Mao needs victory at NHK Trophy to regain confidence

Indeed. Just ask Joe Paterno.

Righttttt... Seems to me someone is using an example in which they only read the title but not the story. Paterno just got fired by the Board of Trustee of Penn State, not exactly innocent. Even the police are saying even though he fulfilled his legal responsibility, in terms of the moral responsibility, he failed to protect the victims and continued to allow the accused pedophile access to young kids even after someone told him about seeing sex acts performed in the school's shower facilities. Maybe you should take time to actually read and understand before you start to lump Paterno as being an innocent by-stander in the same way you feel Mao's Triple Axel is as solid as a rock, only to have that jump being absent for almost 2 years now and several of her fans coming out with great concerns about the state of her health and her ability to perform that jump at all in the future.

To be fair, I don't think she's saying Paterno was an innocent by-stander, but in reference to that "allegations of abuse is severe" As in, ask Joe, who just got fired for not responding to reports of abuse. Not "Ask Joe, who was clearly innocent in his action." Anyway that's just my take.

Emperor has no clothes, just don't look at yourself in the mirror b/c you may scare yourself to death. :jaw:

Believe it or not, I was actually sincerely AGREEING with your statement in a manner Polonius would be proud of (you know, brevity is the soul of wit, etc, etc).

Also, I've been working out like a fiend these past months so I believe my reflection in the mirror, clothed or not, will only scare the catoptrophobic to death, alas.

Word. I was referring to the fact that Mr. Paterno should've turned his famous attentiveness regarding the lives of his team towards the allegations of abuse concerning Mr. Sandusky since, you know, allegations of abuse are severe and all (as Mr. Paterno has undoubtedly been told over and over again these past days).

And no, wallylutz, I don't think Mao Asada's 3A is solid as a rock. In fact, I can authoritatively say I have never said such a thing. In fact, if you look into my post history, perhaps you will find posts in which I actually suggest she should drop the damn thing and work on her other jumps and skating skills instead.

And, you know, I also object someone else putting words in my mouth too.

ha funny, good for you.

Well then, I take that back and apologize. I must have gotten confused after getting heckled by some overly enthusiastic Mao fans earlier. But now that more people have come out to express their concerns, including some of Mao's die hard fans, it just goes to show I wasn't making up my observations, which were sincere, serious and constructive.

Ughhhhhhhh why does Lucinda whine about a lack of "Lucinda" spins in every single interview she gives??? Come on, the pancake spin is not that special. I wish she would stop, it's getting embarrassing now. Also, can someone quote the part where Mr. Sato abuses her? I skimmed through all 5 parts and I didn't see anything about it.

Mao's triple axel never looked "secure." It never gets a lot of height, and always looks borderline underrotated. I wish Mao would increase her caloric intake and do some weight-lifting. And not with 3 lb pink dumbbells - with real weights. Otherwise, I don't think she'll ever have a triple axel like the men do, or even Midori or Tonya's.

I believe we can conclude that even though she didn't win NHK trophy, Mao has her confidence back

As a Mao fan, I was very happy with how she looked today! The lutz is much improved, she did a clean salchow and a 2A-3T combo. Hopefully she can continue to improve. As far as how thin she is, she didn't look TOO skinny to me, and the fact that she had the energy to have a solid finish to the LP is encouraging. I think she just has a naturally thin frame.

I've always thought the thread title states the reverse. It would be more apt to say that Mao needs confidence for victory at NHK Trophy. She's almost there.

I've wondered this many times, but I think she actually answers it in the interview, or really in the book. She had a crazy father, who told her as a seven or eight years old, that it was her destiny to find something special to do and be the only person in the world who did that. She liked spinning so she chose that, and good for her for what she achieved, but if it happened the way she recounted it, that's emotionally abusive and messed up on her dad's part. To put that kind of pressure on a tiny kid? She must have huge lingering issues over that, and if it's been ingrained in her from that young an age that her spins are what make her special and unique, it must hurt not to have a namesake. That said, she's a big girl now, so she need to learn to deal with all that in therapy, not interviews with skating magazines.

I thought the one she did at 4CC last year was very good quality, actually, and she's landed one or two here and there that were nearly as good. Otherwise, I agree.

Is it me or does Mao look way to thin now? No wonder why she's having troubles with her jumps she's all skin and bones. A little weight would probably help her at this point.

I thought that her lp was glorious! I absolutely love it, and hope that she wins worlds! I don't think she's too thin at all - I think she looks perfect. I don't like the bulky look on the ice - Mao looks like a ballerina. She has always been thin, and I don't think that she looks that much thinner than she did in previous seasons.

It's simply untrue that she doesn't look skinnier than before. The change has happened since the Olympics. Compare this vid of her Oly exhibition with her FS at NHK:

Olympics, see spin at 3:24: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gki8u91dYEg&feature=player_embedded#at=31
NHK, see same spin at 2:02 http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating-in-national/mao-asada-2011-nhk-trophy-free-skate-video

At the Olympics, she was slim but strong. She had thighs (mirabile dictu). Now her legs are just sticks. It's scary. It takes away any pleasure I might have in watching her.

For one thing, the first clip gives more of a close-up shot to the spin which can make the skater appear less thin. What I did notice from those clips is how much faster Mao is skating now compared to 2010. So I wouldn't say she is less powerful now, even if appearances may mislead.

I looked at both clips, and I just don't see a significant difference in her weight. I think it's a matter of personal taste - I think she looks perfect, and her appearance enhances my enjoyment of her skating.
