It's all good. I was just teasing a little bit. When I was saying Zhenia's FS was the best one for all ladies last season I took a good amount of grief even when including "IMO". I think it's just what we do to each other here

Forgive me but, who is Zhenia?

They all have pet names.

Plush is called "Zhenya" as well.

We pronounce Evgenia with a g sound, not zh. But both Evgeny and Evgenya are commonly shortened into Zhenya. It's just a tradition to shorten names in Russian almost any name. We just know those pet forms. My name is non-Russian, but they commonly shorten it into Faya.
and Elena is Lena usually. Lenok is a further dimunitive.
Russian is a language beriddled with diminutives.

Nope. Evgenia and Zhenia sound different. I suppose it's like Richard=Dick thing. Also there are MANY shortenings in Russia For example, my name is Viktoria=Vika=Vikulya=Vikusya=Vikochka. And this happens to many names.

Good Morning all, I have definitely heard "Masha" as that's what several people in Tennis call Maria Sharapova. Surprisingly, I never heard anyone call Maria Butyrskaya, Masha. I have also heard Sventlana Kuznetsova being called both "Sveta" and "Kuzzy". The name I liked the most is Teymuraz Gabashvili. He's a Tennis Player from Russia and he always says.. "Just call me Tim" in his interviews when the US commentators can't say his real name.

I guess that's why people call Victoria Azarenka, Vika. I definitely remember Viktoria Volchkova being called, Volchka. I always thought it was a blend of her first and last names.

I guess I should elaborate. There is an official short name like Vika to me. All other versions are diminutives And if random people will try to call me Vikusik, for example, on the 1st meeting - I won't understand it, or just more likely find it rude. And these versions are used by close people who know you, if they feel like changing your name a bit:hopelessness:

These are the common short names: Maria-Masha, Aleksandra-Sasha, Elena-Lena, Ekaterina-Katya, Elizaveta-Liza, Anna-Anya, Svetlana-Sveta and so on

Russians, do you guys remember Yevgeny Kafelnikov? He was another one of those dreamy Russian Tennis Players. He had a "Cleft Chin" which IMO, added to his good looks. He was another player who spoke very good English. I wonder who is training for the World team event? Is there news about Sotnikova trying to fully rotate jumps? Obviously Julia is not fully back yet and my never fully come back. And Liza? What's up with our one time world champ our new Kimmie Meissner worse - she never made the worlds the year later. Is Leonova continuing? Poor woman what is she to do?

Yes, Leonova was already asked this question in an interview a few days ago and discussed her plans on next season. No plans on quitting anytime soon.

Next year the main "blood bath" in FS will be among Russian junior ladies for the 3 spots in the team. Incumbents: Tsurskaya and Fedichkina. Challengers: Lozko - a prodigy who just scored 181 internationally, Konstantinova who recently beat Lozko, Gubanova and Nugumanova whom we waited for so long. Who else? I mean the real ones.

Zhenia is the short for Evgeni / Evgenia =)

The abundance of shortenings and pet names in Russian and the fact that their use implies different grades of acquaintance/intimacy is absolutely fascinating.
I became aware of this by reading Russian novels and it was a bit puzzling at the beginning, but it's a lovely habit.
