2014 Olympics Ladies Free Skate

^^^All of that = skating well in front of a home crowd at the Olympics.

Here's a question: what if it had been Julia who had the two lights-out performances and won gold? Would the reaction be better? Just as bad? Worse?
It would have been WAY better. Julia was so hyped because she has something no other skater does---exquisite spins/spirals. She was like Sasha Cohen without the hot mess. It also would have been better if it were Mao Asada, or if Costner upped her TES.

Ashley Wagner slams Olympic figure skating judges, calls for change
By Martin Rogers
3 hours ago-Yahoo Sports

Ashley Wagner has a big mouth and craves attention. How far do she think she is going with this and where is she going with it? Her big mouth will get her in trouble and her chances of ever medaling again will be remote. She calls for changes....who in the hell do she think she is!!! The problem with her is that she figured that she was going to get the gold. This girl has a giant head and I don't know who she thinks she has power.

If Adelina continues in the sport I think she will continue to do well because she's exceptionally talented. I think Adelina has always been underrated to be honest so I'm neither surprised or outraged at this result. I am a bit surprised she was able to put together two solid programmes in Sochi though. She never gave me confidence she would hit. Maybe this year's media love fest over Julia helped her.

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I just wanted to share my thrill for one of the best skated ladies FS competition in olympic history. I am having hard time choosing the winner to be honest. My sentimental winner would be Carolina. But I have no problems with placements overall.
But I am also puzzled by some of the comments here. So the only reason Adelina should not have won is that she by definition could not have PCS at the same level as Kim, Carolina, or Mao. In fact she should be 6 points below?
Well then my next question is why do we need to have this competition if from the starting point she can skate lights out but still she, or anyone else not named Kim, Mao or Carolina, would never win against the three?
It does not make sense to me. Or can somebody explain to me what would one need to do to win against the triumvirate, hope for them to fall? wait for them to retire? Or maybe have segregate the contenders into categories from the start based on their PCS abilities?
I am just curious.

Oh give it a break. Ashley Wagner is outspoken but she has mirrored every word that has been said in this thread. She's not wrong, and she's not saying she was robbed of a medal. She KNEW she wouldn't get one, but she felt her experienced was "Gypped" b/c of the unfair scoring. I'm sure a lot of other skaters feel the same.

Wow. After I saw Yuna skate I thought for sure there was NO WAY she couldn't be Gold. Well, I should've remembered that inflated skater was Russian.

I don't know what to say about anything that went on these last two days, it was craziness.

I just have one thought though: Julia skates very well, has never fallen to the ice in three years of international competition, skated medal-winning programs in the team event with enormous pressure. Then she has to skate first after the warm-up, (for the first time ever?) and has a fall in her short program, then she has to skate first after the warm-up in the long program and has another fall. Anyone else think this is more than a coincidence.

Pathetic. The judging was just downright pathetic. Yu-Na skated magnificently and perfectly, every element was beautiful and the overall composition was stupendous. Caro delivered a lively and perfectly choreographed program with a sense of artistry that is unparalleled in the sport today. And Mao's clean performance just confirms her as one of the greats of the sport today. She landed all the triples including the axel and although her toe may have been underrotated (I dont agree with the UR actually), she was magnificent. Adelina, on the other hand, was overscored like crazy and should have finished fourth in the FS, behind the three I mentioned. Her skating skills, choreography, and interpretation were obviously worse than all three, and I cannot comprehend how she got higher PCS than Mao and Caro.
Mr Detailed Scoring for the FS(how I would have scored):
1. Mao
1. 3A 8.50+0.43=8.93 (maybe a little UR, but not 1/4)
2. 3F+3Lo 10.40+0.00=10.40 (also debatable, but I dont think the Lo was 1/4 revolution UR)
3. 3Lz e 6.00-0.40=5.60
4. CCoSp4 3.50+0.50=4.00
5. FCSp4 3.20+0.50=3.70
6. 2A+3T* 8.14+1.00=9.14 (I dont think the 3T was UR at all, and the combo was well executed.)

It's because Adelina is not on the same level with Yuna, Carolina and Mao or Akiko for that matter in terms of skating. She just isn't. The way she moves across the ice is clumsy and there is no fluidity to her edges. And also the way she moves her body as she's skating is also awkward. I thought Polina Edmund was better than Adelina in terms of moving across the ice.

Adelina managed to jump big and her spin positions are quite extraordinary.

Irina 2.0

I haven't had a chance to watch the programs with a super critical eye yet, but I am really proud of Adelina. I was literally screaming at every single jump she landed. I didn't really become a fan of hers until this season when she started to get to get her act together, but great job to her! I wish her Yuna, and Caro could have all gotten gold because they were all amazing!

I'll just say this

The fact that someone who skates so immaturely with little grace or passion as Sotnikova got OGM today is an insult to sport itself,
all the fine athletes who have competed in it, and for all other skaters who are currently training to become their best

Way to go Russia. You are a disgrace to the word Olympics

That was not my point. I was asking if all what you are saying is in fact true does it mean that by default she can not win already going into competition?

She should not win with such a high margin of pts if her skating is subpar to her competitors.

Does anyone know where to find a video of Yu na kim's performance. I was nervous the first time and thought it was brilliant, but I want to see it again so I can better evaluate it.

First bring your definition of light out performance, and analyze what merits, comparatively, do that "light out performance" has competitively? If you suggests skaters who didn't skate clean before skate the so called "light out perf" and that constitutes merits that put him or her in the lead of the lot, I suggests take time to watch how others skate and perform without the "lights out perf", then you will sometimes be surprise at the fact that your the "light-out" only be self-delusion and not even close to others' imperfect perf. Then you begin to realize there is level, degree, qualities, and comprehensive realm of figure skating. then you will know the "light-out" is like a 3 person boat which is not qualified to sail the ocean, even if good enough to travel your house pool.
