Jump/Throw Face | Golden Skate

Jump/Throw Face

I hate jump faces. It's not fair to freeze the moment when the tremendous centrifugal force distorts the furiously rotating skater's face who is attempting an anti-gravity feat at the same time.

Watching a skater take off and rotate in the air is a sight to marvel, and s/he still has to land on the slippery ice on a 4mm thick blade. Instead of enjoying such a beautiful and athletic endeavor, why do we need to see the contorted face our naked eyes don't really get to see?

Because, skatefiguring, there are also people who look beautiful (see SB's post on Kanako Murakami) during a jump. Katia Gordeeva used to smile in the middle of a throw or a split triple twist. But then again, I'd be smiling, too, if it was the love of my life throwing and catching me.

Miss Murakami is by no means immune from wacky jump faces. No skater who attempts multi-revolution jumps can be, I think. The skater is contracting his/her entire body to make the rotations go, while fighting immense centrifugal forces, all in a really short period of time.

It would be really unfair to judge the quality of a skater by their jump faces. But on the other hand, it is totally fair to make fun of them because that ish is hilarious to all.

Speaking of, Alissa seems to completely close her eyes during parts of a jump. Maybe that's why she falls on them so much. :p

I think Plushenko is a handsome man, but he had the most ghastly jump faces. I also saw a few pics where Patrick Chan also showed his tongue while jumping.

I didn't look for pictures, but Jeffrey Buttle always has his mouth wide open when he jumps, and his upper teeth become very visible because of the way his upper jaw protudes.

A more recent one of Rachael Flatt-her leg position in the air is much improved, but the funny face is still there

zomg these were funny in a laugh-with-not-at way. Rachael looks FRAUGHT with worry (is it about landing the jump or something else entirely, a big exam or school paper, say, or her upcoming deb ball? lol), Jeremy REALLY looks like Drac in that photo, and Dai has helicopter hair (does it help him with the height on his jumps, perhaps?). Chan, gee, not sure what to call that, zombie for sure, but also sort of Lurch-like -- freaky! Again, this is laughing with good humor. Anyone's facial features can be squashed into odd shapes by centrifugal forces.

One thing is certain; no matter how weird the jump face, look at the muscles on each skater!
