2014 Olympics Ladies Free Skate

3) Polina. Amazing! Better skate than Nationals, even with her fall. She is so incredibly musical, has great flow in and out of her jumps. In a way, she reminds me of a young Carolina. It was hard to tell how her speed, etc. matched with the others, but she has a great future, I think.

As someone that was at Nationals, ITA about Polina. I have to be honest that I was not enthralled by her FS, but I really enjoyed her in Sochi, even with the error. She truly looked like she belonged in the senior ranks.

Looking forward to seeing her grow.

I'm really not getting all this drama, the three ladies who made the podium all deserve their medals. Just because Yuna Kim wanted to compete again at these winter games does not mean she was the only one "entitled" to win a gold medal. There is no such rule in figure skating. Adelina had the most technical content, including better spins, give her some credit please. Carolina seems content winning the bronze and has been nothing but a class act. Gracie and Mao deserve kudos as well.

Watched FS again. Choreography of gold medalist is the worst of all leaders including Yulia.
No wonder Russia did a stake on other girl.
Gee, what a shame, that ugly choreography's got more than Mao's, Yuna's and Caro's ones.

In the interview Yuna sounded a lot like Lu Chen did when her country forced her to compete when she didn't want to. It was almost like she didn't give a hoot. Basically said I'm just glad it's over. It doesn't seem like she enjoys training at all anymore and just wants to move on. Korea probably pressured her to come back for those two spots and to win a sureedal for them. That explains why her programs and performance was so muted.

Whatever her feelings, she has been very gracious about the whole thing. Much more so than a lot of her fans. Given all the "OMG if she wins she just has to go for the 3-peat on home ice!" Talk, I kind of wonder if she doesn't see it at least as a bit of a blessing in disguise. I think she is ready to move on. Besides, it's not like she's a Kwan or a Browning who never got their gold. She may feel she should have won, but I don't think she's tearing her hair and rending her garments like some on these boards.

In the beginning I was stunned, but I 've seen those programs at least 4 times, and I came to my own conclusions. Adelina deserved to win, of course with a lower score. Her luck was that 2A3T done extremely well in the second part of the program. Her spins were amazing, second only to Julia. Her program was more complex and skated in great speed. I didn't like her, but this is what happened. Yuna was great, she is the Queen, but she reminded me of great Plushenko. They are not in the same boat, as Plushy is much older and more damaged by a life of great skating. Still Yuna seemed to skate for a different point system. It's a pity, as I think she was capable of more. In a dream world, I'd put Yuna 3rd, give Carolina the silver medal for her easier but stunning program. I am happy that, at least, girls were better than the boys.
WOW, Canada beat USA in men hokey!

Today's Washington Post.

Her component marks were as high as Kim’s, but the idea that Sotnikova is anywhere as close to an artist as Kim is laughable. They are both good, yes, but there are levels of good. One is good in the way you call your grandmother a good dancer because she does the cha-cha slide at the family reunion. The other is a prima ballerina.

Many who defend Sotnikova's win say that she skated her best and had more difficult jumps etc., but that's not the point. The point is the judging. And there I really can't comprehend how someone could really claim that every single of her PCS is in the right proportion compared to Kim, Asada and Kostner.

Technically both SP and FP, the Sotnikova is only 1.42 point higher than YuNa.
Also, In SP Yuna has 3lz-3t but Sotnikova had 3t-3t.
YuNa should have received more GOE on her jumps.

Winning by more triples is not a sound argument here. Mao Asada had a triple axel and seven other triples including great artistry and foot work still scored 8 points lower than Adelina. This is complete bias. There's no way Adelina's PCS can jump 18 points in a month.

Good point.

Sotnikova had 3Lz3T! I don't really like her skating, but please check the protocols before posting!

There is no comparison
They have been getting major marks for their skills and programs many times

This is the only time for her, And the program was showcased a number of times internationally this season.
But all of a sudden at Olympics it's world record caliber

Adelina won this event with PCS and GOE she has never gotten before and likely will never get again (at least for a while), Doesn't matter what her jump layout was.

Seeing her marks and assuming Lipnitskaya would've been around the same,
It's obvious the other ladies never stood a chance in beating them here

Sorry if this has been said already (such a justifiably long thread).

I think it would have been overly generous (and still have required a home country advantage boost) but more reasonable if Adelina had gotten PCS closer to Mao's and Mao had gotten Adelina's PCS. If Adelina still got her crazy high technical score, she would still have gotten gold, but by a less egregious margin (219.86 to Yuna's 219.11). Mao would have won the FS (with 147.44) but only moved up to 5th (with 202.95) from 6th overall. Yuna and Carolina would still have their silver and bronze and Gracie would still have her 4th place.

Overall, I think this event was amazing with skaters really delivering brilliance under intense pressure - it's just the judging that leaves us scratching our heads and gnashing our teeth.

This has been said MULTIPLE times, but Mao had two underrotations and an edge call. So no Mao did not score lower with 8 triples. (Mao would've definitely had a a higher TES than Sotnikova without those URs and e call even with the panel's small GOE marks for her.)

There are plenty of arguments to say Sotnikova shouldn't've won, but the Mao TES argument isn't factual.
