Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

@Esopian, re your query about any good coming out from Yuzuru competing against his idol, I think so. Yuzuru did acquit himself pretty well in their one and only face-off (though in team competition). He will certainly be motivated to top his idol.

For Evgeni Plushenko though, I wonder how feels facing his "annointed" one. Like Yuzuru, I have no doubt about his competitive fire if and when they ever get to compete against each other.

It was reported in the news that 4 skaters from Tohoku high scool are going to ride on the truck with Yuzuru, probably no kids. But we'll see, the parade is going to start almost in 2 hours :yay: (only local people can watch it live, but we'll have a lot of news clips for sure

This was discussed pages ago, but at the official meeting with the Prime Minister and all the top Japanese atheltes, Hanyu seemed exceptionally polite (especially with the Paralympians). When other people talked to them, they seemed to kind of (and literally) look down on them; I commend Yuzu for kneeling next to the paralympians to take a picture.

He erased that hint of awkwardness in the atmosphere and reversed it so that both sides would feel comfortable.

Although the full length video took ages to load and watch (side note: why did the video keep on lagging?), it was an interesting watch because of how it filmed the PM talking to the attendees and most of all Hanyu's lack of nervousness/shyness. He hugged the PM after Mao's timidness about that suggestion and seemed to have a good time. Again, I really admire how mature he is for his age. :clap:

even so, his 3f has never been great - numerous edge calls, other falls (Skate America 2012 comes to mind...), him saying that he didn't like it (there's a reason he never talks about the quad flip!! he said that even if he could do it, he wouldn't, simply because he dislikes the flip jump). And the quad in the Worlds short... I guess I was half expecting him to headcase, there was so much pressure on him to do well with his iconic PW.

I'll be so happy the day he has a clean competition!!

Ok. So as it appears there will be no livestreaming (as I hoped) like his FCCJ press conference, will have to rely as usual on the reliable and fast "Yuzuru Bulletin" on this thread to update me on Yuzuru's parade.

@jimeonji: It's good we are upgrading expectations as to Yuzuru. Before Worlds, people in this thread were hoping (and praying) for him to finally skate a clean LP (and land that 4 salchow), now we want him to have two clean programs in a competition. He can do it. I think he's getting stronger physically and mentally all the time.

Little surprised but it did happened.

Friday afternoon, Japan Olympics Committee (JOC) commentated the well-performed players in 2013-2014 season. The chief in committee, Seiko Hashimoto, had a surprised talk while presenting award to Yuzu.

She asked Yuzu to let them seeing his play with peace mind in two-day competition in PyeongChang 2018 Olympics. (As Yuzu was great in SP, but two falls in FP in Sochi)

Yuzu was instantly laughing when he heard first few words. (Just as he saw the Pooh in FCCJ press conference) And we can see other skaters behind him with unbelievable expression. Machida even Leaned to see more.

Wow, crazy lady never stop! And we will see how Yuzu reacts his "new challenge" everyday. :laugh:

ps. Ms. Hashimoto is the one who suggested Prime Minister Abe to hug with Mao yesterday.

Both Yagudin and Plushenko started out just like Yuzuru, if you know what I mean. Yagudin and Plushenko both got the bronze at their 1st WC. And even though they are legends, their performance at their 1st worlds were nowhere near the level of Yuzuru's LP in WC 2012. Both of them choked 2 or 3 times there. :biggrin:

And before their 20 years old mark, both Yagudin and Plushenko fell quite often. Plushenko fell on his quad at SP at Salt Lake City 2002 which cost him the gold. It's so obviously that maturity comes with consistency, don't worry. If you follow Yagudin and Plushenko's career in those years you will know. No one knows how to skate so well before millions eyes with immense pressure right from the beginning.

Both Yagudin and Plushenko paid a lot for their consistency, and Yuzuru is no exception. The fact that he performed so well in the LP at worlds is a promising sign. I believe he will be more consistent from now on, now that his confidence received a boost after Sochi and Worlds.

So heartwarming to see all those people come out for Yuzuru! It also makes a statement on the power of sport and of athletes, how they can help unify and inspire as I think what Yuzuru and his Olympic gold medal did for his beloved hometown. That kind of psychological boost is priceless.

My reaction also as to Tomas. Love his Worlds SP, but seeing him in his gold underpants was not my favorite moment in the Worlds gala.
