Proposal to raise minimum age rejected

Bad news.:(

I agreed with the proposal and am sad it was rejected.

Then again, I think that a great skater at 14 or 15 should be a great skater at 16 or 17, otherwise they're not a great skater.:disapp:

Also sad to see parliamentary manouevers used, rather than an up and down vote.

Fantastic news.

Fortunately, the ruination of figure skating will not arrive yet.

this proposal has ages of been active, pretty sure next congress will be there again, next time with better reasons.

did anyone else read this far down the article?

"An urgent proposal preventing federation presidents from judging major international events was removed from the agenda after it did not reach the necessary majority."

lol of course it didn't.

I saw that earlier today. I just hope they publish who voted for and against it

I had a big comment that I forgot to post in the "Should minimum age for seniors be raised?"... the TL;DR of it is that I don't think a higher minimum age would have been good in the past but it could be ok in the future if done right. I don't think raising it to 16 would be a big deal but I think 17 is a leap too far without other big changes.

With the age at 17, neither Lepinski or Kwan would have been eligible in 1998. Despite the belly aching I've seen about ladies skating lately, the grand prix's from 2014-17 were far more interesting IMO than the 2010-2013 and the lower age contributed to that.

When you raise the age to 17, you're going to have too much talent at juniors... there will be too much wondering why such and such skater isn't in senior. It's also much harder for a skater/coach to think 4 years ahead of time in comparison to 2-3 years. It would also exacerbate the dominance of Russia/Japan at the junior level(every JGPF qualifer from this past quad came from those two countries) which I imagine some skaters from other countries might find discouraging.

Setting the age at 17 isn't going to do anything for health by itself. If that's the reason to raise the age then just go ahead and set technical limits. I would kind of like junior ladies to be forced to do spirals as a way to get them to focus on something besides jumps... and the ability to do a good spiral is usually reflected in both skating in presentation.

I can support an age of 17 IF:
At a minimum, all those 17+ women on the grand prix are attempting triple-triples. It would be important that raising the age would not compromise a competition field having a high technical base.
More attention is brought to junior worlds. Like broadcasting the winner or all medalists during the senior championship. It would be nice if the junior events were located where some audience will show up(Japan, Russia, Australia, Spain going from my memory... Austria had a few people show IIRC)
Let the 15 year olds skate in the challenger series.
Let the 15 year olds skate in the Olympic team event
Let there be two junior divisions for the junior grand prix final... run the junior grand prix events normally, but have two groups of qualifiers for 13-14 year olds and then 15+ skaters for the final. Doing this would allow more countries to skate in the junior grand prix final.

I think part of the push to raise the age is the concern of skating getting too technical oriented... I think one way to address this is if we get to the point where you need a 3A or quad to win a worlds medal in ladies and a quad in men's(already there) then there should be a medal for the best ladies program without a quad/3a and a medal for the best men's program without a quad.

I'm not sure about the whole "idol" talk... but I do think raising the age to 17(or 16) could potentially make figure skating more sponsor friendly. And by sponsor friendly I mean less variation in who is winning because sponsors like those who are at least constantly competitive at the top. The ISU can't compete with the WTA's prize money, but figure skating is still able to garner quite a bit of attention. There are only about 7 WTA players total that have more instagram followers than Zagitova and Medvedeva. Raising the age could potentially make winning more valuable to whoever wins.

I think the "idol" may be a thing of the past... it's mostly important to just put on good events and to do that constantly you need to do a better job building a mass of talent. Both the US and Europe need better competitive systems for novices.

I just want to point out that starting in the 2014-15 season that the age limit to skate in the grand prix was raised to 15... and I think that was a good rule that made the juniors more interesting.

And again, I don't think raising the age to 16 would be a big deal but 17 is too much without making some changes.

Russia, whose 15-year-old figure skater Alina Zagitova is the reigning Olympic champion after she struck gold at Pyeongchang 2018, and Japan were among the countries to vote no.
The United States, Germany, Finland, Italy, Sweden and Ukraine all voted in favour of keeping the proposal, sent by The Netherlands, on the agenda.

It was obvious from the start it had nothing to do with the skaters' interests or the sport itself, but an initiative of the weak to push their own agenda and administratively elevate themselves.
How did Canada vote? I assume they should vote for the proposal, as that would give Kaetlyn an edge...

Was it just for ladies, or for men too? Because I would think Canada will want Stephen Gogolev to be Sr-eligible as soon as possible. So I'm not sure which way they would vote.

to get 63 and 15 you need to count as 2 votes the nations without separate branches for Speed and Figure.

The screenshot with the "No" votes wasn't shown during the livestream but by deduction the rest voted no apart those absent.

Abstentions is actually like voting "no" in this type of vote as the 4/5 quorum is calculated adding up all these voting including the abstentions.

Every big fed voted against it apart from USA. Which honestly is puzzling, because of Alysa Liu.

edit: Oh, didn't notice the huge list above.

So Korea voted against new age limit?

They have whole tsunami of young upcomings talents! :cheer2:
