"As the 2015 ISU Grand Prix Series rolls on, we saw the first head-to-head match up of the season between Yuzuru Hanyu and Patrick Chan this week at Skate Canada. During the short programs, performances by a myriad of the sport’s brightest stars were mired in mistakes, with the same skaters rebounding in the rankings after strong long programs. In this week’s “This and That,” we recap 2015 Skate Canada, discuss the strong start to Ashley Wagner’s Grand Prix season, Marissa Castelli’s A-plus fashion sense, Duhamel and Radford’s emotional win and reworking Jason Brown’s long program after a disappointing skate in Graz."

Starting this week, we will be discussing our recaps and interviews with everyone here on Golden Skate. We look forward to chatting with our take. We gave our brutally honest opinions, so what at yours?

Who was your best dressed?

What was your moment of the week?

Who has better skating skills, Hanyu or Chan?

What would it take for the judges to allow the Shibutanis to win U.S. Nationals?

Do Maia and Dice need to give more facial expressions?

You should post a video of yourself logged into GS and sending a post so we know if you're the real Dave. Obviously it will have to be posted under the TSL account

So Dave Lease, welcome (back?) to Golden Skate. At work so will have to answer your questions later but am loving what you and Jenny are doing these days and am really curious to see how this thread develops!

I can already tell you. To another thread war.

Certainly not hoping for a thread war. Hoping for some fun conversation. I believe there are other threads where you can discuss those thoughts.

If you do have any legitimate TSL, Dave Lease and/or Jenny Kirk questions, we can do a bit of a Q+A here as well.

It's the real Dave ;)

Hi Dave! I'm a big TSL fan. Enjoying the GP recaps so far.

100% agree on Ashley wearing Marissa's dress. She looked stunning. When I first saw it (before I learned it was Marissa's) I was super impressed with Ashley's taste.

What are your thoughts on Nam being excluded from the SC gala?

Happy to see TSL "officially" partnering with GS - hopefully a match made in heaven.

Who was your best dressed?

Diva Wagner - hands down. Big improvement over last year's costumes. Hope she keeps Marissa's dress for the short!

What was your moment of the week?

Tie - Diva Wagner winning over Liza and The Shibs FD - gave me chills.

Who has better skating skills, Hanyu or Chan?

Chan. Patrick should just change his middle name to Edges. (b/c everyone praises Patrick's Edges)

What would it take for the judges to allow the Shibutanis to win U.S. Nationals?

Bribery? I don't see it happening unless C/B really screw up.

Do Maia and Dice need to give more facial expressions?

I'm not that big on facial expressions in FS but I would like to see something more from Dice. He was great in his FS, jump wise, but he needed more performance. Maia's face is okay - I like her smile during that extension lift.

I'm not sure if they just went with the top placements. It would've been nice to see him skate since he finished relatively well and is from the host country. I wasn't aware of any sort of debate regarding the gala. We were actually filming our recap while the gala was occurring. I'm often writing notes and re-reviewing before we film our recaps while the galas are going on, so I don't get to see them until later. I think the more performance opportunities the better. And, I believe home audiences do want to see their skaters perform, especially a burgeoning star like Nam.

Glad to be here. I had to chuckle over Patrick. Lee Chandler is always telling me that all of Canada's edges can be credited to Ann from Nexxice and her Annie's Edges seminars.

Yeah, maybe, but we could at least try to have some constructive dialog.

I have two quick questions of my own:

How good are Tim Dolensky's skills compared to Patrick Chan's?

How good are the Shibutanis' skating skills compared to Patrick Chan's? Because honestly, while PC obviously has gorgeous skating skills, for me, personally, he would be more engaging if he gave more face. So is it just that ice dancers are expected to be theatrical, or that PC's SS are so superior to everyone else's that he doesn't need to do more?

ETA Dave Lease these questions are for you, too.

I liked Ashley's dresses:) Clearly white colour goes better with her hair. Was a bit surprised by the black one for her samba routine, well surprised also.
I also think that Liza's "stepmother's" dress with feathers was better than her latest, so hope she'll change it and finally finds the dress for her short!

Who was your best dressed?
Hanyu in the FS. He even had matching skate guards (green/purple). He looked like a japanese anime fighter.

What was your moment of the week?
Chan's FS.

Who has better skating skills, Hanyu or Chan?
Chan.

What would it take for the judges to allow the Shibutanis to win U.S. Nationals?
C/B not able to compete.

Do Maia and Dice need to give more facial expressions?
Yes. Exception: Maia's expression in the SD is perfect (after I learned what the SD is about in this forum the program has grown on me.)

In general, Patrick Chan tends to emote with his body. It isn't just his face. And really, body language is a big component of Performance/Execution. Patrick does convey musicality and emotion through his body. I can repost our judging videos on youtube for review.

I think that facial expressions are always a good added 'cherry' on top. They can certainly add to a performance if they are genuine. Some skaters get nervous to the point where their faces look vacant and even a tad bored because they are focusing. Thus, it is necessary to practice them. Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen had their faces down.

Tim Dolesnky has good skating skills. He isn't in Patrick Chan's league. Tim really does have incredible spins and performs a variety of positions. It is evident he is truly someone who enjoys skating, music, spinning, artistry, etc. and it is why he endeared himself to us.

Look forward to some non-snarky conversation that will be fun and informative.

Will Jenny be posting on GS as well? Hope so. (Not that you are chopped liver, Dave. Pls don't get me wrong.)

(And BTW, pls tell Alokya Perera (sp?) that we are forever grateful for her tweeting and videos from the Freezer Challenge and Broadmoor Open.)

Jenny is weary of message boards from her competitive days, but I may be able to get her to post on here if we are having fun.

Fun Fact: Jenny's mother was a HUGE message board, e-mail list junkie. Pat Harris used to debate/argue with my friend, Louis (older brother in snark in many ways), as he was decidedly Team Sasha/Naomi. Jenny is aware of that as well and their awkward encounter was my everything.

By the way, does it mean that you are using only this fs board?:) And also, is it reaallyyy the 1st time you registered here? Being a fs fan, it's hard to believe you didn't try to find any

I don't post on FSU, if that is what you are asking. I do my best to avoid after there was a thread on us that got out of hand a few years back. I avoided message boards for some time after that, but I do have friends who read and will usually read links people send of translations by Tabkha. Reading about yourself is too tempting. I had a bit of an anxiety attack when the thread was going on 30+ pages and really getting out of hand. Even my sister googled me and was reading about it. There is nothing like a family dinner where your older sister says, "So, guess what I read about you on the internet?!"

I posted on here in college as Groskhova. Paula asked me if I wanted to keep that name. I figured many people wouldn't know who Tatiana Groshkova is. That would make me feel depressed and old. I'm turning 30 in February and don't need to be reminded of my rapidly aging ways any more than I already am. My boss already tells me that I'm a disgrace to her Indian family because I'm not married off yet.

Hi Dave and welcome.

Candidly I'm not the biggest fan of this and that, but I do love and deeply appreciate your interviews, so thank you very much for those.

As for your questions, my best dressed was Ashley Wagner. For something a little more outside the box I also liked Bazarova and Deputat's SP costumes :)

What it would take for the Shibs to win Nationals: Death of Chock and Bates?
