Jason Brown

... The maternal coaching of Kori is really a key to his success and his stability and I hope he stays with her. If problems ever start happening, I hope they only bring in a specialist to correct problems not separate the pupil and coach.

No need to worry there. Jason once said in his interview that he hopes to end his career with Kori. The way he looked at her when he said it touched me badly. Their closeness, their bonds and her mother's instincts make me want to send my daughter to train with her.

Agree that the loyalty between Kori and Jason is rock-solid in both directions. And they already have been open to getting consultants involved:
I recall an old interview (early this season or maybe last season) in which Jason described working on particular jump (maybe it was the triple axel) with a coach other than Kori. (Sorry, don't remember who the other coach was.) With no prompting from the interviewer(s) -- might have been TSL? -- Jason on his own made sure to explain (I'm paraphrasing), "It's not that Kori is incapable of teaching me the jump. Not at all. She is perfectly capable of doing so."

The video in the first post is up to 3,378,000 views. I hope this sends a message to the ISU, USFSA, Icenetwork, NBC, and other copyright holders who are so quick to take stuff down. They couldn't buy this kind of publicity.

Well I notice that Prince's people hasn't gone chasing after those who posted his SP. ;)

Instead of trying to shut down YouTube, they ought to embrace it. I notice many networks (like the Korean network MBC, who posted Yuna's videos from her Senior B) will post on YouTube. Not only does it provide exposure, but some additional revenue as well.

This was a nice article, but I can't resist pointing this out:

Peal said the 2014 Olympics appeared a long shot, particularly since Brown only recently added a triple axle jump to his program and has not incorporated a quadruple axle, as have some of his competitors. “But his skating skills, his musicality and techniques are at so much higher a standard that even without the quadruple jump, he is well above his competitors,” Peal said.

Hm...skating has advanced much quickly than I imagined! ;)

Right, he has always maintained that Kori was technically knowledgeable enough to take him to the top and always brought in specialists to improve his technique.

It's just as a fan I worry. There have been so many great skater-coach relationships that looked so solid but turned sour and bitter. Obviously, I hope Jason and Kori will last. I think Jason's loving coach and family are why he can go out there and compete so confidently. He knows he can mess up and still be loved. They keep him grounded. He has a realistic assessment of his abilities and weaknesses, unlike certain skaters who frequently get ridiculed on these forums as soon as they announce they're going for the gold even if they often splat and/or are in 8th place.

Brian Boitano and Linda Leaver also had a strong coach-pupil relationship that lasted throughout his career. She started coaching Brian since he was a child, the same as Jason and Kori. When Brian wasn't doing so well, people started pressuring him to change to a "real" coach. He refused and Linda did take him to the gold. I think skaters need love first and foremost and then specialists can come in and help them improve.

Here's the thing, the "real coach" calls for Jason came real early in his career. Kori Ade talks about it in this interview: http://www.manleywoman.com/episode-45-2011-us-nationals/

(emphasis is mine)

And several times in my coaching journey with him, judges or officials have said, you know, it’s really in his best interests for you to pass him along to somebody. Because I wasn’t a well-known coach, I was a nobody. And I just am really grateful to the Brown family for trusting in me, and believing in me. My favorite story that I tell other coaches is that I had another skater that started with me when she was a beginner, and when she got to the double axel, her mother — even though she made final rounds at juvenile and was progressing really well — sat me down and said, you know, we think you’re wonderful, but we know you’ve never taught a double axel before, and we don’t want our child to be the guinea pig. And I remember those words so vividly. It was a pivotal moment for me, because it was at that moment that I said, I need to go learn, because I will never have this conversation again. Ever.

And I think that’s what forced me to seek out apprenticeships and to find people that I knew I trusted to guide me. And there have been a lot of people along the way who have said, you can’t do it, or, you don’t know what you’re talking about. And I think as a coach that hasn’t proven themselves, I’ll be up against that for the next ten years, and I’ve been up against it for the last ten years, but if it’s your passion, which it has become for me, you just keep your head up, and you keep showing up every day, and you’re consistent with what you do, and you find people that know a little bit better, and you just learn. And I have to say, I’m probably the biggest nerd there is, because I spent five years at Lake Arrowhead with a video camera and notes, sitting on the side of those elite sessions, watching those elite coaches teaching, and taking notes, and then going with my video camera and filming the tracings on the ice and figuring it out. I’ve probably spent $100,000 figuring out how to be a better coach. To me, that’s my master’s degree, and I think that’s what Jason has done for me, to force me to be the best coach I can be, and I thank him for that. Because if I didn’t have a talent like that, that I had to stay one step ahead of — that was the bulk of my letter. Congratulations on getting here, I’m so proud of you, thank you for letting me be on this journey with you, and it’s amazing that you have pushed me to this level. That’s cool that you asked me that question, I’ll let you read the letter [laughs].

This is the interview that basically made me absolutely adore Kori and I pretty much told her as much when I met her. I love a good story about someone going beyond the possible and she is a great example of that.

When I have a bad day at work (in a career I worked so hard to build), I seriously think of this interview. I think to myself. "I can work through this, just like Kori did!" So yes, that is why I'm a Kori fan girl.

Also I hear that interview as often as I watch Jason's YouTube videos. Props, Allison Manley! :)

Also I stumbled upon this tweet she posted a few weeks ago and I couldn't believe it...

Wow, what a woman. I love them. I hope they stay that way no matter how famous they become.

If you have a free evening (or you're totally procrastinating on something), it's worth watching all of Jason's Riverdance performances back-to-back in order:

Glacier Falls (Aug. 2013)
Nebelhorn (Sept. 2013)
Skate America (Oct. 2013)
Trophee Eric Bompard (Nov.2013)
Nationals!! (Jan. 2014)

Tonight was the first time I watched the Skate America performance since the event back in October. It was sort of painful to watch -- he looked so tense, so nervous! He really had to fight for everything. But in hindsight, the experience at Skate America was clearly beneficial and a building block for his journey to the Olympics.

It's sort of fun to see how the choreography has changed over time. He didn't add the 2A from the hydroblade until Skate America. I sort of miss the brackets into the 3A combo, but can see why he opted for simpler MITF.

It's fun to see the footwork sequence evolve also. At his first few competitions, he looked so exhausted and focused on just getting through it (though he maintained some of his performance and charisma) and then it was fun to see him perform it FULL BLAST at Nationals complete with his infectious smile and personality.

I wish karne was able to keep his Broodmoor performance up on YouTube, but alas that did not happen...it was so raw back then!

I think he's a super dark horse and it would take major mistakes from the top guys for him to get there. Based on his scoring this season and his competition, I would say best case scenario is that he sneaks into the final group for the FS.

I would say it's nearly impossible that he will beat:
Patrick Chan
Yuzuru Hanyu

He's unlikely to beat (but could if they make mistakes):
Daisuke Takahashi
Javier Fernandez
Tatsuki Machida

He could beat:
Jeremy Abbott
Denis Ten
Tomas Verner
Kevin Reynolds
Peter Liebers

He's already beaten the following:
Michael Brezina
Han Yan
Florent Amodio
Alexander Majorov

I have no **** clue if he can beat:
Evgeni Plushenko

Really appreciate you breaking down Jason's chances against the top men, Mrs. P! Your comment about Plushenko made me laugh. I feel like we could say that about him and all of the main competitors, really!

P.S. Thank you for informative, insightful, and realistic posts here and throughout the forums. They are a pleasure to read. :)

Way off topic:
They are discounted at the moment at my local Whole Foods.

(Mods, pls forgive if this post is a faux pas.)

Sadly, I do not have a "Whole Paycheck" in my town. :P However, I found a couple of stores that DO sell them, so I'm going to head there tonight and get peanut butter cups (and get a new Seahawks T-Shirt for the SUPERBOWLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

TNT when they were kids! Good luck at the 2014 Olympics @jasonbskates ! So excited for you!

Do you guys recognize any of the other kids?

OT. Tried those dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Sold.So delicious and not too sweet, which is the reason I don't eat Resse's peanut butter cup.

I managed to hold myself to just eating one of the two servings in the package, though I was so tempted to eat the other one too. I managed to hold firm to my willpower and gave the other one to Mr. P, who also liked it!

Going to have to go back to the store and buy a few more. :)

Mrs. P, It is an Olympic year. Throw caution to the wind and indulge in any guilty pleasure you wish as often as you wish. lol

Peanut butter cups?

And you wonder why I think Americans are a bit loopy. :p

I remember the people clamouring for Jason to get a new coach while he was struggling with the triple Axel. I am very anti-coach-hopping unless circumstances absolutely require it (like Joshua escaping the clutches of Tom Z), so I was very pleased when they stuck together. In fact, I remember reading opinions that Jason absolutely would never land the triple Axel if he stayed with Kori - and Dave Lease went so far as to proclaim that Jason would never land it no matter what he tried. Heh. Fools.

As a Yuna uber, it is my sad duty to shake you back to reality. ;)

-Yuna's most viewed videos were taken down long, long ago, and continue to be taken down on a regular basis (I won't go into the sordid details of how or why). Suffice it to say that on a fair comparison, Yuna's view count is impossible to surpass anytime soon.

-We can get a good sense of the difference in magnitude even here on this forum. When Yuna is in competition, her threads will routinely hit 60-70,000 views in a matter of days. As you can see, Jason's still hasn't passed 15,000.

Jason has got a lot of potential, but he's still got a ways to go before his uberdom can bear comparison with that of Yuna, or Michelle at her peak. :)

Meanwhile, the article by the black male figure skating fan says Jason is sending a hand-written note to everyone he can track down who threw stuffies or flowers at him in Boston. It's a good thing the Smucker's strawberries didn't have labels :)

Meanwhile, his FS vid has 3,355,484 hits.

Haha, it's no skin off my back.

Really the goal I'm aiming for Jason is to beat Starr Andrews' viral "Whip My Hair" video. (15 M views). That's definitely an obtainable goal.

Very laudable. (Although I never got the appeal of that video)

The appeal is literal. A cute girl whipping her awesome hair back and forth. :)

And how fun is it that she became a vial sensation before winning her first Nationals medal? (Pewter in juvenille this year!)
