Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

Thanks for the video! I'm looking forward to Ryuju Hino (and Keiji Tanaka) to come up to seniors next year. I hope he can become Yuzuru's rival again. He looked so confident back then...

I used to think that, after retiring of Takahashi and Oda, the next 3 spots of men in Team Japan would be Kozuka, Machida and, Mura. Then, one after the next would be Hanyu, Ryuju Hino and Keiji Tanaka.

Yuzuru has improved so fast beyond my expectation, leaving everyone behind

Honestly speaking, it was Ryuju who attracted my eyes first. His spin was superb for his age. And I remember Yuzuru's jumps were not stable. But after they proceeded to Junior, Yuzuru did not lose to other Japanese junior skaters. It seemed like his talent suddenly flourished.

On the other hand, Tatsuki Machida was not so successful in the Junior Worlds despite my expectation. But, as you know, he is the silver medalist of the Worlds now. This convinced me that there is surely a timing for each skater to blossom out. Ryuju is now in some kind of slump, I'm afraid. But I'm sure he will be Yuzuru's rival again soon, together with Keiji. I would like to see these attractive young skaters leading Team Japan

This article came up on Yahoo news today. It's from a gossip magazine so I won't post it on the other thread, but the content is about food and is harmless even if it's a lie so I will translate it a little bit.
http://zasshi.news.yahoo.co.jp/article?a=20140427-00000000-pseven-spo

Hanyu faced some problems with meals when he moved to Canada because he did not like meals served in North America such as big steaks and deer meat.

"With a small appetite, Hanyu was scared off by the big meals that were served in front of him, like large amounts of meat and big plate full of food. He felt as though he were 'being attacked by meat'. He doesn't like meals with strong flavors either so his appetite became smaller and smaller. His mother tried to reproduce meals she made in Japan by going to Korean supermarkets but failed." (quoted by a Figure Skating anonymous)

His immunity went down and he started to miss practices due to sickness. His physical and muscular strengths deteriorated and he injured his knee right before the WC in March 2013.

His mother decided to improve his diet and consulted a dietitian. She then realized that Hanyu's tendencies when eating meals.

"Hanyu gets full after 5 minutes of eating and does not finish his meal, but he starts eating again after 20 minutes saying he's hungry again." (quoted by the same anonymous)

It wasn't that he had a small appetite. "His stomach takes time to start moving so it took time for him to develop an appetite after starting a meal." (quoted by the same anonymous)

Then the article goes on about how his mother, under the instructions of a dietitian is making him drink soup before meals and making use of glutamic acid to increase his appetite. She tries to lessen his burden of eating visually by serving his rice in onigiri style rather than serving them in a rice bowl. Hanyu likes "nabe" (hot pot?) meals so she makes them often and since the ingredients are easy to buy anywhere, he usually eats nabe when he travels, etc.

thank you so much Mikaboo for taking time to translate this article. Maybe it's not accurate 100% but obviously Yuzu's mother has taken care of him so well. She rarely shows herself in front of camera, however we still can tell how important she is in Yuzu's skating and daily life. Behind a successful man there is always the presence of a woman :D

The article about Yuzuru's diet matter is almost correct.

Ajinomoto, Japanese food giant, has been a supporting company for the Victory Project for Olympics.

It was a dietitian of Ajinomoto who noticed Yuzuru's stomach starts moving slow and advised Yuzuru's mother about how to improve his appetite. I heard that he was with the team during the Olympic games. Their cooperation seemed working well, and now he can eat more than before. Apparently Yuzuru looks healthier than the year before.

Last summer, Ajinomoto had news releases stated how they supported Olympics Team Japan with a “Victory Project”. Of course, Yuzu was one of the players supported. (Ajinomoto is a sponsor of JOC)

One of members form Ajinomoto nutrition team is Hidefumi Kurihara. He particularly took care of Yuzu. (Now we can see him along with Yuzu in Worlds.)

He discussed with Yuzu to find out the root causes of diet issue. They found the problem is his gastrointestinal motility slower than ordinal people. For accelerating the motility, soup method could be fine to him. Then, Kurihara designed many soup recipes to Yuzu’s mother in order to improve his stamina.

Ajinomoto also produced a kind of condensed soup that is easy to make by microwave. So players can make soup with any kind of materials (eg vegetables or meat) they prefer. Especially when they attend the competitions overseas, the soup might reduce the diet unaccustomed problem.

The other important nutrient Ajinomoto offered is “Amino acid” supplement. We can see Yuzu had it after practice or tournament.

(Takahashi took a CM for the product)

Obviously, Yuzu’s success really combined and integrated with unbelievable support resources. An Olympics champion never is just itself.

Indeed. If there was acceptance speech for the champions in figure skating then the appreciation lists wouldn't be shorter than the ones in Oscar or Grammy.

Many thanks for the information. He really looked healthier the past season .

Thanks for the links! I was looking for a picture of them together earlier but couldn't find any.
I have a soft spot for Ryuju ever since I heard he cheered Yuzuru up when he was feeling down after a tournament some time ago. I really hope these 3 can represent Japan in the future. I think Machida did an excellent job in demonstrating that it's possible to blossom in the late senior years.

Thanks to everyone who provided sources for the "gossip" article. I found some old newspaper articles underneath the article that I translated so I think today's article was just a patchwork of information taken from here and there.

Behind a successful man there is always the presence of a woman :D

So true!

Just for informative reason. It seem that Yuzuru instestinal problems is a medical condition called Gastroparesis http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gastroparesis/

What are the symptoms of gastroparesis?
The most common symptoms of gastroparesis are nausea, a feeling of fullness after eating only a small amount of food, and vomiting undigested food—sometimes several hours after a meal. Other symptoms of gastroparesis include
gastroesophageal reflux (GER), also called acid reflux or acid regurgitation—a condition in which stomach contents flow back up into the esophagus, the organ that connects the mouth to the stomach
pain in the stomach area
abdominal bloating
lack of appetite
Symptoms may be aggravated by eating greasy or rich foods, large quantities of foods with fiber—such as raw fruits and vegetables—or drinking beverages high in fat or carbonation. Symptoms may be mild or severe, and they can occur frequently in some people and less often in others. The symptoms of gastroparesis may also vary in intensity over time in the same individual. Sometimes gastroparesis is difficult to diagnose because people experience a range of symptoms similar to those of other diseases.

So that´s why big meals from Canada only made him sick

Maria Victoria, thank you again for sharing my videos :) I loved working on the one that included the "best comments" form the Worlds and it's really great to know that other people enjoyed it, too.

I have to say I was really impressed watching all the great videos and photos you nice people shared from Yuzu's parade. Seeing such an insane number of people gathered together to celebrate a local son who made it big is impressive by itself. But knowing that all that immense crowd, including the celebrated hero himself, went through such an unspeakable tragic and traumatic experience just three years ago and seeing them now, victorious and overjoyed... it's just mindblowing, it gives me chills. Sorry if I sound overdramatic, but it pretty much made me realise that the human spirit is a hard thing to break, no matter the circumnstances :) I can't even begin to imagine what that parade meant to all of them and most of all to Yuzuru. He's so so young and he has already experienced so many extraordinary things (and sadly, not always the good kind of 'extraordinary').

I dunno if Yuzu has a diet problem or not, but the details on that gossip article are really implausible. We don't run around eating deer meat all the time in Canada (WTH), and it's extremely easy to find Japanese food (or the ingredients to cook Japanese food) unless you're living up in the territories or something.

Anyways, can I ask Japanese fellows one more question?

Is there any news or interviews that mentioned his Biellmann spin in Japanese?

I hope that Yuzuru will stop doing Biellmann. Frankly that spin is not good for your back. Look at Plushy. He had to stop doing Biellmann when he was 22 but it might be a little bit too late for him. Plushy had dozen of surgeries, not only because of Biellmann but I bet that position affected his back badly.

Yuzuru is still 19, he should stop that Biellmann spin next season. I hope he stays healthy, and he can archive level 4 on spin without that Biellmann.

I wouldn´t worry that much. Lot´s of ballet dancers keep being flexible all their lifes. And you can compare Yuzuru to Plushenko, different bodies, we don´t know what exactly causes Plushy´s back wounds.

Orser and his team seem to be doing a great job watching his health and Yuzuru himself is aware that his body is changing so he will stop when he and his team thinks is time to do so. :)

Lilahozi a friend of mine made that coment to me just last week.

Lol it's a gossip article what do you expect. They probably made up some details to make the article more interesting.
