How would you describe an ELITE skater of today?

I don't see how it's possible to settle on just one definition ,because there are so many variables at the National and World levels. In Canada , I've been used to thinking of our elite as those who rise high enough to gain funding from the federation at the senior level. Of course, If you have great depth in a particular discipline, and only fund the top 5, your list might not really be representative.
Then again, not all federations assist the same numbers ,or to the same degree. And some federations have more skilled skaters than others, so again ,some very fine skaters may not be recognized. Things are not equal to begin with.

I like gkelly's classifications..except for the problem of reaching a consensus. Who's shall we trust to be the judge ( ..and what is their opinion on URs and TRs ?) ?;)

I'm in the camp that thinks limiting the term elite to the top 10 or world medalists is way too small...I think of them as the " Creme de la creme " , not mere elites..:rolleye::biggrin:
