2016-17 Splits & Partner Changes

It's not about reputation. I am talking in general here: One can have a stellar performance by chance, or be at the peak form at the Russian Nationals, for example and the rest of the season could be bad... or one can have a pretty good overall during the entire season. Of course that the Fed will choose to support those who proved to be more stable and constant during the season.

That is reputation scoring. Scoring should be based on the day of. Not previous competitions. Factoring other performances/results into other competition scores is not transparent and doesn't treat each skater fairly.

I agree. If the fed wants to send a team based on recent past performance if they had one bad competition, I think that is just fine, but should be transparent.

Thanks tulosai, I think you've clarified my position much better than myself. If a fed wants to send someone due to past results, be upfront about it. But those Russian National scores did not produce accurate placements and reputation was never and shouldn't be written into the scores. This is similar to Ashley Wagner circa 2014; US Fed reserved the right to decide Olympic placements based on other criteria.

Anyways, I am very off-topic.

I feel like it was discussed somewhere before, but what about Lina Fedorova? Or she's out of question?

I feel like Pair skating in Japan is like endagered species...

It is, and nothing will change until they set up a programme that encourages Japanese boys (assuming they find any taller ones interested in taking up figure skating in the first place) to try pairs.

That Mishina and Mirzoev do not get along was clear to me in Chelyabinsk. I was sitting in the airport's waiting area next to them and they just ignored each other.

Nastya made an interview. She said that they will skate till the end of the season. Then she said a weird thing: "He wants a partner 8-9 kilos less than I. It won't be possible for me. My current weight is 46 ". Is he looking for a 37-38 kilos partner? What should her height be? 4'7 - 4'10 (140 - 147)? That's definitely not Yulia who is 158 and weights 48.

I think if Mirzoev cannot handle a 46 kg partner he should think seriously about the next steps. The case of Yulia Antipova is still fresh.

At 5'2" and 101 pounds, she is already incredibly thin--he is unlikely to find a partner much smaller than she is, I think.

Well, if they don't get along, it is better that they split now. Because there will be more pressure on them at Senior level, and this tension could all blow up.

Oh, I am finding it very hard holding back here.

Such a pig!

It's bad enough that he's thinking like that, but to let his partner know it?! Unbelievable!

And thank you for bringing Antipova into this conversation. Because there is the perfect example of what can happen when men thinking like this make perfectly healthy teenage girls think that they need to lose weight, when they don't.

By the way, is there any more news on how Yulia is getting on? We haven't heard anything about her for over a year.

I could find nothing. Apparently she gained healthy weight (mentioned 50 kg) and a year ago said that she wants to be back and aim at the Olympics. But realistically top pair skating is so demanding and taxing that after what she experienced it does not look feasible.

Of course, the coach and partner are to blame. But her own father was said to be overambitious as well.

Hence, as there is no news I think she has reverted to normal life so that I wish her all the best.

38 Kg is less than 85 lbs. My German Shepherd weighs 85lbs. That's insane. To make that a requirement for a partner? Wow. May I suggest he get his lazy bum into a gym rather than looking for a girl who willing to starve herself?

That made me laugh, imagining how he is lifting your dog!
Some skaters are naturally light. Kavaguti weighs under 40 kilos. But I don't think there is that many of girls with such low weight post puberty, so it could happen that he will waste his best pairs years searching for a partner like this instead of competing. He could find some 13 year old pre pubertal girl, but she won't be senior eligible when he stops being junior eligible, and in a few year's time, she will go through the puberty, very likely put on some weight and he will be again at the square one.

Here is the really weird thing: He is a small shepherd. He was chosen as puppy so he could do search and rescue and he had to be small enough to be carried for long distances in the snow if he got hurt or tired himself out looking for people (he broke his leg while training and can't do search and rescue now). So he is considered small enough that a male non athlete can carry him for miles. I think this guy sounds like a right piece of work.
Some people do have lighter bones than others and yes maybe 48KG is too much for him. But I'd say if he can't lift at least 43Kg he needs to get into the gym. Has anyone ever asked any of the top male pairs skaters about partner's weights? I'd love to get someone like Dylan M. or Eric R. opinion on what is too much to be safely carting around. Probably a touchy subject that most would shy away from answering.
I think my real problem is not with him preferring a partner who is lighter but with that being a requirement. Women's weight fluctuates especially during puberty and right after. A lot of women struggle keeping a low body weight in their teen years because your hormones are all out of whack.

Yes if it is true that he wants a partner 38 kilos or less (83.5 pounds) I think he has to just retire. There's no possible way he's going to find a partner at that weight who is also healthy. By way of example, Marissa Castelli is 48 kg and 4'11" feet, Kirsten Moore Towers is 4' 10" and 45 kg. These are two of the shortest ladies out there. Additionally he's not going to be age eligible for juniors soon (is he even still eligible next year???) So he's trying to find an adult at that weight. It's just not possible.

By way of further comparison my grandmother was the skinniest person I've ever seen in real life (and I danced competitively in my early 20's and late teens, I saw some incredibly skinny people every day). Multiple doctors told her she had to gain weight, she was unhealthy. She weighed about 90 pounds/41 kilos and was about 5' even. And this was without any muscle, she was a very old lady without muscle. Pairs women have to have a fair amount of muscle to be able to jump and assist with lifts. What he wants is just not possible.

I think your German Shepard looks adorable on your profile photo! Why is there no thread for photos of GS member's pets? :scratch3:

Not that this is an apples to apples comparison, but this is the Vaganova academy height and weight chart. Note that Vaganova is probably the strictest around (and also one of the most prestigious). . Not saying these weights are healthy but you get an idea of where the ideals come from.

Wow. That's just... 5 feet 81lbs is the ideal. That kind of makes my head want to explode. I know someone who is 5'7 and has weighed as low as 105. Her hair started to fall out.

According to the BMI at 5 feet you'd have to weight 95lbs before you'd be considered not underweight. I do understand that is for normal people and not athletes.

Being underweight, while certainly not as bad for you as being overweight (unless you are severely underweight), has some big health repercussions.

That's him. He's a big booger. He's nearly 10 now and has a couple of big health problems. Love him to pieces.

Yeah I can't even with that chart. It's not healthy I don't care what anyone says. Most of those girls must be starving.

Not impossible. E.g. Kavaguti... Moskvina said in a recent interview that Kavaguti weighs under 40 kilos. But obviously it will be extremely hard to find such a partner.
His last junior eligible season is 2017-18. Mishina's 2019-20. So he has one more junior eligible season, she has three more.
