2015-16 State of Russian Ladies skating

I took evgenia like an example not beacuse she seems particularly young (she is not) but beacuse she is so this. . Well my point wasn't trying to say she is anorexic but only focus aborto the impirtance of eating in a proper way to go trough physical growth in a more armonic way.. I obviously hope everybody is ok =)

I think Elizabet Tursynbaeva is a better example, as while Evgenia kinda has some feminine traits already, Elizabet looks pretty much like an 11-12 years old girl to me...

As in general, I don´t think any of the top russian single skaters has major food issues currently.

I'm not saying that anyone does (hopefully they don't), but it is not always obvious from looking at someone who may have food issues and who does not. Someone can look (or even be) underweight and have perfectly healthy eating habits, and someone can okay while having issues. This is why many times even those close to someone with an issue may not realize what is going on until the situation is particularly advanced.

We've already discussed beauty spurts to death over here ;)

May I change the topic for a bit to the state of former Russian Skaters?

Polina Shelepen has been learning to snowboard and is getting her butter turns down:yay:

Well...she's working on them at least.

Plus she's becoming a pretty good dirt bike rider.

She hasn't left the sport of figure skating though. She's also been working with some pretty good young Russian talents? Hoping the best for her!!

What are some other former skaters up to?

People who met her in person at SA said she (Elizabet) actually looks more like an 8 year old without makeup. Looking at them both in the rink, I thought Elizabet looked much more frail than Evgenia. But I don't think it's right to insinuate anything about her health, or any other skater's. People come in all shapes and sizes. I feel like Evgenia gets singled out because she is Russian and winning everything, but she is certainly not the only thin skater around.

She looks pretty healthy to me here.

+ Imo the boots thingy she sometimes has on ice (& gaiters in that pic) just emphasize the skinnny legs & ppl start to think she's abnormally thin (which she isnt imo)

I actually think she is ok, and that is just her build / growth pattern
But then i wonder why people come here to pick on the russian ladies if they aren't the only ones. Why not make a "are the skaters eating well" thread =)

If Evgenia's ISU bio is accurate, she's currently 10 cm taller than she was when she debuted on the JGP 2 years ago (159 cm vs. 149 cm). A lot of people don't realize this, but if you're seriously malnourished it will effect your vertical growth. My little sister had a malabsorption condition growing up (she was eating enough calorie wise, but due to food allergies she had to take a lot of nutritional supplements and these weren't getting absorbed into her body, so as a result she was malnourished) and between the ages of 10-14 when most kids grow very fast, she not only didn't gain weight but she barely gained height either, maybe 1 cm per year. I know people have also made comments about Sotskova looking emaciated, but she especially has been growing like a weed. Essentially, anyone who is growing 10-15 cm over the course of a couple years would need to have the nutritional intake to support that growth. Between the large amounts of exercise these girls get plus the high metabolisms of teenagers in general, it's very possible that lots of girls are not eating as much as they theoretically need on paper, but there's a big difference between that and being seriously malnourished and/or anorexic. And tiny as Elizabet is I think she too has grown quite a bit in the past year or two.

The fact is more naturally thin ladies become top skaters, and all top ladies are either thin or super thin. Sasha Cohen had been very thin till a number of years after she retired. Even when people were talking about Elena looked anorexia last year, I didn't feel she was. I don't think anyone who is unfit can do a decent LP with half of the jumps in the second half. On the other hand, other skaters who look seemingly healthy by size, such as Zijun Li, don't have the stamina to do jumps in the LP, are more worrisome. And by the way, didn't Yuna mention she could not eat as much bread as she wanted in order to control her weight?

Adrenaline does wonders
:otopic:You probably know Jeanne D´arc? She was anorexic, but fought like a man. #adrenaline :coffee:

Is Jeanne D'arc a figure skater? Is she from Russia?? Is this French for Joan? Why is this here? Is the question or back to the state of Russian skating well imho there are a lot of good skaters but not great. They don't seem to stay on top very long. And they are more girls who are prone and vulnerable to puberty so their shelf life can or may be limited. Who knows if Sotnikova, Lipinskaya, Liza will ever re emerge as stars? And who knows if Rad will survive this growth spurt as she desperately fights for her jumps as she grows.

"desperately fights"? There is nothing even remotely desperate about Elena Radionova in my opinion.

I don't like to post on this forum because people seem to react like football fans about a sport that is more art and they should show more class. But I've been reading here the last 20 pages of comments and I got the feeling that people really wish bad things for russian girls.

I hope the poor girls are not reading it because I would be mortified to be called "ikea figure skater". Like gymnastics, for women, figure skating has a short life. If they are good, they can skate pro for 10 years, maybe more if they are great. (US users should know this from their gymnastics team).

I have mad respect for the japanese girls and the russian ones. Hats off to them and their work. I came here expecting to discuss styles, music, pro and cons in programs. Nobody is commeting here about the skating level they showed at JN yesterday, a very exciting competition. People instead like to talk about jeanne d'arc, anorexia and create grim scenarios about puberty causing the end of the world (sarcasm). Honestly, I've read here more about the effects of puberty, than anywhere :)

Joking, I don't know if some of you are scared/annoyed/angry of them being so good or secretly wish to have the system that forms them.

Rant over:) Lozko has magnificent spins and Konstantinova won my heart with the SP performance. Polina T. performed her best SP of the season. I would love to see a girl (JPN or Rus) do a quad in the next 4 years. Maybe she is the one?

Yes indeed. Watching Russian Junior Nationals and US junior and senior Nationals side by side, it is a huge contrast. What was really amazing is that even the 1st group skaters in yesterday's Russian ladies Junior Nats FS could pull off clean performances that could plausibly land a solid top 10 finish in US seniors. In fact, any girl in that cohort probably has a decent shot at a top 10 placement in Europeans when in form.

And yet in contrast we have US Nats where we wait through two-thirds of the field before we see anyone even landing a clean(ish) 3-3 in the short...

So to change the topic - which of the Russian juniors do you see breaking out in JGP next year? I think it will be hard for Pervushkina, Mihailova, and Mitrofanova to hang on to their JGP slots... ideally the 6 whom I'd like to see are Tsurskaya, Fedichkina, Konstantinova, Nugumanova, Gubanova, and Lozko, with Sotskova definitely and Sakhanovich probably turning senior.

Samodurova, Tarsuina are equally better than some of those girls
these girls placed 6th and 7th respectively

also Konstantinova is eligible for seniors as she turn 16 this year.

Kalee, I'd swap Konstantinova with Samodurova, or possibly Tarusina. Depends on who's skating better next year.

Russia has 15 slots next season, don't they? So they can go with 7girls with 2 events + 1 girl with 1 event. Can't they try few skaters in the early season with one event each and decide who will get two?

I'd love to see Tarusina too. I really liked Lozko but I also feel if she doesn't have 2A+3T at least, maybe other girl with 3-3 deserves a chance. Hope she'll get one by the start of the season.

JGP is good that it has a big number of alternatives to each event. So the Federation decides after Test Skates how they will assign early JGP and then the game begins. If someone fails at their first GP, it is very unlikely she will get a second grand prix this season.
There are too many very talanted girls eligible next season. I actually assume that they will move only Sotskova to Senior next season since Sakhanovich, even if she is back in form, will not get GP spot due to lack of points.
So for next season we have:
Sakhanovich(I think)
Tsurskaya
Fedichkina
Nugumanova
Lozko
Samodurova
Tarusina
Konstantinova
Zagitova
Mitrofanova
Gubanova
Muhkortova
Proklova(still hope she will come back)
+some others

We do not know who improves during the summer, who does not, who will skate clean at Test Skates and some other factors.
The amount of talanted girls is insane. Just imagine: Fedichkina was 8th last season at Junior Nationals with the score 161. Last season 9th place was 154 points, this year 14th place is 154 points.

For me the biggest surprise after junior nationals is that having Gubanova and Nugumanova in international junior competitions next year is not such a big deal after all. Tsurskaya and Fedichkina will stay (hope, no injuries). And who is the third in the team is not that important - she would be more than just good, anyway.

Moreover, Gubanova is very powerful, no doubt. But Alisa Fedichkina has become so good that I do not see what special qualities will Gubanova bring to the table to surpass her. Nugumanova is just too small and she skates too small. If she is not prone to growth I see her becoming "the next Satoko". And I am not a big fan of Satoko.

Then Serafima might recover her jumps. And with her skating skills that are IMO at par with (or at least close to) Adelina's she can easily get the third place in the junior team next year... well, return her place.

Then Tarusina and Konstantinova. They both can develop over the summer to be absolutely competitive vs. top japanese juniors.

Then Sasha Proklova may reappear.

And finally another Alisa - Lozko. She flutzes and she does not have 3-3 yet. Well, Medvedeva, Mao, Adelina and many others flutz. 3-3 might come over the summer. What she has - amazing presence, body control, and spins with fierce power, so gut centered that Lucinda Ruh comes to mind. She has such outstanding personality that I will hope she will become one of kind skater everyone will talk about.

...and I thought that Gubanova and Nugumanova were such a big deal...

To my surprise in FS a lot of girls had problems, falls, some blamed the ice. Anyway, I hope to see at the next season JGP an even better Alisa F, her tech needs more work, artistically she is way above the norm for her age. There is something about Lozko that draws me, her step sequence in the FS was gorgeus, but she need stronger jumps combinations in order to survive in russia :) and let's pray for even better programs.

Samodurova was the big surprise here, I don't think people expected her to place so high. Also I've been in love with Nugumanova and Gubanova for the last two years, so I refuse to belive they won't bring it on at the next JGP. It's crazy to see that Fedichkina was behind Nugumanova and Gubanova at JN in 2015. Lots of things can happen in a year. Polina is for now a sure bet, maybe she needs a different packaging, less juniorish, more mature, not lyrical, but with attack.

I know Proklova is forever injured, but what happened with Shcherbakova and Solovyova?
