Well, the ability to have a coach at a high level isn't really so open... someone more familiar with the Russian system can probably explain it better but my understanding is that in Russia the coach is pretty much 'responsible for' his or her skaters, and they can choose to stop being responsible for skaters who seem to have no more real potential. So really, it's hard to find a coach as a senior if you don't have high level potential... it's not like in the USA where if you can pay for a coach, no matter how crappy you are, some coach will agree to coach you and you can go to Regionals (assuming you've passed your tests) even if you finish dead last there. So it's not so open because to have a coach at that level is much more selective already in a sense. But if I am talking nonsense or wrong, I truly do hope someone more knowledgable will correct me.
