2011-2012 Program Stuff

I cannot believe I'm saying this but I enjoyed Chock and Bates more than all the dances, and it wasn't even close. I dont like the short version of Scott and Tessa's dance. Last years free dance was almost a masterpiece but this SD only makes me wonder how good the free dance COULD have been.

I got to tell yah....i completely agree...didn't want to say anything...lol...but I think C/B nailed it....and I enjoyed it more than V/M...i think V/M's truncated version of their free doesn't have the same 'zing'...of course they deserved their scores...but it really didn't do anything for me....C/B on the other hand i thought knocked it out of the park...i actually thought Chock moved her body in a more 'latin' way than Tessa. At about 12 secs into C/B routine they do these subtle movements in front of the judges that were absolutely superb...and Chock totally nailed that little section....Tessa's movements look more 'club-like' to me...I mean I am no expert in dance but i lived in a latin american country for 7 years so i have a general idea of how latin movement looks on someone that was born into that culture compared with someone who learned it for competition....and for me that's the difference between Madison and Tessa in this rhythm...They were both great, it's just that one looks like she was dancing in the streets of Havana while the other was in a latin dance club in New York.....But as we all know V/M skating is out of this world and their rumba steps were excellent and with this dance they will be 1 or 2 at worlds...btw, love the twirl Tessa does in front of Scott right before their ending position....Can't wait for the free dances!!!

A news report from French Masters containing the opening of P/B's FD
So, Natalie's dressed like a mummy and they're using "The Feeling Begins." Cool lift, though.
Isn't Fabian's costume just as eye-catching? :p I think it's more of a new take on an old lift, and the program supposedly includes other pieces of music - this is just what ended up on TV.

BTW, look for the Masters gala finale on the same channel, and you'll see Joubert and Amodio (?) attempt a dance lift toward the end.

I am saying nothing of the kind. It think it's really great that they are clean and that is what I expect because the majority of the time their technique is amazing. However, I don't see much beyond that.

I'm going to respectively disagree. At first glance, I had that "oh! They're brother and sister they're going to suck at Latin" perception everyone has as I watched. The second time, I watched it and I found that I think there's potential. I think both, particularly Maia, is definitely feeling the music.

It's early in the season. I think it's similar to D/W's tango FD from last season. It was very awkward (while technically sound) at first but got refined and better as the season went on. The Shibs has proved not to be SD skaters early in the season. Last year they had SD scores in the 50s and by Worlds they were around 66. They scored 58 here, so I expect that to improve as the season goes on.

As others said, I believe this will challenge the two and make them ultimately better skaters in the long run.

ETA: IP just pointed out that I can't read. SD scored changed.

re: P/B Definitely voidy.

One thing that I think is definitely worth mentioning is the diversity of the French team trumps every other country. It's remarkable and I think it's somewhat disappointing that Canada and the USA (countries with similar if not stronger diversity population wise) don't see that reflected on the ice.

66.88 at worlds. I think their SD issues last season were due to the Golden Waltz primarily, which is a nutty hard dance. Agree with the rest, though.

I love V/M's SD. I like it so much more as a short dance than as a free (and I liked it then). Not sold on the FD yet, but we'll see. Amazing technique and presentation.

Shibutanis...as I said in the other thread, zzz. Same old, same old. They have no Latin flavor at all.

On another note, here's Savchenko and Szolkowy's SP"

I love it! They are such innovators and so versatile. The programs builds and builds, and they just use the music so well. I love V/T but this blows their SP out of the water, IMO.

S/S's programs this year look so amazing.

Wow!!!!...they ARE amazing...just so different and out of the box....as usual with these two....btw, thanks Ilona&Philipp for posting the trailer for the film...really helped in understanding and appreciating the program more...they just make all the other teams look soo generic...

The SP looks good. The LP looks jaw-dropping. How Steuer isn't more in demand will remain a mystery to me.
I agree, as you know - but maybe he is in demand and there are other reasons he's not choreographing much? AFAIK, he only does pairs programs, and he may not want to choreograph for Aliona and Robin's competitors. Or maybe he'd rather focus on the skaters he coaches and not take on a ton of choreography work as well.

I haven't watched the programs; Eurosport is apparently going to air the Grand Prix this season for the first time since 2008, so I'd rather wait and watch them in competition.

And here's Savchenko/Szolkowy's FS - a real masterpiece to the soundtrack "Pina" (a 3D documentary about german choreographer Pina Bausch) .

Someone may have reported this upthread, but the "secret new direction" LP from Savchenko & Szolkowy is supposed to be

Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy GER
SP "Illuminati" soundtrack (Angels and Demons)
LP "Pina - tanzt, tanzt, sonst sind wir verloren." soundtrack from a German dance movie.

They did exhibition versions recently:

Thank you! Robin and Aliona programs are delightful and fresh one of the many reasons that I love this couple's skating. They always bring something different to the ice in pairs skating.
I just love their skating.

Perephrasing Apple advertising quote "Think different" I can say it about Savchenko/Szolkowy - SKATE DIFFERENT, that's their slogan. Great team!

And how, having seen the full P/B program at Masters, I have to say I liked it a LOT more than I was expecting. The combo lift (which was obscured at that camera angle) looks stunning, and they definitely are a unique team. Very curious now.
