2016-17 Russian Qualifiers and other events

Thanks to 'The Finn' for uploading all the Russian Cup videos. It's been a great resource, all videos in sequence and all names in English, I really struggle with the Cyrillic alphabet.

I have been very impressed with the quality coming through in junior pairs, some very exciting teams in their ranks and nice to see some triple jumps appearing as well. It will be very interesting to see who makes the junior worlds team. They have potential 6/7 teams who would be worthy of competing at that level.

From stage 5 I was very impressed with Erokhov and Samoylov (never heard of him before), their appears to be a resurgence in the mens ranks, 4 guys through to the final and plenty of talent at home. Impressed with the way Fedichkina has fought back from her disappointing JGP performance, it looks like she is recovered from her injury, again it will be tough to make the Junior worlds team but I would really like to see her there.

On the dance front, I have enjoyed D/S, I still think she is a loss to pairs but she has done well so far in Dance. It will be interesting to see how they rank in Nationals.

Pavlyuchenko/Khodikyn have some really nice SBS jumps....3T+3T sequence and a 3S. She seems like a strong jumper. She's new to pairs and this is their first season together; hopefulyl they will continue to do well.

And they have been together only first season, so I think they could be pretty decent in the future.

I also liked the SP Lina Kudriavtseva skated with Simenenko. Considering that they have been together only for a month or two, I thought they looked better than Lina looked with Zakroev. This season they won't be at the junior nationals, maybe they will compete at the second junior nationals in April, but I think they look promising for the next season.

Russia suddely have so mnay promising junior pairs! Considering that so many junior pairs have split and paired with a new partner in the off season, I am quite surprised that some of them look so strong. Osipova/Galiamov is another pair that we should watch, also together only first esason, and Poluyanova/Selkin have been getting stronger during the season, even though the start of the season was a bit slow for them (together only first season).

I think it will be quite fight for the 12 spots at the JGP next season! If each of them will get two spots, it is only space for six pairs!

I've heard that Adelina Sotnikova won't skate at Russian Nationals. So spot is free now. But I hope that Polina's spot is safe and she will skate there. Her SP is masterpiece. I need to watch it again. So mesmerizing, so spectacular.

Any updates on the 5th stage of the Russian Cup? Junior ladies' LP and senior ladies?

There are couple of notable names there, like Vladislav Dikidzhi who recently landed his 1st 3A and Andrei Kutovoy who made it to the Junior Nationals. I also noticed that there is a skater named Alexander Povetkin. I have never heard of him but his name is famous.

Not many known names among ladies but I recall that Yasmina Kadyrova skated two Russian cup events with decent results. I also recall that Sofia Moroz was included in one of the Russian national teams.

How is it with pairs? How are they qualifying to the second Junior nationals in April? Are there any competitions, or do the federations just decide who they send per each region?

Nationals Younger Age (Zhuk Memorial) - only singles, no pairs or dance.

Nationals Elder Age (1-4 Apr, Velikiy Novgorod) - other competitions. Programs Junior, age limits - born at 2000-2004 for singles, for pairs and dance Men 1999 and younger, Ladies 2000 and younger.
Singles are qualified by regional competitions (21-24 Feb for Moscow, about the same time in other regions), pairs and dance - on results of Russian Cup Events and JrNats.
These competitions are less important than JrNats, something like "second chance" for them who did not qualify to JrNats or had not very good results at JrNats.

i realise that the second junior nationals may not be as important (in comparison with the first junior nationals) but I am curious whether we may be able to see there Kudriavtseva/Simenenko, or whether they will have to miss it because they didn't skate at any Russian cup. Is there any way they can qualify, or will the Russian federation just let them compete? But then they they could let anyone compete? Or will there be competitions where pairs who didn't do Russian cups can still qualify?

Russia has National level Events:
Senior - Nationals and Final of Russian Cup (Senior).
Junior - JrNationals, Final of Russian Cup (Junior), Nationals Elder Age.
Novice - Nationals Younger Age (also knowh as Zhuk Memorial).

Singles are qualified to Nationals Elder Age only by regional qualifying competitions. Dance and Pairs - by solution of Federation, which may include couples (not so many - one or two couples for discipline) which did not qualify if Federation treats them as promising.

For Final of Russian Cup (it is one competition, including Juniors and Seniors) - all participants are by solution of Federation. Federation often includes skaters-couples which are interesting to test their level, even if no formal reasons to include them. Final of Russian Cup is also important competition, less important than Nationals (for Senors and Juniors - Senior or Junior respectively), but for Juniors about the same level as Nationals Elder Age.

Kudriavtseva/Simenenko will compete at Moscow Cup (20-22 Jan 2017), we can see their level.

Thank you, Alex. I am really loking forward to seeing them. Not sure what it is, but there is something in her skating that I really like. Maybe the way she skates with powr, that it doesn't look like a little girl's skating... or maybe the way she goes for it...

I hope they will be allowed to skate at the second junior nationals and place well, to get on the nationals team.
