After the low score in the short and the temporary 8 place, how did you keep your spirit for the LP?
T: At first I was devastated. But Max brought me back to life (?!pun intended here?!) when he said that all is not that catastrophic with the scores. That we even have a chance at the podium.
M: I felt very ashamed the first day. Not only we, but the rest of the Russian pairs “distinguished” themselves by falling and the rest of the competition skated in the last group and it was clear they will be placed before us. For the SP we got 12 less than usual, but our SB of 70 no one had reached yet, so that was pleasant. But when I understood that we fell behind the Japanese, Italian, Canadian etc. pairs, I felt shame. Then I saw that to the third place we needed 5 points and told Tania. We knew our SB for the LP 132 points plus pennies (meaning the tenths and hundredths), and realized that there is a chance. We figured that getting 8 point to win over S/S was not probable…
T: As it turned out it might have been possible…
M: But the third place-that was our goal. I was so primed for the LP-get out on the ice, do all, show the best skate of the season. I was very pumped up, very concentrated, all elements did like a beast, approached them very aggressively. At the end, when we finished, I had so much power left in me to skate the whole thing one more time from the beginning.
Your LP The Black Swan was very appropriate to the drama of the moment.
M: I had always had this personal dream to skate Swan Lake, but I never wanted to play the Prince. When we started working the program, I was happy to play the Evil Genius, and Tania had to play the transformation from white to the black swan. We tried to follow the plot line of the movie and we hope it came out fine. In general we like setting ourselves complicated problems.
We have some thoughts on the Olympics but for now they are dormant and wait. In general often music is found by accident: here I was going to the movie and immediately decided that we must skate on this. In the middle of the 2010/2011 season we already knew what we will skate on the next year. Tania and me of course feel close to Russian music but we don’t get stuck on classics. Our former SPs are done on modern music. I would like to say that our coach, NM is very open to any new ideas.
You in Nice after LP had standing ovation and that was already a second time after the WC in Moscow. What do you feel in such moments?
T: In Moscow I almost cried from feelings. There we had special emotions, which I don’t think I will ever forget. They say that from tension the hairs on the hands and head stand straight. When we went on the ice, that is what I felt. Also we skated last. We felt as if there were electric currents from the seats, we felt the place was like a live organism, we felt its pulse. When you skate you always feel if the audience love you, if they support you. Hopefully this kind of support we will feel in Sochi (?! little did they know
?!). During the second half of the program there was such noise from the audience, that we could not hear the music. But in Nice it was utterly quiet because all were tense and were afraid for us. The only noise was from the skates on the ice and when we did the one of the elements where the music is lower, even the photographers did not dare take pictures, just absolute quiet. So when we finished the whole place errupted and applauded. NM was so happy, showed such emotions that gave us a shock with her reactions.
To get a standing ovation - is that an art?
When the audience stops seeing how all this is very hard and complicated to do, exactly then starts the art. When Max and I watch ballet, we always understand how much work and efforts stand behind each step. In all we often go to ballet so that we don’t become only sports robots. Professionals must self develop in many ways.
Only sometimes it so happens that we try to develop further, but our audience doesn’t. For example Max in Romeo and Juliette at the end shows raises two fingers up, which in the language of the ballet means "oath of eternal love”. And when we read in various forums, and even in the press that Maxim shows the audience that they will be in second place, or that it was the sign of Victory, it is a strange thing to hear from our audience. In your opinion, what distinguishes your pair from the others?
M: I think that our power is in the fact that we are trying to get the figure skating from being technical to being an art. We wanted to do this the way the Canadians and Americans had done for the ice dance. When I become a choreographer after I retire, I promise to never do a program unthinkingly. It is not acceptable when a choreographer takes a random music and choreographs their story on it, without any connection between the two. The music composer knew what he composed. Ideally judges should lower scores in such situation.
We always try to give soul to every program, especially LP, because with the SP it is very hard to do so, they have many technical elements and it is hard for the choreography to stand out. But I think that in pairs and ice dance skaters need to pay more attention to artistry, because two people can express emotions twice better than one.
Do you have to work on new elements?
M: If you mean quads, then no, we are not taking this path. As for triples, new ones take a lot of time to work out and take time from the pair elements. In the last year the top world pairs did not do them cleanly on a fourth level. What does that tell us? That if the top pairs don’t do it stable, then the level of technical difficulty is very high. The current top pairs started their career with the old system, when the classics were appreciated. For example it was appreciated when the partner could do the hold while going on the entire length of the ice rink, while now some cannot do that. We are different and if we work on new elements, then we come up with more complicated and more beautiful variants of the elements we have already worked out.
As concerns age and power, we could continue skating after the Olympics in Sochi, but if the figure skating goes to the quads, we will retire, because that would be a murder of the sport and all its beauty.
Why at the end of the season did you go to Altai, and not to some warm place.
T: We had many traumas, and in Altai, there was planned an entire rehabilitation with many procedures. We lived in the taiga, air was clean, beauty all around, we liked it very much. For me that was the farthest point in Russia where I have ever been. It was very interesting.
I think that you are very happy people whom in sports was given a second and well earned chance.
M: Yes, good changes in life are capable of opening a second breath (?! I think this is some special phrase in Russian?!). And that is healthy. For us all happened well, like a puzzle. Each of us has his strong sides, which in sum gives strong result. In life I am a very emotional person and in the work on the programs this helps us, because I better feel how to represent the characters. Tania is a very technical partner, she helps with the nuances. We don’t have a leader, because we each know what is needed and what each must do. NM very cleverly keeps us in balance.
And when someone says that Tatiana Volosozhar is the best partner in the world, that she is a star, that doesn’t hurt me. First, she is my star, second-it is true, she is the best. I myself say that to everyone.

I seriously think that European/American fans need to make a move and organize a fan meeting with them. I've watched a few fan meeting vids with Tessa&Scott and they are a joy to watch. I take my hat off to the japanease fans, but I get the feeling that they're often pretty restrained and shy and it makes V/T feel a bit awkwad at times.

I saw Stars on Ice this last weekend with my mom and now she wants to go to Skate America! I got our tickets today. I don't think V/T will go since they've won it twice but I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I would LOVE to go to a meet and greet for them!!!!! I have no idea where to even look for it though.

I don't think the pun was intended.
Seems more like a coincidence. The names of songs are not translated normally, so in Russian this phrase in the interview doesn't seem to remind of the song too obviously (if you don't come to think of it). When I was reading the interview in Russian, I didn't notice it at all - that these words correlated so much with the name of the song. But in English it really sounds as a pun. Thank you so much for the translation, it's so good to actually understand exactly what they're saying and not guessing it when using a translator.
You can't loose hope. From what I know the winners (in the podium order) of the World Cup can choose the Grand Prix events they wanna skate at and the other pairs are just waiting for ISU to decide where they will compete. Tatiana and Maxim didn't participate at the Worlds this year so I don't know if they have the right to choose the competitions they want, even though to me winning the Olympics gold should give then the opportunity to choose. I don't know the exact rules.
