Any Sasha updates?

They are reporting over at FSUniverse that it has been "confirmed" that Sasha will compete. I think they are stretching the facts a little. But I hope they are right.

It will be confirmed when her name is called in the Ladies' Short Program and she gets into her opening pose...

It will be 'confirmed' when she shows up on the ice-and actually competes. Of course I have high hopes now-and it's looking for real the closer we get to the ladies event. :)

I think you are right - and even at 80 he is still the only coach who can handle Sasha ;)

Mr. Nicks was born April 22, 1929. He turned the big Eight O just this past year. I got curious so I looked it up-and according to a pop culture site also born that year were Anne Frank, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , Roger Bannister, Audrey Hepburn to name a famous folk. Popeye was created as well as 7-UP.

Winners at the 1929 World Figure Skating Championships included Gillis Grafstrom for the men, Sonja Henie in ladies, and Lilly Scholz and Otto Kaiser in Pairs. Mr. Nicks of course grew up to skate in pairs and coach some well-known skaters himself.

I keep expecting to see an image of Sasha in NBC/Uni-Sports' Oly promos, whether those ads featuring the chain of athletes or the intros to the events. But so far zilch, nada, zip. Has anyone else seen her featured?

So much for a fix being in.

Funny how the only coach that can handle Sasha is 80 atnd probably has trouble remembering what she did in practice last week ...

Anyhow, it's cool that Sasha is competing. After seeing the men's and pair's events I was glad to see the favorites (Lysacek, Mclaughlin/Brubaker) not be held up. Jeremy beat Evan by a deserved 4 points and Keuana and Rocke were all the way down in 5th, and aren't going to the Olympics.

This all makes me think that if Sasha shows up and isn't stellar, some of the top ladies could easily pass her. I know she says she has great practices but after such a long time off, and at the age of 25, I can't help but wonder who good she will really be. I mean, Mirai talked about how much harder it was to be 15 instead of 14 in terms of being tired, injuries, and having a slower metabolism, and 25 is a far cry from 15. As lovely as skaters like Alissa and Joannie are, both of who are younger than Sasha too, they both seem to mess up quite a bit and Alissa's skating has certainly gotten slower ever since her breakthrough season in '05. Fumie, Julia, and Susanna are unable to do a long program without a bunch of doubles at this point.... So I'm just saying Sasha will be fighting an uphill battle because of: 1.) her age 2.) her time off 3.) her injury 4.) her not being as used to CoP (she might not be able to milk it as well). But we'll see

I agree this comeback has not gone as planned - just as I don't believe "practice reports" are the same as competing under pressure.

And yes, there is a good chance Sasha won't be good enough to make the team.

I do think when Sasha skates next week she will be judged like the others. We just saw that in the Pairs and in the Mens SP.

It also appears that the top two Ladies at Natls will be the two chosen for the Olympic team. I like all of them and will be happy to support the two who earn their spots on the Olympic team at Natls.

I think Sasha's return has added a degree of excitement to the Ladies event.
Nobody here wants her held up and most of us will just be happy to see her compete again.

Win, lose or draw, this season has been Sasha's greatest performance. She has held the audience enthralled without ever setting foot on the ice.

As Tallulah Bankhead once said to a young upstart ingenue who thought the great one was over the hill, "I can upstage you, dahling, without even being on stage.".

Then she proceeded to do it. As she exited just before the young actress's big scene, she placed a wine glass on a table, precariously ballanced on the edge. Will it fall or won't it? All during the scene the audiences' attention was fixed on Tallulah's glass.

My biggest concern re. Cohen's return was her getting held up even after a dismal performance. But I'm surprised and impressed with the way the event is being judged so far. One of the faves didn't skate well enough to be in the top 2 and it wasn't given to them. Likewise, they missed the Oly team. This gives me hope that no one will be held up and thus we can now focus attention on the skating.

I agree, and I'm interested to see if this keeps up with the men's FS today. Hopefully it will. I feel like men's and pairs scores are generally less controversial than the ladies though, especially b/c in the SP most of the ladies land the exact same jumps.

An excellent point!

OK, so Sasha's a "granny" who should move out of the way for the next generation, and her coach is senile. Any more ageist comments to add to the conversation? :disapp:

Haha, I'm just kidding. I think it's fun to watch granny's like Fumie and Julia and Poykio skate because when they nail a program it's sick and when they don't, you can blame their old age instead of them! :agree: .

Ultimately though, once you're older than 14 or 15 the age becomes less of a big deal. It's easiest to do 3lz-3toe when you are 4-11 and 80 pounds, which most people can't maintain after the age of 14. Sasha is probably actually pretty close to that size now though.

After watching what has happened at Nationals thus far, it can go either way for Sasha Cohen, either a.) they will receive her with open arms or b.) tear her a new one.

Either way, I respect Miss Cohen so much for living up to the motto it's better to have tried & failed, then never to have tried at all.

Go out there, Sasha, and skate your heart out! That's all that matters. You are a winner in my book, win or lose, you're a winner in my book!!!!!!!!

:rock::love::rock::love:GOOOOOOO, SASHA, GOOOOOOO, SASHA!!!!:love::rock::love::rock:

My biggest concern is that you would even go there. Are you always so sad???

Why USFSA? I'd say he has little confidence in Sasha and her team.

This is not coming from a direct source at NBC...I have a friend who works for a sports network (not for Figure Skating) and even she has said it's very important to NBC to have a leading lady heading to the Olys. NBC has been promoting B/A and Evan thanks to their success this last quad (and the skier who's name escapes me), but would love for a recognizable Lady skater with a human relation story (Sasha and her Comeback trail full of fluff about injuries and set backs and equipment issues and coaching changes to return "home" to Nicks, etc, fits the bill nicely). I'm not saying the fix is in, who knows, but I don't think the fact M/B(I/B) didn't get held up(the nod for the team over E/L) has any indication that TPTB are going to treat Sasha like some no-namer unless she seriously splats all over the place. She will get star treatment, and if she is even semi-clean, watch for straight 9's...

But as I said before...I don't care what Sasha's PCS marks are or if she's overlooked on any edge calls as long as she should be ahead of whoever she beats.
