Nathan Chen

Regarding injuries, I think there are a few things that could be done to somewhat mitigate overuse injuries. Things such watering down jump content whenever possible or taking part in fewer competitions. Even taking an entire year off might be a good idea if the goal is to make it to Beijing. In his JP Facebook FC Nathan's mom was quoted as saying that they don't like to plan too far ahead because they know that injuries are a part of the sport.

Nathan is always the cool one, isn't he! :)

Which commentators mentioned Nathan? I haven’t had a chance to watch much coverage of Euros yet
---------------------------------------------------------

I heard they mentioned about Nathan at US Nationals during Deniss's sp:

Oh, I'm so glad there will be a send-off event! It will be hard to sneak out of work early to go to Long Beach during the work week, but I will definitely try my best! Maybe I can even get my multiplying Nathan cornflakes boxes signed .

I'm definitely planning on going. Are there any more burning questions that would be worth asking as another mini-interview? :D
Also, I still have not found any boxes near me - just been the hockey and snowboarding. /rabblerabble

This is an example (almost at the end of the video, there are others but they do not all upload to youtube): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnWdbNeKF8I --- Sorry, I did not realize that Pacafla had already commented, if I find others I will upload them

Let's send the good energies to Nathan the new US Quad King :hap10: (and to Donovan, who goes to the 4 continents), let's hope for a memorable Olympics

Adam uploaded an IG story a few days ago where he found Nathan's cereal at Ralph's.

Questions:

1. Who chose the music for his new EX?
2. What's his first choice for college? How would he continue to train if he attended someplace like Harvard?
3. What about the polar bear onesie?

----------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know where it started but lately Nathan is becoming known as the "Jump Monster" in Japanese media, and now it appears to have migrated over to Korean media as well. Here they are hyping the showdown between "Japan's Figure Skating Emperor, Yuzuru Hanyu" and "America's Jump Monster, Nathan Chen."

In Adam's latest IG story there's a clip of Nathan practicing his SP. It looks to me like he's setting up for a lutz where he has the solo jump in the 2nd half.

Skating Emperor vs. Jump Monster
, I think we need a poster of this!

I like Q1 and Q2, might hold off on Q3 depending how the first two go.
Maybe I'll frame Q2 wrt Kevin Shum (who is at MIT!) so it's less combative. Although if I know Harvard (as much as an MIT alumna can), they will probably bend over backwards to fit Nathan's needs in with the academics. Personally, I think he's as much a lock for getting into Harvard as he was the Oly team, but stranger things have happened I guess. :V
I actually can't recall if Harvard undergrad discourages people for applying for Harvard medical, like Harvard law and MIT grad hopefuls are usually instructed to go to other graduate schools.

ETA: I put up the Netflix Olympic special part with Nathan on Google Drive. It's exactly the same as the one linked in youtube, but this should allow it to be viewable in the U.S. Nathan Chen full segment on "Go For the Gold (03:54)"

You have a good eye! This wouldn't be surprising as he did practice the lutz as the solo jump during that first practice at Nationals (the day before that horrible one...) Hopefully that means the lutz is back in. :)

Glad Nathan is hyped a bit in South Korea where the OG will be held.
But i DONT like the "Jump Monster" slogan though. cos He is such a hot BOI and his skating is beautiful.

It's possible the original intent was to be slightly derogatory, but in the end I believe this kind of hype will just make Nathan even more popular.

More Bridgestone stuff with Ashley. It's their longest conversation ever!

Completely unrelated, but why?

:otopic:
I'm not entirely sure of Harvard's reasoning, but at MIT it was highly encouraged that you leave the relative nerd-safe-haven of MIT to go to another campus for formal graduate work to get a bigger understanding of the world. They do have 5-year programs that combine undergrad and graduate degrees if a student shows advanced progress and it makes sense (advanced for MIT means something entirely different than the rest of the world tbh), but they had a very low re-matriculation rate for MIT undergrads to MIT graduate programs compared to the rest of the Ivy/high end U.S. schools. There were Course (Course = major to the rest of the world) exceptions, but it's been a decade and I don't really remember the details. I do remember however that Course 6 (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) was one of the ones that tried to kick people out to other grad programs since it was the largest major (other than Business hahahaha everyone makes fun of the normal business majors); I think Caltech was the target school for those.
EDIT: relevant song from one of the MIT a cappella groups (Note Course 15 = business)

My ex went MIT->Harvard Law and noted that the retention from Harvard undergrad to Harvard Law was lower than expected, and students that went to undergrad hoping to get a leg up on Law admissions were disappointed. (This person didn't get admitted to Harvard Medical and had double majored in physics/math with a disgustingly high GPA/MCAT score, so I think Harvard Medical is just 8000% more choosy than Harvard Law).

I always laugh a little bit when interviews of Nathan state that he is going to apply for medical school after skating - though I don't know if that the interviewer's fault for misunderstanding the undergrad/medical school path or Nathan needing a tutorial on it... I doubt it's the latter since one (or both?) of his sisters are post-grads. It reminds me of when articles just get the facts wrong - I found a Guardian article that stated that Nathan did all 5 different quads in his FS at US Nats this year. :palmf:

I understand it's different in other countries. In the US med school is strictly postgraduate, while in other countries it's a combined undergraduate/graduate program.

Article: Figure skater Nathan Chen predicted his Olympic future at the age of 10

Nathan BOI is not only hot but also cute. Not an ounce correlation to Monster. but yes, any publicity to promote him in South Korea is good to see.

I think all those interview articles and perhaps Nathan himself (in interview) were meant to refer to pre-med (as his intended undergraduate major), they could have just vaguely said medical school . Both Nathan's parents are professionals in medicine/health field. His sister also majored in pre-med as undergraduate. Nathan seems also very interested in Medicine related subjects. He really got a great chance to get into Harvard.

The only concern is that pre-med is a very tough major, how can he balance his study and skating. minimal 3 hours of figure skating on-ice training daily, let alone off-ice training.

But I think he will become a GREAT doctor( surgeon) if he really put his heart into it, Just looked at those beautiful hands and long fingers. And how do they play with his guitar. I wanna be him patient (fantasy):laugh:

If Nathan decided to take a year off (once he had a taste of what pre-med would be like) to focus on figure skating that could be a pleasure for his figure skating fans. Hope Nathan BOI understand and realize that figure skating is NOW, and he can do school or doctor at any time of his life.

Hope he can go to figure skating competitions in China in the future (hint: 2022 OG). A promise is a promise.

I wonder if those bottles would reach Peru ??? :scratch3:

I wish there were more videos of Nathan in his ballet presentations, he looks very handsome with those suits (well, he was a lovely kid) :luv17:

Unfortunately I think they only ship to the USA. But maybe someone will sell them on Ebay at some point. I've noticed that more Nathan paraphernalia have been showing up on Ebay recently.

about the ballet West article.
It was sweet. I knew Nathan BOI has the best natural turn-out! Even from that infant video of him skating at age 3.
A little error about the composer of Nathan's FS music in the article though, besides the Rite of Spring, the other tracks (brush dance, village dance) is not composed by Chinese composer. It isa composed by English born Australian composer Christopher Gordon. but I think he deliberately incorporated Chinese music element/style to those tracks. Not only traditional authentic Chinese instrument (distinct from other Oriental variations) but also the chord/music note used (They sounds very Chinese not just generic Oriental feeling music). That is why many Chinese figure skatings fans felt the immediate connection.

Also. shout out to Roman:luv17: always loved my BOI Roman and Nathan BOI (his BOI).

Also, Nathan BOI, it is official from Raf, "GOOD BOI"

Seriously can't get over how cute and boyish his chuckle sounds in the end there, kinda similar to when he was watching his old Lion King program. :)

I find it interesting, that when Raf kind of bursts out and exclaims something, he does it in english... ;)

I was wondering, do Nathan and Raf have a kind of ritual at the boards, right before Nathan competes?
Because I noticed that, while I've seen Raf with Ashley and Adam giving them some last minute advice/pep talk, I've never actually seen footage like that of Nathan...
Maybe it's simply coincidence, that it just never made it into any broadcast, or maybe he's the type that doesn't like being talked to right before/finds it distracting?
