Joannie was the defending world silver medallists and the only skater who had a full arsenal of triples so if there is a suggestion the judges gave her bronze think again -she arguably should have the highest pcs - she has some of the most intricate and developed programs.

And she still had her mom die days before. No I am not saying the judges gave her the bronze. I do think however think her performance is more impressive given the circumstance. In my eyes any boost she may have received was arguably earned.
She had a combination of the most stressful circumstances and the most horrible intersect and she rose to the occasion. That is impressive and respectable. And it is also hard to compete against.

Where do you think Mirai goes from here? Even if she skates a good LP, she has pretty much lost any PCS advantage she had over the second- and third-tier skaters. After 2010, many of us thought she would contend for world medals but I wonder what her goals and motivation are at this point in her career.

Yeah, I guess we just saw how working with TomZ has helped her URs. Sigh. She did look happier out there and not so glum.
It's early in the season yet, I'm not giving up hope on her. She just started working with Tom so hopefully by Nationals she'll have lots of competitions under her belt where the jumps will get better. I do see some improvement.

One thing she should stop doing is any -1T combos; not only does she get that 1T invalidated anyways, she also gets straight -3 GOE as well; just leave it as a solo jump if you can't get at least 2 revs on the second part and leave all the deductions for the missed pass.
I really don't know what to think of this, as her practice reports all seemed to point towards a solid showing. It's very much mental at this point. (Although I did see a picture of her kid-jump and she still isn't in an optimal air position, which can't her the URs...

That was a mental mistake, but I think so are her < habits. When she actually does the elements well the commentators slam her for having a choreographically empty program. I'm not sure there is much she can do to get her mojo back.

I was so sorry to see this Mirai's showing today 
She seems to have adopted good training habits and I thought the change of scenery would do her well. I hope this was a freak wonky event and she proves me wrong in the long, but at this point I'm not seeing a good season for her.

Certainly her chances of making another Worlds team has gone. Her federation looked at results in the GP, etc. leading up to Nationals this past year and her inconsistent results kept her off of the Olympic team. I'm sure they're going to do the same at next year's Nationals. No matter how well she does there she isn't going to make the Worlds team. Again. Sigh. :disapp:

With Mirai we never know, I was impress by her skating at Japan Open. Maybe her FS will be awesome, we will see

If she cannot combine the elements with a choreographically strong program, then she should just hang it up. If she nailed it today, I don't think she'd be criticized for the choreo. It was a decent program.
Off Topic: I was IMPRESSED with Liza Tuk today. Looks like she worked out her body problems. Good for her.

It is skating so anything is possible. Remember Maria Butyrskaya was pulled off the Russian team and she went on to win several world medals including a world title. But Mirai sadly appears to not be able to cope well. Even the JO results it looked good but tonnes of UR were her downfall. She is skating in a skating nation and that is hard to tolerate. She is undoubtedly trying her best. She can still pull up. I think she should be thrilled she has two GP's! I thought at one point she could be the next Kwan but I am doubtful; I think she has the potential to still win a world medal on the "right" day and situation but is more prone to be out of the top twelve.
