on between the jumps.

so glad to see her smiling at the end, hope to see her back at nationals

4 continents

An article in Japan Times seem to think Mao is a lock for the Olympics:

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/sp20091224it.html

In the same interview as I referred to above, Mao said she is going to participate in 4Continents Competition in addition to Worlds. She says she will be OK, because she took a long rest after Rostelecom Cup. She seems now really motivated to complete her programs this season, which she thinks is nothing impossible seeing that she has achieved them in the last season.
There are different oppinions as to her participation in 4 Continents Competion. Some say she should have decided about it after getting the result of Nationals. However, Japan Skating Union is usually to announce the assignments of the players for the above competitions just after Nationals, there may be no other options for her.
Hope she will give us her best performance as expected since last season.

Of course she will go. An Olympics without Mao would be ice skating without a judging scandal. The better question for debate would have been: Does she deserve to go? If she fails to land her triple axels at Nationals convincingly, I would argue she does not. She has set her own standards and if she can't even meet those, then arguably a Yukari and Akiko who can skate cleanly and confidently deserve the nod more than Mao.

Thanks for the link.

I don't like that writer in particular (b/c I find his articles to be very biased), and TBH I don't know how he can make the following claim:

This weekend isn't so much about Mao making the Olympic team, but showing she is a legitimate medal contender after a calamitous 12 months. Mao is a lock for the team as a Japan Olympic Committee symbol athlete and with the massive amount of marketing packaged around her.

The only way she doesn't make the trip to Vancouver is if she gets injured.

when I haven't heard such claims from anyone else. I've yet to hear the official announcement from the JSF that Mao already got the other spot. Unless "Jack" has an "in" with the JSF officials (which I highly doubt as a gaijin working for an English newspaper in Japan -- it's not like he's a Yomiuri Shimbun reporter) I think he's making a bunch of assumptions.

BTW -- I'd love to see Mao skate well. She really deserves a lil happiness this season (competition wise).

Going to 4CC won't be a big problem for Mao b/c this year's 4CC is in Korea, which is about an hour's flight away from Japan. She can compete there, get some international judges' feedback (to see what she needs to work on for Oly) and go to Vancouver.

I am not too keen on this 4cc stuff. No matter how well she redeems herself at nationals she still has a lot of work to do at home before the olympics. Didn't she skate great at 4CC last season and then messed up at worlds? Evan got injured at 4CC in 2008 and had to withdraw from worlds. I just don't like it.

Mao is GOING to the Olympics, even if she bombs, she just is. I don't know if she will do well at the Olympics and if she doesn't maybe some other skater can finally grab the attention of the Japanese public. I hope it's Akiko or that cute like junior skater Kanako Murakami, who just won the JGPF :agree:

Oh, she is her ex-coach Machiko Yamada. She has coached Midori, Yukari, Mai, and Kanako Murakami.

She says:
- She is seeing Mao almost everyday at her rink.
- Mao has good days and bad days.
- She kind of wonders how clean Mao's jumps may look. Currently, it is extremely important to land a jump cleanly. The evaluation also depends on judges' eyes. But she somewhat feels that that the situation so far might not have seemed to be in favor of Mao.
- She tells Mao that she is luckier than Midori. Today Japan has other brilliant skaters than Mao. But at Midori's time, she was the ONE, which made Midori suffer a lot. Mao can just walk her own way without being crushed under pressures.
- (Being asked what the audience should be looking forward to seeing at the Japanese Nationals) Now things can be puzzling. Say, the audience may find, "Wow this girl was wonderful" and then the scores of the two programs are combined, "Oh, that girl won!" So it is a bit difficult to figure out (for the lay audience). But each skater prepares for this event and perhaps the audience should be looking forward to seeing how each of them tries.

Mao herself basically repeats herself. Almost exactly the same as what she has been saying so far. No updates.:p Oh, she uses a newer expression. She wants to be good friends with 3A. She also looks happier than before.

Mai says:
Mao may have been stressed having been abroad for a long time. But now she has her own pace of life back home. Her coach is visiting her, too (Is she referring to the assistant coach, perhaps?). So she would be fine.

------------------------------------------------

I wonder if Machiko can be her coach again. She seems a very humane, mature person with a balanced outlook and perceptive, relaxed interpersonal communicative styles (see how often she smiles and laughes; despite talking about sensitive issues, the way she talks sounds very relaxed, calm, and optimistic). She seems a little bit like a mother in downtown. She seems very down to earth. These could balance out Mao's determined mind. I feel that this could work better than TAT's toughness. Flexibility is greatly important under the CoP. Besides, Mai sounds that Mao is happier back in Japan.

Daisuke is doing fine with his long-term coach alone. His coach, Utako, does not have international reputation. But it does not affect his PCS. Machiko is an internationally well-known coach.

Thanks so much, Bennett, for the translation! :)

Yes, I noted the relaxed friendly air about Sensei Yamada from the first, smiling throughout, which made me curious as to who she was. What a legendary coach! I too hope that Mao has her first coach around, someone that she feels comfortable with, whom knows her inside & out, just like Sasha Cohen has John Nicks back by her side.

Accroding to an article(this↓)Mao skated smooth and speedy. That means her skating comes back!
ttp://sankei.jp.msn.com/sports/other/091225/oth0912251830019-n1.htm
Besides it is said that she changed taking off.So she doesn't have to have eye contact with the judges and her jumps are coming up!!

By the way she changes not only juping tech but choreography.Though I don't know whether it is SP or LP.

The Ladies' SP is taking place right now! Suzuki holds a 63.84
Mao, Miki and Yukari have yet to skate.
Here's the link: http://deep-edge.net/or/2009_L_sp_e.html
No, it's tomorrow.
I'm afraid what you are reading is the skaters' results in regionals.
What you thought "yet to skate" is the blank derived from the bye the top ladies get when they are designated as the skaters to receive "special reinforcement" from JSF.

Oh oops. You are right. I feel so stupid for refreshing that page, hoping that the other skaters' results would pop up. I'm so sorry. The link was in the Japanese Nationals page. I checked again. You are absolutely right -- the ladies' SP is on tomorrow. The mens' SP was on. Takahashi got 90+

According to the news, Mao has changed the direction in which she jumps 3A.
Before, she jumped just in front of judges and it made her too nervous to clearly jump. This is one of the points she changed her contents . About spirals, there might not be a big change except for the time of keeping her leg up.

that's nothing. Plushenko got 100+ at russian national SP. Of course they offer +3 bonus for a quad and 3+3 in ladies. Wonder what Chan and Lysacek will get at their national. :chorus:
