Figure Skating Friendships

Oooooh, this is a lovely thread, full of positivity - thank you everyone. I can't post the clips at the moment that I immediately thought of when I saw the title of this thread, but I love those moments between Javi and Yuzu when they cheer and clap for each other as friends and training buddies and when they graciously congratulate each other. It always seems very genuine and honest to me.

Shoma Uno and Sota Yamamoto. They have been apart for a year while Sota was in Juniors and Shoma moved to Seniors. But here's hoping they'll have more adventures, now that Sota is moving up to Seniors.

Omg yesss this bromance is one of the cutest of all time. Also I have a crazy future prediction that they might both be guess commentators for a Japanese sports TV show for figure skating after they retire (like Nobu) and they would be hilarious 😂😂

And the two.of them together are 100+ on the cuteness scale! Because of their GP assignments, I don't think they'll meet up again until Japanese Nationals (darn!)...I finally got the picture that I had been trying to post to work! (See above)

It might be tough to get Shoma to talk enough to be a commentator :laugh2:, although he seems to be a little better lately. :drama:

Mm yeah, and it's not guaranteed Sota will make the world or 4CC team after that too. That's a nice picture! Hopefully Shoma works on his people skillz by the time they retire :biggrin:
 
OK. About Lyosha's paradise. In short... :)

Joubert. The story about Yagudin and Joubert is a long story... Brian tells, that Lyosha helped not only with the jumps, but also taught him the methods of the psychological preparation to competitions. In 2006 Yagudin wasn't at the Olympics with Joubert, but he called Brian to say the words, which Brian remembers. Only two photos:

Amodio. The French liked Yagudin's work with Joubert. So they invited him to advise Florent Amodio in 2013. Lyosha came... and likely all the French skaters were riding Yagudin. "Who is that boy? Lyosha has advised all the team there!" - the Russians were writing on his forum. People also noticed, that Adrien Tesson and Romain Ponsart added the tag #the boss to Yagudin's photos. Amodio said: "I suffer every single day. He teaches me so much." Though it seemed they were busy with "very useful things"...

Averbukh invited Kovtun, when other skaters were performing at Olympics in Sochi. It happened, that Kovtun was skating in Yagudin's shirt and in Marinin's skates. Yagudin constantly was watching Kovtun's skating. And he could share his thoughts with the audience in the end of the performance (Yagudin likes microphones). Watching Kovtun:

They were showing steps to each other, they were competing... As for Yagudin, he started to jump 3F at the performances. (He couldn't believe he succeeded to do it again. That is why even Denis Ten posts a video with his flip.)
As for Kovtun... Yagudin could say gently, that Kovtun would like to jump one more time. Kovtun was surprised, the audience was clapping... :cheer2: And Kovtun had to jump.

Any Alexei is Lyosha in Russia. I thought I should write "Alexei" on the international forum, but... I've seen short names so many times, that now I think I may say "Lyosha". "Lyosha" is enough for me, though some girls like to write "Lyoshechka", "Lyoshik" and even "Lyolik"... Actually, it is funny for us, when in a foreign film the Russians always say "Ivan" or "Alexei" to each other.

Even Denkova says "Povka" now, when she talks to Povilas, though her Russian isn't perfect. Somebody was calling her "Albenchik"... "Povka" is a rude name. "Albenchik" isn't rude.
 
Back in the 90's, I used to stalk Maria Butyrskaya and in 1999, Maria spent most of her free time with Tatiana Malinina. I always wondered how they became friends. I'd love to interview these two great skaters sometime.

noskates is from the U.S. -- and understandably would have little, if any, familiarity with the Russian language (AFAIK).

I believe the underlying question from noskates was why Lyosha is a common nickname for Alexei.

The intention of my reply was to shed light on that underlying question.

Thank Bloody Gawd.........It is very nice to see those two together and relaxed after such a competitive rivalry. OK, Tuk is a shrimp!! I've never seen her in person but, I have seen Slutskaya on more than one occasion and she looks tall next to Tuk. How tall is Tuk?

Actually, there are enough photos, on which they are smiling or hug one another. Different years. And of course, they can speak with respect and etc.
