2014 Nebelhorn Trophy

Liza is back! :D So happy for her. It's hard to believe she's 17, because on the ice I saw woman not a teenage girl.

I'm glad for Tuk. She was so good and seems to have made a successful recovery from her injury.

Gracie should change her name to Gracie Bronze or Gracie Off-The-Podium. Because this girl will never be a contender on the world stage. She can’t even beat the Russian B team at a Senior B event. She just doesn’t have the skill or competitive mindset. That much is obvious by now.

Carroll and Nichol have transformed her into a pageanty princess. But, no matter how much they try to force her into that style of skating, she isn’t graceful and her presentation doesn’t come across as natural.

I don’t think they are the right fit for her. She still has no jump consistency and her jump quality has declined dramatically to the point where her jumps are poor quality elements. When I watch her jump, I can’t believe I’m watching the same girl I watched in the 2011-2012 season. She has no height/power on her jumps anymore and the landings are so hard.

So in love with Liza's LP this season!! It suits her so well. the costume looks really nice. The only setback is her SP and LP's costumes are so alike. :bang:

What I loved about Liza's program is that you could actually see her gaining confidence as the program went by. Started with a bit shaky 3Lz, doubled the flip, but after the 3-3 combo she was on fire and her jumps once again had the quality you would expect from her.
This is a very important step for her this season, she needs to build on this performance to gain her reputation back. She does have the advantage that she regained her jumps after puberty hit while her other main rivals are still to do so. (except Adelina).

No medal ceremony? Hitherto they've held them directly after the free ended, that's why I find it curious.

yes, the worst has passed for Liza now IMO. The puberty monster has gone. I am so happy. Her LP is so strong and what a fit for her.

Congrats Liza! I would not say she is totally back, as she did not perform a flawless skate, but her fighting attitude was there. When she made a mistake on the opening 3Lz (mostly because of the delay of the music at the beginning of her program, I think), she did not crumble but continue to skate with fierce. Bravo!!!

I think her SP is good. But the LP... Nichol should stop copying and pasting the princess model to every one. Not everyone can be Mao Asada.

Disagree on both statements. First of all, it's the START of the season, no need to be dramatic. Adelina started slow too last year and progressed throughout the season. Second, Liza was NEVER considered B-competition. Last year she dealt with injuries, puberty and so on...Many people considered her a Sochi participant if not a contender before that.

I agree. Adelina had a poor start to her season and won Olympic gold. I think Gracie has several issues that need to be worked out though. Her 3-3 is supposed to be her meal ticket and she missed it twice. At least her axels were landed even if they're not the best quality. It's too early to hit the panic button yet though. Skate America will given her a huge home advantage... But interesting that she will square off against Radionova (who's solid) and Tuktamysheva who just beat her by 10 points. And there's Park too.

I'm impressed with Leonova and Tukt... Many people wrote them off and now they've both soundly beaten Gold.

Given how Polina has skated, I wonder if people are still so resolute in Gracie being undoubtedly the US #1.

I absolutely love Tuktamysheva's free skate, and she seems to love it too. Especially that she is skating to the wonderful Sandstorm. I've not heard that music used since Jill Trenary skated to it back in 1990.

Liza certainly has her own powerhouse style, that's for sure.

While I appreciated both the Russian comebacks a lot, with better style and better strategy for both Alena and Liza (but move that 3-3 to the second half please!!), I didn't really like Gracie at all. The gracious princess music doesn't suit her at all, and despite the highest PCS I didn't enjoy her performance at all, she looked so tense and nervous throughout the program and didn't sell it

I would rather put Gracie into cold dramatic characters like vampire or something like that  I think that she would be great as cold characters. Princess doesn't suit her

Thank you Koatcue.... It's the the beginning of the season and it's like people think they have a crystal ball to predict what the future competitive career of any of these skaters will be like. The way I look at it... We are at the beginning a new generation and another 4 year cycle before another olympics. All people can do right now is sit back and see how the next quad pans out.

Gracie might very well step it up throughout the season and land on the worlds podium, true. It's just the beginning of the season. But last season she started with boring programs, little interpretation and boring performances and that's how she ended the season too (plus she still had mistakes at the end of the season, she never skated like Adelina did at Olympics or even Euros).
Besides, with what looks like 20+ POTO programs this season, I think I'll turn Gracie pwetty princess Christie something into my first toilet break.

It's the start of the season for every athlete, not just Gracie. And it's not like people think they have a crystal ball, it's called personal opinion and personal predictions BASED ON Gracie's performance last year and start of this year.
Tick tock, Gracie, Polina is coming. (I don't like them both tbh )

I only watched Gracie and Liza's long programs, so I'll just respond on how I felt about their actual programs and not the result.

Gracie (copy and pasted from another thread):
There are some beautiful moments in the program. With that being said, she is still skating through the music and not to the music. The arm flailing is also a bit much. I'm not sure if I like her dress or the vocals in the program, but I'm sure they'll grow on me over time. With a bit of tweaking, there's room for growth and potential.

Liza
I'm happy that she skated well. She was my favorite up and coming Russian skater back when she and Adelina first came on the scene. With that being said, her program is a bit lacking in transitions. For the first half of the program she just went from jump to jump. No connecting elements or choreography. I think her styling is poor and they should re-think the dress and hair, but I'm glad she had what turned into a great skate toward the end.

Sigh... Like I said Snow63, lets just see how the rest of this season and future seasons pan out. You are entitled to your opinion like I am.
