The Judging Controversy Thread

The only top contender to fall out of contention with mistakes was Mao and to a lesser extent Julia. Two way better skaters gave 2 way better performances with much stronger jumps, stronger footwork (despite the bogus level 4 footwork grades), stronger basic skating, and much superior artistry, and her pre arranged win still happened and by a healthy margin too. Thread fail, next.

I do agree on her retiring though. Once she leaves her Russian bubble and finds the vitriol around her win she will never want to compete outside Russia again.

Responding to Blacswaspotato, post 387:

Welll, here is Adelina's horoscope (born July 1). What can I say?

People born on July 1 are extraordinary individuals who spend their entire lives striving for perfection. They have great emotional fragility, yet their spirit is actually strong. Even though they are good-hearted and generous, these people seem to draw complications and controversy into their midst.

I think people should give the conspiracy theories a rest. We should know by now when it comes to the Olympics fate always come into play. There were just too many coincidences....

Mao bombed her short
The competition was in Russia
A lot of the top competitors fell out of contention with mistakes
And the biggest one... this girl had the performances of her life in the right place at the right time... after having a history of inconsistency.

It was simply meant to be..... just like Sarah was meant to be, just like Tara was was meant to be, just like Arakawa was meant to be.. Everyone should be used to this at the Olympics. Nothing trumps fate. These things are ordained by something higher. Expect no different in the next Olympics. She will more than likely retire now as there is no way the stars will align like that for her again.
And perhaps for once (in a blue moon) fans wanted to see excellence prevail? Fair and square? Would that be too much to ask?

I don't think there are going to be that many people booing her because they disliked the judging. And if that's the case we should be criticizing those people for attacking the wrong people. It's not her fault they gave her the marks. Sheesh.

Precisely! I posted this elsewhere but find it true: I feel like if anyone does feel that way about her, then it's more telling of their character and flaws than her's.... ;)

Yes, this whole event was a big scandal. The way the judges favorited Russians during this whole competition was ridiculous. Based on the team event, I knew it all would end up like this. Sad.

I agree. Not only ladies skate, the whole figure skating event in this Olympics was a joke.

I didnt neccessarily imply booing (lukewarm reception perhaps) but I could see her receiving the Chait & Shaknovsky treatement if she continues. I doubt she will though, so we probably wont find out.

Combined with an empty arena except for the Russian fanatic crowds, it was a mediocre Olympic experience at best. I would be furious as a skater in any of the events over the past two weeks. To have worked so hard all your life for this moment and to have it play out the way it did, such a shame.

Women's figure skating results?
This brought complete dishonor to the Olympic figure skating.
If somebody wins gold medal just because of her nationality, why bother other athletes to join the Olympic. Need to show some respect to the skaters who have worked so hard for many many years.

Exactly. They should have just given Sotnikova, Voloszhar & Trankov, the Russian Team, Davis & White, Plushenko all golds before the Figure Skating even began as their wins were already secured and bought. Plushenko WDing wouldnt cost him an additional gold medal like it did in real time either, poor guy. Just have the rest compete for the silver and bronze medals, and save those poor skaters the trouble for a process they never had to go through.

I do not see how people are saying Kostner deserved to win.. Her program was awful! Telegraphed jumps, a lot of them landed with poor quality. She was just skating from element to element the first 3 minutes. It was like one of those Frankenstein programs Lori was giving Michelle at the end of her career.

Mainstream media started to pick up the story. It's not going to change the medalists but at least we can work to make some changes, where judging is more transparent, accountable, and less biased in the future if more people get to hear. This Russia (or any other country) + 20 v. everyone else cannot be repeated if the sport is to survive.
