2014 Olympics Ladies Free Skate

that was one of the most moving performances ever. She skated so freely. She just let go and did her thing. Amazing. I thought she deserved the bronze. If the judging wasn't corrupt she might've.

I thought Yu-Na kept her disappointment together very well in the Kiss & Cry, although it was awkward when she stood up to wave at the audience, which was cheering because Adelina had won gold, which Yu-Na realized soon after. The audience, for the most part, was unbelievably disgusting.

Yu-Na was pretty poised on the podium, and I thought she was gracious and hid any sad feelings well. I heard she was emotional when coming off the ice, but none of us know what went through her head--is it because this was her last competition of her career? Is it because she "only" won the silver? I don't know.

In the Kiss&Cry she kind of tried to hide it but you could see she was disappointed and not happy. On the podium, she had this very clearly forced and fake smile. As in only her mouth smiled and not the rest of her face and her eyes were telling a different story.

I've taken a course in 'observation and diagnosis' as part of a psychology degree. ;)

Also from Brennan (USA Today columnist):

One more judging note: the RUS judge, Alla Shekhovtseva, is married to the RUS skating federation president. I am not making this up.

It is just outrageous. She’s also been judging for so many years!

This sport needs a MAJOR ethics overhaul and new leadership.

Basically, back-room pressure goes like this: Putin says to Rus federation president: it would be nice
if one of our girls gets gold. He passes that on to his people, including Lakernik, and his wife.

Done!

Some are saying Mao should have been placed above Gracie and Julia. Sorry, but Mao lost it in the short program and also I believe the tech judges were pretty generous with some of her jumps.
And Gracie and Julia lost it in the long with programs that were inferior even when clean anyway. Julia lost it in the short, too, but got propped up like a baby in a high chair. The tech judges were certainly not generous to Mao considering they unfairly dinged her 3F-3Lo. Unless you're talking about the SP where her jumps earned 7 points total. No real generosity there.

YuNa didnt lose. Russia Win. Robin Cousins and Kurt Browning said Yuna is a true Champion.
and also Dick Button who have been criticizing YuNa.

Don't lump me in with your kind. It's apples and oranges.
Yes, and the numbers were inflated for ALL Russian skaters. As they were at Cup of Russia. Don't pretend like Russians didn't get some gifts. Adelina should have won a medal with those skates, but the scores were ridiculous, and had it been skated in a country besides Russia, she wouldn't have gotten that PCS, nor the gold.

Yulia was overscored in the short.

The Russian crowd was so poor. You can be nationalistic and enthusiastic for your own, but when you start cheering at mistakes, you're doing it wrong. You respect ALL skaters, not just the ones from your own country. Just such a disappointing Olympics, all around.

No, Nater, you base your arguments on your infinite pretensions and your insanely inflated opinion of yourself and your reasoning skills. The rest of us base our arguments not only on number crunching (ever heard of how easily manipulated statistics are? I didn't think so) but on the criteria of SKATING, including footwork, LINE, flow, edge quality, and so forth, ad infinitum. it is not a JUMPING nor a JUMPING AND SPINNING competition. For any sort of an elite skater, much less an Olympic medalist, Sotnikova's posture SUCKS, her shoulders are slumped and rounded, she tenses before every trick, she is OFF THE MUSIC most of the time, she is unmusical in addition to her lack of rhythm, and her feet/foot placements are abominable. Get over your pretensions and your desire to pontificate to the rest of this board!

Did it include mind-reading? :P

It was a really, really hostile environment. Fake smile or not, it was a smile, and I think that was remarkable given the circumstances.

Yuna still got the highest PCS
though I agree Mao was underscored

probably because she skated in the earlier group

Yeah. my mistake. I am just disgusted at this home cooked judging.

I was really really impressed with Mao's performance.

Beautiful lines, choreography overall.

The russian skaters to me seemed a bit rough on the edges.

She's already given a post-competition interview and she had nothing negative to say whatsoever.

When her performance was over and she was coming off the ice, she looked like she was about to go cry lots. I think it's because her career was over though, and it finally hit her.

good post. you get it.

You are so biased I can't buy your reasons. I think her program was great, condensed and entertaining to watch. Andelina really did better than Kim Yuna with her FS. Her TES is worthy of it.
I would say I agree that her scores are too high, it should not be that high, if it were me, I would give her 145 at most. But It was really a fun to watch her, I feel joy, freshness and fierceness in all her moves. If bringing us emotions could not be counted as artistry, then what could be?
The thing is, I did feel a lot when I watched Adelia's yesterday and today's performance. While I don't feel much joy watching Kim Yuna anymore, it's not that Kim is not great, it's just I feel flat with both Kim's programs. My friend also shared the thought. The feelings are subtle but we both think Adelina deserve to win. It's just her score shouldn't be that hight, though.
Btw I and my friend are not Russian nor Japanese, not even America. I do believe my point of view is neutral enough.

Yuna and Carolina had sophisticated programs. What is great about Adelina's program? Yuna, Carolina and Adelina had the jumps but there are other parts of skating as well.

In 1996, Michelle Kwan defeated Chen Lu at the World Championships. I though Lulu was more artistic however Michelle's program had one more triple but I was fine with it because Michelle was artistic as well. Sonitkova on the other hand has mediocre foot work, stiff landings and a lack of musicality. Why are there component marks and GOE's and the PCS scores suddenly high? Adelina never had scores like these even when she skated well and Yuna never had such low marks when she skated cleanly. I would like to see what happens at the Worlds next month.

I think a lot of the dislike for the result here comes down to the way the sport is structured these days. Yu-Na Kim has the potential to blow Sotnikova away in terms of artistry and deserve to win on the second mark, but the system simply doesn't allow her to breathe and create those moments. Too much time and energy is required for the spins and footwork (and unnecessary 3-jump combinations).

You can see that exact effect in Kostner's performance. If you watch her at Europeans, she made a lot of mistakes but the program was more intricate and far more engrossing. At the Olympics she skated her best ever technically, but that's because she held off on the performance and choreography to focus on the technical aspects.

Basically, the system is a lose-lose because real artistry is never rewarded anymore and the scores can be manipulated anyway.

Adelina Sotnikova

2013 World Championship -Finishes 9th with a score of 175.98
2013 GPF - Finishes 5th with a score of 173.30

2014 SOCHI Olympics - Finishes 1(???)st with 224.59

Her score jumped over 51.29 points in last 2 months. BRAVO Russia.

You guys are HILARIOUS!! I find all of the complaining about scores so funny, I really do...this is figure skating people. What did you expect? Fair results? Go watch an actual sport if you want fair indisputable quantifiable results...

Say what you will but I've always been a fan of Adelina. I do think she still needs polish but she delivered. She skated with fire and energy, attacked everything and had a truly great Olympic moment. Of course the scores were inflated but, you know what? I'm fine with her winning. In an Olympic setting it's all about what you do in that moment...and she seized that moment. I can be nothing but happy for her.

If I'd had my way, I'd have had Carolina 1st, Yu-Na a very narrow 2nd and Adelina 3rd...but I'm fine with the results as is. Carolina had her Olympic moment and earned an Olympic medal; Yu-Na delivered under pressure (yet again) and walked away with another Olympic medal; and Adelina held up under the pressure and skated her heart out...and Mao! Talk about an Olympic moment! The most emotional performance of the night!

B**** and moan about the scores, but you can't deny this event had some amazing skating...

I love Adelina, and I believe in her future. However, she is not a winner in Sochi. But she did her best and I stand clapping for Adelina, yet I feel sad to find her in this mess. This is an outright fraud.
