Yes, I've watched the interview and it was heartbreaking.

Personally, I just want to deleted my entire memory about Wc......The whole ”Deniss and Quads” thing during the practice session almost drives me mad. The interview makes it feels worse........that I don’t think I would ever gather my courage to watch it again.

Sometime I just feel like figure skating is such a beautiful but cruel sport........ The reality is that you go for the quads, practice hundreds of them, suffering from the mental and physical pain and the taking the potential risk of getting injures , but no one (even the best jumping coach and technique specialist) could ever promise that it will work at the competition. The only thing you can do is to give out all you had and hopefully.....

But I guess....this is the reality that athletes like Deniss need to face....As a fan I can do nothing to about it, but it just gives me more respect to the skaters who chose this pathway and will continue work toward it.

Talking about motivation, of course Deniss never lack of it. I guess maybe what I try to say is that.....well, Deniss may not put the ranking as his priority (and btw personally, I doubt it...), for him , the most important may be to bring out the perfect performance(including all the technique elements, of course) to his audience and keeps challenging himself, which, in my opinion, require no less strength(if not more).

And about the “rival” from the same rink.....well, let’s face it , nothing in the world only have positive side. It will bring both the opportunity and challenge, and I had faith that he will cope it well[emoji6][btw I do think Koshiro had been in Champéry for about.....more than two years? At this point in time they would already got used to each other and it is not like a sudden changes that come out of no where , so I don’t think we need to be concern about it.......

Next season may be better, it may not be as well. We never know.( I am not being negative, but ......the reality is, no one could change the past, no one could decide the future......)We live in this moment, which and that is what makes the “present” a gift.

I don't think Deniss and Koshiro will have to face each other very often and certainly aren't competing for the highest medals at Worlds or, say, GPF at this point in their careers. It's nothing at all like, say, Eteri's rink where you have to compete against your rivals from the same country every day (of whom there are several, fighting for the very highest places). It's essential to have some kind of challenge and competitive atmosphere to spur you on, though, so I don't see any downside to the fact that they are training together. There is no skater who is so special that they need 100% attention from a coach without any training mates.

I remember an interview with Stephane where he said that his students would sometimes ask him when he got his quad or 3A (yes, we know it was never the most stable ;)) and he would say to them that it doesn't matter when he got it, because everyone is on their own path and it will come to them when the time is right. So I'm sure he impresses this message on to Deniss. Being an athlete is difficult, tedious, and frustrating no matter who you are, things don't always work...but when you get something, finally, it's surely very rewarding. The most important thing is just to keep working and not give up.

Deniss mentioned he did more off ice training this past season (extra?). Since the Olympic Committee came through with some funding can we get an announcement from the Skating Association too? [emoji28] That could basically help him stay in the second to last group if he could attend more Challenger competitions, since we don’t really know what his rink time looks like during the season. We all want Deniss to get the most out of his training days

For personal reasons, I haven't been able to keep up with the threads of all my favorite skaters but was finally able to take some time to get back into this thread. I enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts...Regarding quads -- I have watched skaters train quads. Frankly, when they are told to do this, do this, do this, etc., it seems that it becomes really difficult to NOT overthink things. Some people are just natural jumpers, and it's amazing how it comes so easily to them. Deniss needs to just keep plugging away at it, and he'll get it eventually. I think of it as a two-step process, where first it has to become consistent in practice. Then the competition phase of it is a whole other story. Somehow when you throw in the music, the nerves, the adrenaline, the heart beating faster, now it's a whole different ballgame.

He can do it though! Hopefully Ghislain will be able to lend a new pair of eyes and offer some fresh advice. He is quite a jump guru...As always, best of luck to Deniss. So glad to see he will be doing ice shows and will be able to earn some money for his training and get performance experience...Look forward to seeing what his programs will be for next season.

It was a real delight to read your posts and I can say that in each of them there is a lot I can fully agree with. :agree:

Before I turn off my computer in the evenings, I usually love to listen to some piece of music, look at some beautiful sights or watch some figure skating performances. It was a real joy to watch his Euro Champs "Four Seasosns," "Tosca" and, of course, last year's FP at Worlds. This year, it hurt to tears.

Anyway, I strongly believe in Deniss and I’m sure he will overcome all the difficulties and show wonderful performances. Dear boy, you simply have to make us happy! :)

However, I agree that rivalry can cause some problems. As far as I have heard, Orser's superstars do not train on the same ice, but on different ones. And I have read about severe rows between the students of one coach, especially in Russia.

But I want to think that it won't happen with our “trinity”. Mostly because of their personalities. And it depends much on Stephane, how he can solve the situation in case. I’m sure he won’t tolerate anything negative.

On the other hand, if I put myself in Deniss' shoes, I wouldn’t want my rivalries to see that I have any problems. Deniss is an emotional boy with a changing mood. I remember a bit from this:

Fan meeting with Stéphane Lambiel in Minsk 2019 19.47 Btw to my mind, one of the most interesting fan meetings.

Happy Easter!

To be honest, figure skating is not like a direct combating sport [like football or basketball], it more depends on what an individual can produce on ice instead of what their “rival” do.Plus , as Siverfoxes had mentioned before, although they are both enjoyable to watch, they are still .......well, far away from competing for a medals from each other’s grab. So I still don’t think it’s really matter at that stage (and to be honest, similar situation occur in every training group, it was consider like.....normal, in figure skating world)

Talking about attention, Stephane gives all his attention to the student that is working with him, so it’s not like more student will distract himself from taking the responsibility of each of them.(Sorry about my poor english......I can’t really express my idea very well, better to just check the video that AgnesR shared above) So, don’t worry about it~ They will be alright,

Plus, I’m glad to know that I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t get through the “What kind of Deniss will we have for today?”thing [emoji12][emoji12][emoji12] It just soooo funny

Yes, that's what I said initially. Javi and Yuzuru were training at different ice rinks at some point because of the rivalry, although they were good friends off-ice. I think, it will depend on Stephane's experience and wisdom. If he feels something... If he finds out something's wrong, I hope, he can handle it.

Yes! It was really funny and very cute! :luv17: At his fan-meetings, Stephane always tells soo cute things about Deniss!

Happy Easter to all of you!

Just wanted to point out that that would be a new situation for Deniss to have a real competitor at the same rink. In fact for me it's great as they can push one another to the point they couldn't achieve without healthy rivarly. Koshiro is in quite different situation as he has to fight for a place in the national team and I feel (but maybe it's just a cliche...) he has more competetive mindset Deniss can share with him. I mean it's nothing wrong for an athlete to say "I want to win" sometimes, not only "I want to perform perfectly". On the other hand I don't know if this additional motivation is what Deniss needs and that's why my wonderings arose.
My view is rather having both positive and negative sides, in theory, and learning how to deal with them both are important for experience, especially if Deniss had never had such competitions in his home rinks before. Koshiro has always been sharing rinks with rivals of his age (and both older and younger generations) since he moved to Okayama (Sena Miyake, for example, and quite a few others not known internationally) and he's used to it. I remember reading Koshiro's interview that Koshiro was very surprised that Deniss actually recognizes him as his rival (and friend) when Deniss has been internationally acclaimed as one of the top skaters. That said, Koshiro is quite good at building relationships with others and befriend with many skaters (like, obvious ones are Shoma, Tomono, more recently Camden, and many others), and I personally can't imagine him in a negative rivalry drama. He was holding a Latvian flag with another rival of his, Mitsuki Sumoto, to give big cheers for Deniss in Saitama.

But I want to think that it won't happen with our “trinity”. Mostly because of their personalities. And it depends much on Stephane, how he can solve the situation in case. I’m sure he won’t tolerate anything negative.
Deniss and Koshiro start competing on the ice, other people just let them be, and then, out of nowhere, Stephane jumps in with serious eyes, starts skating and jumping quads in front of them. The battle between Deniss vs Koshiro somehow changes into a battle between Deniss+Koshiro vs Stephane ... as they feel they'd have to team up to compete with Stephane somehow! That's what I foresee in my imagination.

btw I do think Koshiro had been in Champéry for about.....more than two years?
Close, almost 2 years now ;) (I think he moved to Champery in May, 2017 or something like that.)

I think, it will depend on Stephane's experience and wisdom. If he feels something... If he finds out something's wrong, I hope, he can handle it.
I trust Stephane Lambiel. :agree:

Btw, there's a recent Japanese article on friendly rivalries of Satoko and Rika under Hamada and Kaori and Mai under Nakano. They share the rinks, always practice together and motivate/inspire each other, and it sounds like they all love having rivals (not enemies) nearby. The writer points out that it's the coach's ability and responsibility to keep such relationships healthy.

Yeah I can remember hearing it from my friends back into Wc...and it is just so sweet and warm-hearted.....It is such a great thing to have supportive friend from the same rink come and cheer for you. I think during the off-season in 2017(when Deniss still somehow remembered his INS password[emoji28]) , he also had shared lots of picture of him cocking with Koshiro.

Deniss and Koshiro start competing on the ice, other people just let them be, and then, out of nowhere, Stephane jumps in with serious eyes, starts skating and jumping quads in front of them. I was drinking waters when I read this post, and It took me so much effort to actually control myself not to burst into laugh. I remember Koshiro once expresses his surprise when Stephane shows his Quads to Koshiro and Deniss when they are still struggle with it , and later I do think I find similar concept in Stephane’s fan meeting interview. So .....I bet my dinner on it that this is exactly what’s happen in Champéry[emoji6], I mean, is there any other thing better than that ? Lol

A little passage from a very very long interview with Stephane last year. Deniss is mentioned there.

On August 24, 2018, Stephane’s fan meeting was held at Shin-Yokohama, Japan. He stayed in Japan to appear at Friends on Ice.

- (Question 2) We love your article on SPUR magazine, “Sensei and I”.
Is there any story behind the photo shoot you could share for us?

So as you know, I love fashion, and I was very honored when the magazine asked me to do the photo shooting last year, and they wanted to do again this year. So we did it during Kobe, Fantasy on Ice. When we arrived with Deniss (Vasiljevs), and we meet them at the photo shooting that day, and their idea was to, they really, the photo shooting organization, they really loved my coat, my coaching coat, so that’s why they organized to wear such a coat to get close to what I’m usually wearing. And then I think they wanted to do more like a little bit of modern taste of us. For example on this picture, it’s very much like a “Romeo & Juliette”. movie. The spirit of Romeo and his friends.. that’s the kind of spirit. And I think actually Deniss looks little bit look like Leonardo Dicaprio.

So, this was to probably show more candid spirit, with the white sweater. And I was also wearing some white. Maybe we can see it on the beginning (of the page).

We did many many pictures, so not all of them, but I was wearing white also. And here, they asked us to jump. So we did the lots of version of this jumps. And finally this one was really special. It was really random, like. they didn’t ask us special jumps. Just asked “Let’s jump!”. and Deniss was doing one move, I was doing another move, but eventually We got some very nice positions.

And about this one, I think it was more like a HARRY POTTER kind of mood and atmosphere. And he (Deniss) was also wearing glasses at the beginning, but then they (the crew) decided to put glasses only on me, so it was really fun to act, in this photo shooting. And we had lot of pleasure. Deniss also. It was for him, it was special moment. To be able to wear such a beautiful clothes just a short time. We both enjoyed I think he (Deniss) also is more and more conscious about the style, and how to fit the clothes together. So, It’s a good experience for both of us.

Deniss is also mentioned in Q3,Q9, Q10- here about Deniss' baking talents. I wish I could taste his pastries!
Q19 Stephane speaks about his goals in coaching. It's just what we have been talking about. Stephane will be a perfect coach.

Just realizing that it‘s been soooo long since I‘ve been active here...
Hope to change that again!

I loved that Fan-Interview with Stéph. Generally really funny. A nice gem to get for the off-season.

So, maybe some of you have seen it elsewhere already, I published this already almost 3 weeks ago, but in case anyone who is interested hasn‘t seen it yet:

Here I wrote my personal Team Champéry season review, most of all focused on Deniss. It‘s been an incredible season with him even though not his most successful one... Hope you‘ll enjoy reading:

Thank you very much for sharing your personal experience - especially with those of us who had no possibility to see Deniss' skating live nor attend meetings with him . Believe it's important and encouraging for him to know he has a group of dedicated fans, supporting him for better or worse.

I'd like very much to go to Graz for next Europeans but I'm not sure if I am able to manage it. The same with GP (we don't know which GP events Deniss will be invited to but I hope he gets two, can't imagine NHK, Rostelecom or IdF not inviting him, despite his Worlds' result). If he gets NHK or Rostelecom I see no chances for him to come to Warsaw Cup either... So maybe Lombardia Trophy? Just waiting for the information and hope I see him with my own eyes finally :).

From Yuna Aoki Insta. Nice pics from Champery. Deniss looks so slim.

Deniss lost weight recently, didn't he?

Good to see them all. Looks like the first Yuzuru's coach sent two of his students to the camp. They have just left Champery, so next week probably starts the second of the announced camps with Ghislaine Briand. I keep my fingers crossed for Deniss and his jumps

On the ligher note: I love the socks contest among boys .

A glimpse of Deniss' performances from SOI 2019.

His SP and interview.

Iron

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CKa1s80IxQ&feature=youtu.be

Energetic and expressive performances!
It's a pity he can't skate Samurai at shows.

The "Iron" was just perfect, the perfomance matured so much - the program and Deniss' execution of it were great from the beginning, but in Osaka he was able to make it a very true story (I'm not sure if it's understandable, it's like the greatest actors ability - to make a character truthfully). And he did 3+3 for the first time (usually it was 2+2), what means he didn't switch to the leisure mode (he wanted to be prepared for the camps with Ghislaine?), the more he jumped 3A in "Papa..." also (UR, but he tried his best, didn't he? :)).
When I was watching his Worlds' interviews, I thought how cruel interviewers (and cameras) sometimes were: an athlete was exhausted and desperate by their performance and they must answer the questions, keeping up appearance that they weren't sick at heart... And in Osaka we had the interview where Deniss was really tired and sweaty but he had to answer the conventional questions... I feel a great respect to him as he is able to deal with such situations (not to mention his language abilities).

I found a video illustrating the situation mentioned by people attending the Worlds' practice: Yuzuru paying attention to Deniss' spread eagle (which was at a sharper angle than his own one;)). It's such a good excercise for a body balance :agree2:. Go to the 0:45 and watch the background at 0:46 :luv17:.

Just a terrible thought: what if Stephane, reckoning that Deniss reminds Leonardo DiCaprio, makes a "Romeo and Juliet" program for him?
:drama: ;)

OK, in fact I believe he's not so obvious in music choices .

I don't care about DiCaprio, but, actually, it's not a bad idea at all. As I've written before, I'd love to see Deniss in some kind of sporty performance, but I wouldn't mind watching a very romantic program as well. I think he lacks some romance in his life.

Your post reminded me about Stephane's “Romeo” in 2008. I found it and enjoyed again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO0GJmLwVWk

Stephane created an excellent program "Four seasons" for Deniss and he or somebody else could also create something beautiful for Romeo.
