Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

Thank you! That is why I like this thread! We helped each other out! It is so wonderful to see that people speaking different languages from different countries love Yuzuru the same:love:

Back to the topic Denis and Maxim discussed, it is nice to see how these young skaters learn and inspire each other. They may want to form a quad lover's group LOL, though I hope they don't jump too much and be gentle to their knees...

I can imagine what is going on in cricket club in Canada ... Never ending quad battles between Yuzu and Javier  ?

From next season propably Nam will join their battles on quads ... ;)

edit
It's incorrect to call it "hieroglyphs" in the first place, isn't it? :slink:

yes, it's called Kanji in Japanese, but it's also called Hanzi in Chinese and Hanja in Korean. Maybe you're looking for characters instead of hieroglyphs - that's what people usually call it (I'm Chinese heh).

Yes, I speak Russian.
1. Denis suggests Maxim try it the way Yuzuru does it - with a hop. 2. (Max) Yuzuru has done it the both ways. I'm going to try it again tomorrow. 3. (Denis) No, he hasn't. Otherwise he fails(literally - he flies over the boards). You should try it(the hop). It's easier.

thank you for the translation!!
I watched the video Denis posted like a million times - Denis does it without, Yuzu does it with. Denis' looks much nicer  and Kovtun's quads.... not very nice looking :slink:

Very nice comment, Meoima. (You know that I disagree with you on the costume. ha. ha.) If I have learned one thing from watching Yuzuru over the last several years, it is that he defies not just his critics but sometimes even his fans, and so far has proved himself the better for it every time. Whatever he does, he does it in his own way in a big way, but he is always true to himself and therefore to us.

Well, I think he worries much about criticism. Fans have always been complaining about his posture, his expression, asking for Romeo and Juliet #1 for his EX and so on. And he's always been correcting his mistakes and flaws. He's improved his posture and movements after many fans complained about that, then he improved expression, he goes on saying how he will improve his expression even further on and how badly he wants to put his emotions into future program (apparently keeping in mind the first Romeo program). He even said he would take up ballet lessons because he knows he has a bad posture in the second Romeo program (I think he got it from complainers). He does listen to critics and his fans, he does take it into consideration and try to improve his skills based on such negative comments. I think so.

I'm glad I finally could be of any use here and do something in return for all the information posted in this thread.

In Russian we use the same term(hieroglyphs) for the Chinese and ancient Egyptian characters, that's why I got confused. Thank you!

I must say that while denis 4t-3a is smoother and cleaner I wouldn't say it looks nicer... IMO it seems like a perfect and souless interpretation of some classic piece, while yuzuru's is much more wild, rough and free, and IMO much more interesting

Well I don't know if he listens to fans. In my opinion, some wishes like "please do that EX again", he might listen to fans and tried his best to realize then. But about posture and expression and anything related to the skating skills, he will wisely listen to his coaches, choreographers, elder and peer skaters's opinion. In one word, listen to professionals, not fans who actually know very little about real skating skills. I don't think it is good to exaggerate the impact of "fans".

But you know there are fans that are very "pro" about figure skating like some people here at GS, so he maybe also takes into consideration what these kind of fans say :)

interesting analogy! maybe I saw Denis' as nicer because I noticed that when Yuzu lands he kind of goes forward a little bit, while Denis' landing looks much smoother, which I think does have something to do with their technique and individual style of skating.

I agree with you that there are a lot of experts here. Maybe some of them are actually pros or ex-pros. But you see, just here, a moment ago we are arguing about whose 4T+3A looks nicer, and whose choreography suits him better. And we all think we have the correct answers, although maybe none of us are pros. Do you think it is a wise way to spend time reading through all these and much more others? It is a mission impossible! No athletes and their teams will do that. I would say whatever true problem people here can see, his team can see. And they may see earlier, further and deeper, and have a plan for it. If they are really worrying about criticism, it is more likely from some professional skating magazines which may reflect opinions from the judges, or TV sports commentators who were real ex-pros. They are athletes, not movie stars or pop singers who may need to worry about fan's criticism (and I guess great artists never worry about fan's criticism). All I want to say is please don't over-estimate the fandom thing. Fans exchange thoughts and resources for fun. Calm down and enjoy :)

Well I can agree. For me at Worlds he brought R&J 2 to life.

3:35 moment after loop, they changed this part for the worlds, I don't know why but I become in love with that part :biggrin: so smoooth for me

Re Yuzuru's R & J 2 skate at Worlds, I love that fist pump at 4:18 after landing his final jump (triple lutz), pretty sure that's not part of David Wilson's choreography.

Too bad Yuzuru's back was to the camera so we could not see his facial expression when he did that fist pump. His body language said it all however: he got what he wanted, a clean skate of a devilishly difficult program. Great moment for him, and us his fans as well.

Oh my god. The Yuzuru fan page on VK is starting a fanfic competition. Please Russian fans, please don't write fanfics shipping Yuzuru with other figure skaters  That's all I ask (since a certain skater follows that page, I don't want her to see fanfics revolving her and Yuzuru :slink:)

Yep his team have the last word and they know better what he needs, I agree. Anyways that'a why I wrote "maybe", I was just considering the possibility ;)

Hmm. Just like Brian Orser suggested to Hanyu that for the Olympics, he might consider the "easier" and more "reliable" option... two 4T's, instead of 4T and 4S? According to Orser, Hanyu "was having none of that"!

Although the layout would surely have been easier for him (his 4T is sooo good, and sooo reliable)... He was absolutely determined to continue with the 4S. Orser could not persuade him.

Because apparently to him - taking it out would be a step backwards. Seems he has big plans, and regarded removal of the 4S as possibly setting back his plans, by a whole extra season. And he thought sticking to the plan was more important, than taking the "easy" win - even when the Olympic gold was at stake!

So, after hearing that story recently - I'm not sure anymore, how much influence Orser has (or anyone), when Hanyu is determined...!

His age allows him to take such risk,as he has one more olympic season ahead, Chan or Takahashi could never allow themselves risk the Olympic gold medal like that. Besides if he changes 4S to 4T, he needs to take out one of his combinations with axel and make instead 4T+3T or 4T+2T and instead of 3Lz make 2A in the end, which results in the base value of jumps 71,42 against 74,72 with 4S. So with sticking to 4S he can actualy afford one fall as there is also exaggerated components cushion for him and still win. After these calculations I completely understand Yuzuru - it seems like it makes much more sense to play safe with 4T, but indeed with 4S he doesn't loose much even with the fall (guess that' the lack of judging system), but the challenge is higher and much more adrenalin, which much more coincides with Olympic spirit:)

Don't tell me it's Yulia. no no no fan fiction, what the hell are they thinking!

Now, the meaning of each character:

羽 = feather. 生 = born => Since his surname has the character of feather in it, his fans usually draw him a pair of wings. They want to express the idea he is like a bird flying on the ice or something like that, I guess.

結 = to connect, to tie, to knot. 弦 = the bowstring => The 1st name is named by his father, who happens to be a teacher, so I can guess the name has hidden meaning.
I guess, his father wanted him to have a strong and dignified attitude towards difficulties of life (like a bow with stretched string holding a large amount of energy), hence the name.:)

結 is like "tie" instead of "form". 弦 is bowstring. I think you can take the first character as a verb not a none. So the name means "tie the bowstring to a bow", and the string is going to be beautifully straightened and filled with powerful force, while at the same time it can not be over-intensive to work correctly. This image contains a very oriental and very Japanese aesthetics and philosophy. He said himself in an interview that his father gave him this name and wanted him to be such a person who lives a life simple, but dignified, powerful and graceful. ”弓の弦を結ぶように凛とした生き方をして欲しい” from wiki

I've always thought the meanings of his name fit him really well. When he jumps it's like he's flying with wings in the air. The bowstring symbolism gives off an image of powerful and unyielding resilience, much like his incredible flexibility and resolute determination.

It's actually a perfect name for a figure skater... It's like he was destined to become one at birth or something, haha.

It's funny when you see what some fans can think about, but shipping people is wrong, especially when those people see the stories. I'm so happy Yuzu doesn't spend his time on social networks...fans are shipping him with anyone from Mao to Javi..:rolleye:
