The Judging Controversy Thread

I would rather they focus on getting the Worlds judging correct. If they carry the inflated Olympics reputation over like they often do it pretty much guarantees Lipnitskaya and Sotnikova gold and silver regardless of what everyone else do.

I doubt Yuna Kim would be happy getting a gold medal only after a huge controversy anyways.

I completely agree. Yes I want Yulia to win! But I think she can do it fair and square. No BS!!

I am surprised at the overwhelming criticism of the ladies judging. We all know it is subjective but the new system is a huge improvement over the old. Nobody is penalized if if they have to skate early. A skater does not have to be in the top three to win and there is actual evidence showing how the scores are derived. I think if the writers and commentators and some people on the forum would try to understand how the system works there would be less anger. For example Yuna did one less triple than Adelina. That is a lot of points and could have been the difference between first and second. It also seems some people are more angry at Russia than the judging.

Mao Asada would like to have a word with you. As would Yuna Kim for her short program.

It seems that you're the one who doesn't comprehend how the system works. As it's been repeated again and again and again, Adelina doesn't win by having one more jump than Yuna (that doesn't explain how she beat Mao who had more jumps). What people are questioning are: Adelina's "highest ever" PCS scores (18 pt increase), lack of flutz calls, Yuna's deflated GOE and PCS scores, Kostner's PCS scores, and Julia's PCS scores.

If sports commentators and both current and previous Olympic skaters (who are more knowledgeable than any of us on the system) are expressing that they are shocked and cannot make sense of the judging, then the criticism of ladies judging is merited.

No. We are angry with the JUDGING!!!

Adelina's score went up 149.95 only 0.11 behind Kim's world record with a step out and one less element, not to mention she's not the same quality skater on components. Anyone who ever follows figure skating could see 149.95 and know that's not a real score. Some of you have spent your whole life saying "oh it's ok for home ice, oh it's ok for olympic inflation, etc." All some of you do is make excuses for the scoring and allow political decisions to decide so-called "sport" contests. It's disgusting.

Anyone who considers skating an athletic sport could see 149.95 and immediately know that had no connection to reality whatsoever.

I'd like to see Yulia come back from this. Honestly, I like this girl a lot but I am pretty glad she flopped here so she didn't get dragged through the mud with this controversy. Even though she was overscored, at least she came out of this Olympics as the new sweetheart of figure skating instead of winning a scandal-ridden gold medal.

I agree. pangtongfan is going on a spree of Sotnikova hate, with posts left-right-and-centre, and new threads galore. He's making sky_fly look like she actually exercises restraint when it comes to hating Canadians or praising Gracie Gold.

New target for PTF.
Fun to watch fly on the receiving end.

Well, Worlds are being held in Japan and Mao is skating, so I don't think the Russians are going to get handed that gold medal.

I posted something similar on twitter. Now I have a different theory all together. Depending on how bad this gets, and I think that a very strong message will be sent to Adelina to not compete at World's and effectively retire ala Tara and Hughes. There's not much else for her to accomplish having had the biggest victory in her career. OGM, home ice, first Russian woman to win OGM, living up to being the "face" of Sochi Olympics after having it temporarily taken away by her main rival Yulia, beating a legend by 5 points, having 2 skates of her life. If I was advising her, I would say sit out the rest of the season. As much as I love World's, it is in a month? She'll be wined and dined by every Russian plutocrat for the rest of her life. Without having to suffer at the hands of figure skating judges.

What's going to happen to Adelina is the same thing that happened to Julia when she won COR with all of those inflated scores...she dropped right back down into her normal range at the GPF. That's what will happen to Adelina. Her PCS will adjust according (SP: from 35 down to 32-ish, FS: from 74 probably down to 64). Because of the Olympic title, if she delivers, she might see a slight boost but it won't be anywhere near what the scores were here nor should they be.

Adelina is 17 and retiring at this point would be a waste. She's only been to worlds once, she clearly has a lot more she can improve upon, and most importantly she wants to continue to compete. Telling her to hang it up is basically telling her you will never be able to accomplish anything ever again. With all of the top veterans exiting, Adelina is in a prime position to take over one of those top spots...she was in that position prior to this surprise win. Her main competition after this season will be Julia and Gracie until someone new comes along. When she's on she beats Julia and (in fair scoring) she can go toe-to-toe with Gracie. She should stay in and continue to compete.

I'd be really disappointed if she decided to retire.

I checked her fan page and she is getting tons of support. A Jewish foundation named a star "girl in red coat" and dedicated it to her. She seemed upbeat in the Gala warmup too. Most things happen for a reason I believe.

Plus she won a gold medal!!

Why did the number of signatures needed for that petition keep going up as people were signing it? Anybody know?

I don't know. But I saw that a Korean friend of mine shared it on facebook and went ahead and signed myself. I am sure they want to have a significant number of people signing the petition to show strong support.

It would be a good place to launch a virus or malware. I'd be careful. Can't it be done by mail?

I signed it too. I have never been a huge Yuna fan (I always preferred Mao), AND I’m Russian - but last night was truly an injustice.
When I saw Kim’s long, I knew I was watching an Olympic champion. The presentation, the choreography, the arms - I mean, there was NO question in my mind.

So, I guess I became a fan of hers truly last night.

Today, I’m wondering about how insensitive and stupid the official response sounds from Cinquanta. God, he’s out of touch.
Also, the reports of Olga Baranova (tech panel, Finland) hugging people from the Russian federation?

The circumstantial evidence is certainly there, but because of anonymous judging and weird leadership, we’ll probably never know the truth...

Does anyone have any bio on Baranova, btw? As I said on another thread, that’s a Russian name.

Bottom line - the sport needs to reinvent itself. How can it get a new President? Why is he in power so long?
