I say I understand why skaters have to attend as many ice shows as possible in the summer. Because Yuzuru, as an example, won so many titles this season BUT the total prize money of those wins only covers 10/16 the total money for his training fees.

And PChan is traning in Canada, too. Not to mention they also have the same choreographers for both long and short program. The 160k that his father was mentioning also does not include airfees and accommodation either. Even if I made $100k a year, it's still not enough if I want to become an elite skater.

And JOC money and Olympic scholarship is just one, if I remember correctly? They invest money in the skaters so they can make benefits from them. But I am not sure how they take the benefits back?

And as far as I've heard, JFS took at least 20% of Mao's income, so I guess it's the same for other skaters. I hope it's not even more.

JFS gets money from the goverment and sponsors for the use of the sportment/ woman athletes image, brandmarks on sporting events and on the pretty little jackets of the sportmen/ woman, and certanly from Olympics. But they can not take money from the athletes unles you call it "tax" (is the japanese friends could tell us how big is the tax rate in Japan is).

This I believe. I don´t know how taxes work in Japan, but in most countries the more you earn the more you pay.

About a month ago I posted how Kim Yuna earning were put around US$14MILLIONS, (Mao didn´t even made the list so maybe between US$10 to US$8 millions would be my estimate). So maybe that is. Here is a list of tax rates in Japan would do the math but I actually should be working right know. As it says:

And just for references us$10millions = 1,022,400,000 yens. So, yes they get a lot of taxes.

About who pays for the athlete, I have only read about how United State works. I think top 5 in every category get some kind of money, top athletes like Meryl and Charlie and Evan Lysacek (remember one of the reason Evan stop skating after Olympics was because he thought he wasn´t getting enough money from the US Figure Skating...) are fully cover in things like coaches, coreographers, facilities, clothes...Others sportmen and women will get schoolarships (Richard Dornbush and Mirai Nagasu work with Michael Weiss fundation).

In the case of Japan it looks like some Universities (Kansai University, Chukyo University ) give some kind of schoolarship, since the sport is so popular some get money from enterprise.

In Yuzuru is case as far as 2011 JFS send him to Russia to work with choreographers. So maybe those are coverer for them.

i think you're correct about JFS covering the training cost of their skaters and in return, the skaters need to win(reward money) or very much earn to pay for the some of the expenses. i dont think machida paid on his own for his training, if remember correctly, ive read somewhere that JOC had olympic scholarship programs for skaters and yuzuru is just one of them and i think there are many other skaters who were receiving the scholarship including machida . the only good thing about sponsors is that they cover a lot of other expenses but in return its like they owned the skater like what happened with yuzuru and ana. they cant even introduced hanyu without adding ana to his name

Thank you for the information. I think JFS works like a company and the skaters are (somewhat) their employees.

Skaters are trained by JFS's retired skaters/coaches. Sometimes JFS send them to some training camps over the worlds. I think the top skaters (at least top 3) are covered for their coaching fees to some extent, or even all (except the choreography and costumes, blades and skating boots I suppose).

If I understand it right, then in return for all the training/coaching fees/scholarships skaters have receive from JFS, in the summer they attend all the ice shows of JFS and their sponsors.
So the income they receive from JFS is no different from salaries, I suppose.

JFS has many power over their skaters, like assigning new coaches or sending skaters to training camp. I remember Daisuke and Miki Ando did something like "slap JFS in the face" when they refused the JFS's assignment (changing coach). I remember a Mao's fan complained that Mao wanted to train in Japan but JFS sent her to a faraway place she didn't like.

I am sure JFS plays a large role in all these things. And it's obvious that they covered quite large amount of money for their top skaters. So I am not surprised if they ask something in return (ice shows, tv shows, interviews...).

This website has been linked before as source of info on Yuzuru's earnings but it is extremely unreliable, as I've said before, so please stop referencing to it. There is a lot of info that is undisclosed to the public, like what he gets from JSF and his contract with ANA.
It also doesn't make sense to compare his expenses to PChan. Patrick might spend 160000 Canadian dollars per season but Javier was able to support himself and his training in Canada during 2011/2012 season only with the money he made in competitions, as the Spanish fed wasn't able to help him much because of the crisis in Spain's economy. And he had only won one gold, one silver on the GP, and bronze at GPF.

JSF does not pay all of his skaters expenses, they just give some funding, and the top-tier skaters get the most funds. Yuzuru has all of his training expenses + choreographer + coach + costumes + ice time if he needs in Japan + flights, covered by ANA. So he doesn't have to worry about any of that. I don't know if he has to pay for his accomodation in Canada or not, but even if he has, the earnings he gets in competition would be more than enough (remember Javier). And then he has the money from JSF, JOC scholarship, his contract as JOC Symbol Athlete (from 10 to 20 million yen, we do not know the exact amount) and what he makes from shows.
I do not know the details but I wouldn't be surprised if skaters had to do a certain number of shows a year in Japan because of JSF.

Off-topic but Skate America 2014 is announced to be in Hoffman Estates, IL. Which would be awesome because I would rather go to Chicago (since the place is only 45 min away) then some town in Canada I've never heard of for Skate Canada.

I agree. Chicago is nonstop flight for me while Kelowna, BC is two stops and more expensive even though I live on the west coast. It's only a week earlier than Skate Canada, so not much of a difference. However, I'm sure Yuzu's team will be interested in having him skate against Patrick again early in the season. We'll know soon I guess.
