A PB for Gorshkova and Butikov as well! They are behind Emily and Evan on the OD, but ahead overall.

Why does the senior grand prix final not have a compulsory dance while the Junior grand prix final does?

I have no idea. I wish the GP had a CD as well, as all the GP events have it.

Not their personal best, but very close....

Interesting results. 3 points between 1st and 3rd, 10 between 3rd and 4th and then 4 between 5th and 8th. I think the top three is going to stay the same. Even if Crone and Poirier beat one or two teams in the FD, I think it's going to be too much of a difference to make up.

Overall:
1 Maria MONKO / Ilia TKACHENKO RUS 90.23 1 1
2 Kristina GORSHKOVA / Vitali BUTIKOV RUS 88.33 2 3
3 Emily SAMUELSON / Evan BATES USA 87.36 3 2

:scratch:What hapenned to Crone/Poirier? Are they having a bad competition, or are they just not as strong as their JGP scores would lead one to believe? I knwo the Cha Cha is a weaker dance for them, but I expected them to be higher after the OD. I know the FD has been significantly stronger than the other two portions for them this season, but the 10 point gap between them and third place is going to be pretty impossible to close. I have them pegged to battle for gold, and now t seems that the podium is out of reach for them. I hope they knock the field dead with their FD, even though it won't win them a medal.

As for pairs, does anyone know if Velenosi/Fernandez made any mistakes? And wow, there were NO deductions in the men's SP. It's amazing that there were no falls at all.

How do you know there aren't more than 11? Switching countries doesn't change the way you were brought up?
I didn't look at the names, but just going by country, there seem to be about 18 that have "skating ties" to the former Soviet Union (Israel, for instance). I'm not sure about countries like Poland and the Balkan States)
...and how many Japanese judges are in the mix just by the luck of the draw?
Hmmm. Looks like the Japanese Federation got lucky four times in a row. I think I'll start a thread on the Edge about this and see if anyone can shed more light on the selection process for judges' panels.

Ladies: I realize it's not over yet, but looking ahead to U.S. Nationals, Mirai clobbered Rachael by 7 points in the SP. Mirai's SP total is way up on the list of all-time bests for seniors.

Now I'm thinking that a U.S. Nats podium of Meissner, Zhang, and Nagasu, not necessarily in that order, is not out of the question.

It's been reported too that Mirai had a small stumble on one of her spins which resulted in a level 1 - imagine how high her score would've been without that stumble.

Woah. I predicted she was going to win fairly easily but I didn't think it would be this easy. Of course...it ain't over yet.

Here's the ISU recap article with skater quotes:

For the lazy, here's the answer to some of our questions:
Ladies:
Mirai stumbled in her flying sit spin, and that's why she ended up with a level one in the element.
Flatt's triple-triple was downgraded
Vähämaa stepped out of her triple loop and singled the double axel.

Dance:
Samuelson & Bates "appeared stiff" in the compulsory dance.
Both Samuelson & Bates and Monko & Tkachenko got level 4 for all their elements.
Gorshkova & Butikov got all level 4 and one level 3 (serpentine lift)
Chock fell during the circular step sequence.

Pairs:
Bazarova and Larionov got level 3s for their step sequence, level 4 four their spins, but only level 1 for the deathspiral.
On the contrary, Krasilnikova & Bezmaternikh got a level 4 for their death spiral, but level 1 for spins and steps.
Kuznetsov was injured, and he and Sheremetieva only started training again last week. They are hoping to hang on to a podium spot. Kudos to them for their effort.
Both Paetsch and Nuss struggled with their double axels.
Velenosi fell on the triple toe loop.

Men:
Mroz and Guan did the same jumps - triple lutz - triple toe , double axel and triple loop, but Mroz got higher levels in spins and footwork. Guan only had a level 1 in his footwork.
Rippon had 2 level 4 spins. His jump combo was a triple flip-triple toe.
Gachinski did the only triple axel of the evening.
Mahbanoozadeh had 3 level 4 spins.

Without the CD, there will be no truly honest way of comparing truly technical scores, imo.

What will be left could be a vote in favor of a truly original dance and for the FD

A decision of the judges to which dance was most entertaining: The Turmoils of Tosca? or the effervescent Die Fledermaus?
