2011-2012 Program Stuff

Ashely will make a fantastic Odile (Black Swan). She is not particularly balletic in skating style but has the fire and speed and seduction required of that character. I can't see Miki pulling it off quite so well.

Tomas's hip hop Carmina Burana sounds like another hot mess although the LP will probably be a great program for him(didn't he already use Sing Sing Sing though?)

really odd that Kira is doing the same SP as Tomas. I can't see her doing hip hop anything for the life of me.

and god another warhorse for the american pairs.

Seriously, hip hop Carmina Burana? I thought it was going to be regular Carmina Burana, but this hip hop thing will be.. interesting.

:)Off on a side track , here are perhaps the most celebrated swan arms in ballet.. Maya Plisetskaya performing the Dying Swan in 1959 ; dancing begins at 1:47

and again , AT AGE 61 !!!

She was also a celebrated Odile ;

Wow, i thought Maya was better at 61 than when she was young. What a beautiful testament to her art.

Another great swan, the great Uliana

Odile is the epitome of Classical Ballet in the Virtuoso form. Odette is the standard sugary form of classical ballet . Both Odette and Odile should have partners. Four minutes of grimacing on ice just doesn't do it. Perhaps we'll see it in Pairs or Ice Dance some day.

I've watch Plisetskaya dance many times including the Alsonso suite of Carmen. She had an innovative approach to every thing she did. Most remarkable. That would be interesting for a figue skater to bring their swans to another level and not just aping ballet.

 Joe.. you may like this..Marie-Claude Savard-Ganon & Luc Bradet 1997 Canadian Champions. It illustrated a point you've made often ( and one I agree with ) just because one uses ballet music , doesn't mean one always has to try to copy the ballet ...Swan lake , Act III ; Black Swan Pas de Deux :

I was one of those on my feet screaming and bruising my hands clapping..( I think I bent my ring and had a heck of a time getting it off )...

Will Ashley skate to Black Swan ost or Black Swan Pas de Deux? If she skate to the ost then she doesn't have to be balletic or have ballet like figure at all in my opinion. She just need power and speed which to be able to portrait Nina journey to madness.

They were a team of skaters who interpreted beautiful figure skating and not faux ballet skating. I liked the performance very much. Are they still skating?

IMO, Lepisto has the best stroking in the whole of Figure Skating. She covers the ice with broad strokes without the huff and puff of getting speed. Speed is already in the broad stroking as does Yuka Sato who also had it. Some skaters have it for a short period of their program but Laura and Yuka maintain the quiet musical speed throughout their entire programs. It's what makes figure skating unique in the dance world.

I think Lepisto's stroking is soft and efortless, but I prefer Kostner's speed and power. She can just skate around without doing jumps or steps or whatever and it will still be beautiful and breathetaking. I also like Yuna. And Sotnikova's stroking is just excellent, especially for 14 y.o.

Back to the topic, seems like Ksenia Makarova's new FS is selection of songs including "Diamonds are the girls best friends" and "I wanna be loved by you"

Like those choices for her. She is a diva and likes to show her fun side.

If she can pull it off, that will be a terrific program. Big "if," though. There was only one MM (and I don't mean Mathman!).

First it was Takahashi's hip hop swan lake and now hip hop Carmina Burana...not sure how I feel about this.

Well Takahashi had the showmanship to pull it off (not to mention that he went to NY to get hip-hop dancing lessons in preparation).

Not sure if Tomas has the personality, nor whether he'll actually put the effort into pulling it off.

I have to admit that I saw Takahashi's hip hop swan lake in person at Skate America that year and it was an amazing program! But you are correct, I am not sure that Thomas can pull it off.
