2014 Nebelhorn Trophy

What is the "sprinkler"?

Eeeerm... what's the sprinkler? Never knew a move was called like that

Count me in the WTH class with the sprinkler! The move was developed in the 1970s, so there's NO reason for it to be in a program to 1950s Chicago blues music...

THe program on the whole is fine to me, there's some really nice moments..but yeah, that part where he hams it up and the sprinkler dance is a bit much.

I see no problem with it. :p overall Jason's SP is fine, not my taste, though. I enjoyed his Lp much better.

 Thanks a lot of the videos Newbiespectator and Mrs.P!

I don't know... I actually think it's kinda cute. I probably exposed myself as weird now, but oh well

You're right! Never thought about that... So we have even an "intellectual" point against the sprinkler

Just got home and have to say it was a great event with great people. A couple of articles you already got and I still have so much to tell and will post my column tomorrow. Its almost 10 PM now and I was stuck in the train like forever :D

On Tuesday I already leave for the JGP ^^ so there is no time to waste and I will try my best to give you all a nice read once its online. I have already written a few pages in the train

If you don't get an answer about the deductions I will know whom to ask and will do so at the JGP and then give you the reason for it.
This thread has been terrific.

Thanks esp. to sequins for your play by play; to Mrs. P for information and analysis; .... and to Alex for EVERYTHING.

You are welcome, I am trying my best ;)

Thanks for the reports and all the info Alex! It is very appreciated

OK, I'm on the other side. I *like* what everyone is calling the sprinkler. And here's why.

It's NOT "the sprinkler".

I think we need to lift ourselves a little out of our own cultural milieu and return to the blues dancing of the 40s,(no, I wasn't around then. The spousal unit was born in 49, does that count?)

The entire program seems to me patterned after the "look at me" solo blues dancing of the 40s. It does trouble me that so many are willing to see this a some sort of 80s dance move rather than a play on the shake blues dancing of the 40s. I hope the same sort of cultural presuppositions don't hurt Jason in future competitions.

I appreciate the insight here and that is why I asked. I watched all of Sandra Gibson and skimmed thru the second video and I agree that Jason does a good job representing this style of blues dancing. To be clear I was only asking about just that one brief moment at....1:45 to 1:47 ( http://youtu.be/O9S4KASw3Lg ) and not the entire interpretation he does.

Its true he only goes to one side with it and doesnt return as maybe a true sprinkler would as described in the how to video. So maybe you have convinced me that it isnt a sprinkler. Anyway...thanks a million because now I can view it in a whole different light.

Jason brown is soon going to be breaking records for pcs. His gigantic pcs margins in nebelhorn shows the judges love all he is doing. More sprinklers to come and make him more the pcs king of men's skating.

Thanks for this! As I said I thought the program on the whole is fine and I think judges think it's fine too. I mean he did get 40+ PCS, which I'd pretty good for this point in the season.

But I do think he can probably still tone down the ham. The rest of the program he shows much more mature movement and then suddenly bam, here comes comic Jason! That is probably why people mistook that as the sprinkler. I mean if he did it like the lady in the first video...well...

But again I think overall, as Sam said, he does the blues dance style just fine.

Oh boy. I think I'm seeing a glimpse of what's going to happen with some fandoms in the next 4 years.

What are you talking about? El Henry provided a valid response to a question and it's been fun actually to discuss this...

Unless you are referring to something else..

Interesting. One of the reasons I feel like Jason's SP isn't quite working is that there's no trace of the "I'm growing up" sensuality he brought to the Prince SP - and some of the "look at me" moves in Juke really demand it. Maybe he just hasn't gotten there yet because it's new, but right now, I sorta feel like I'm watching the kid who did this:

Yes, Mrs. P and Sam-Skwantch, I hope you did not take offense, I have learned so much re-acclimating myself to figure skating from you and these fora. But it appeared that I was in the distinct minority in liking the music from the start, so I at least wanted to see if there was something other than the Sprinkler (which I admit, now that I know what it is, Jason's move resembles) which could explain the moves for others. And if the Sandra Gibson vid was steamy, that same channel had one from a man that made Plushy and Sex Bomb look tame. I'm quite glad Jason didn't go that route:eek:

And more cat avatars :agree:

I think it's adorable and hammy and in-character with the rest of the program. :p
